Business Startups Don’t Mix with Womanly Urges…NOT!

Dec 23, 2011 | 2 Comments

Everyday I check the news for articles relating to women and the sciences or math.  I was intrigued by an article that came up in my search today called Women in Startups: Is There Room for Us and Our Mad Baby Fever?  The author, Elisa Gabbert, was describing the horrific messages issued forth to women and the abysmal assumptions made in another article that was posted at TechCrunch by guest author Penelope Trunk on December 11.  Ms. Trunk’s article was called Stop Telling Women to do Startups and the gist …

Narrowing the Confidence Interval of Gender Differences in Math and Science

Dec 21, 2011 | No Comment

The opinions expressed herein are those of the author, and not necessarily those of The New Agenda.
The conventional “wisdom” tells society that males are better at math and science than females. However, these myths are being debunked. As we at The New Agenda shared in September, the difference in male and female brain function, when it comes to performing mathematical or scientific tasks, is non-existent. Why is this stereotype perpetuated? Even though great strides have been made in gender equity and gender perception, our society has not been without its …

Montana Mann on set of "Dangerously Close"Even though I was originally born in Los Angeles, I spent the majority of my life in rural Virginia and it was not until high school that I decided to move in with my father back in Los Angeles.
Whenever I would visit my father throughout my childhood, I would also visit his sets. It was definitely the type of environment that gets your heart beating, but it was …

Why Can’t Women In Television Age Gracefully?

Sep 28, 2011 | 4 Comments

It was a joy to see the magnificent Margo Martindale receive an Emmy for her work as the villainous backwoods matriarch Mags Bennett on FX’s “Justified” this season. But as heartening as it was to see a 60 year old character actress being recognized for her portrayal of a complex, distinctly non-cookie cutter character — and one originally written for a man — she is something of an anomaly in a world where actresses …

So, the truth comes out about what it’s like to work as a woman in the White House. In Ron Suskind’s new upcoming book, Confidence Men, Women in Obama’s White House felt excluded and ignored:
A new book claims that the Obama White House is a boys’ club marred by rampant infighting that has hindered the administration’s economic policy and left top female advisers …

Hillary: Women’s Essential Roles in Economies Worldwide

Secretary Clinton (Sept. 16, APEC’s Women and the Economy Summit):
”To make it real, to achieve the economic expansion we all seek, we need to unlock a vital source of growth that can power our economies in the decades to come. And that vital source of growth is women.“

It is unfortunately rare that the media feature Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s speeches in her leadership role as the United States’ chief representative and negotiator with …

Adorable… And Good! Girls inspiring other Girls!

Jul 21, 2011 | 4 Comments

Yes, adorable can be good. The story behind this picture is about a random/fortuitous event. My sister Ale and I were at Lincoln center this July, around the fountain of the Metropolitan opera with my granddaughter Victoria. Three girls, probably 13-14 year olds who perhaps studied ballet somewhere nearby, came to the Met to take pictures of themselves within the side columns of the building (I guess dreaming of one day dancing in this building).
Victoria was running around the plaza like any toddler (and me chasing after her), and …
