Is Gender Specific Marketing of Toys Paving the Way for Gender Inclusivity?
The opinions expressed herein are those of the author, and not necessarily those of The New Agenda.
“ The companies that make these try to trick the girls into buying the pink stuff, instead of what the boys want to buy, right?…So, why do all the girls have to buy princesses? Some girls like superheroes. Some girls like princesses!…Why do all the girls have to buy pink stuff and all the boys have to buy different color stuff?” – Riley, a precocious, young girl, on the marketing of toys
Ah, the wisdom …

Narrowing the Confidence Interval of Gender Differences in Math and Science
The opinions expressed herein are those of the author, and not necessarily those of The New Agenda.
The conventional “wisdom” tells society that males are better at math and science than females. However, these myths are being debunked. As we at The New Agenda shared in September, the difference in male and female brain function, when it comes to performing mathematical or scientific tasks, is non-existent. Why is this stereotype perpetuated? Even though great strides have been made in gender equity and gender perception, our society has not been without its …

In Support Of Chancellor Katehi
Conflict with police has become a staple at Occupy Wall Street protests across the land. So why is one woman being singled out to take the blame, being asked to resign, and targeted for ouster?
For those not in the know, Linda Katehi is the Chancellor of UC Davis, where a viral video of police pepper-spraying sitting protesters was filmed on Friday, November 19th. Here’s the film, for those who haven’t seen it.
This incident started when alleged police brutality erupted on the UC Berkeley campus, where another viral video was filmed, …

Winston Churchill, Sarah Palin, and Ms. Potato Head 2012!
Reprinted with the express permission of the author, from Conservatives for Palin. The opinions expressed herein are those of the author, and not necessarily those of The New Agenda.
There is a quote that is sometimes misattributed to Winston Churchill: “If you’re not a liberal when you’re 25,you have no heart. If you’re not a conservative by the time you’re 35, you have no brain”.
As it turned out for me, when I was 25, my heart told me that I needed to start thinking. I grew up in a …

Montana Mann on set of "Dangerously Close"Even though I was originally born in Los Angeles, I spent the majority of my life in rural Virginia and it was not until high school that I decided to move in with my father back in Los Angeles.
Whenever I would visit my father throughout my childhood, I would also visit his sets. It was definitely the type of environment that gets your heart beating, but it was …

A Look at Healing

“I want to live where soul meets body and let the sun wrap its arms around me, and bathe my skin in water cool and cleansing, and feel what it’s like to be new.”—Death Cab for Cutie
Life after abuse is possible. Though it has been said that time heals all wounds, that has not been my experience. However accepting myself along with the vicissitudes that emerge from living life completely helps me to feel …

How the Media Train Boys to be Sexist
The following post is cross-posted by Erin McNeill’s blog Marketing, Media, and Childhood. The opinions expressed herein are those of the author, and not necessarily those of The New Agenda.
Watch this trailer from the Media Education Foundation, which highlights the powerful messages boys are getting from current popular media. Or, as they put it, “Takes aim at the forces in male culture that condition boys and men to dehumanize and disrespect women.”
The issue with negative media messages to our children, as I see it, is not so much how those …

Can’t We Have A Ceasefire in the Mommy Wars?
Republished from MORE magazine, September 10, 2011.
We go behind enemy lines for the real story.
It’s back-to-school time, which is exciting for the kids except for, oh yeah, all their anxiety over schedules, books, classes and clothing. Yet those pale in comparison to what moms face coming back this week—another year on the PTA battlefield.
I’m a PTA mom in transition. I spent 19 years working on Wall Street. Three years ago, I left to raise my kids and became more involved with the PTA. Wall Street was easier. Hands down.
Having been …

Girls Closing Gap and Shutting Down Myths That Say Boys Are Better in Math
The opinions expressed herein are those of the author, and not necessarily those of The New Agenda.
image from www1.cyfernet.com
According to Jane Hyde, a psychologist from the University of Wisconsin, “the stereotype that boys are better at math is alive and strong…Parents still believe it, and teachers still believe it” (Alice Park, Time Science). But based on the research she and other researchers from University of California, Berkeley, are conducting, this stereotype is just that: a stereotype and a myth, and girls are shutting it down with irrevocable force.
