Women and Breast Identity

Aug 2, 2011 | 13 Comments

Amazon preparing for a battle (Queen Antiop or Armed Venus), by Pierre-Eugène-Emile Hébert 1860 (National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C.)Similar to China’s bound feet, American society has chosen the female breast as the core of feminine beauty. The rounder, fuller, and more pert the breast, the greater the appreciation, the lovelier the woman. The female body has taken on the requirements of society’s ideals, and women run to surgeons to be sliced open and …

Adorable… And Good! Girls inspiring other Girls!

Jul 21, 2011 | 4 Comments

Yes, adorable can be good. The story behind this picture is about a random/fortuitous event. My sister Ale and I were at Lincoln center this July, around the fountain of the Metropolitan opera with my granddaughter Victoria. Three girls, probably 13-14 year olds who perhaps studied ballet somewhere nearby, came to the Met to take pictures of themselves within the side columns of the building (I guess dreaming of one day dancing in this building).
Victoria was running around the plaza like any toddler (and me chasing after her), and …

Wacky, Know-Nothing Women Need Not Apply!! Why Do We Still Resist Women In Leadership?

Jul 20, 2011 | 4 Comments

The opinions expressed herein are those of the author, and not necessarily those of The New Agenda.
Just after my election as president of the Homeowner’s Association in our town home complex in 2004, an older male neighbor stood nose to nose with me and said “you really need to get some men on the board because women don’t know how to do anything.”
Initially drafted to the position, I worried about receiving “who the hell does she think she is” snipes every time I made a decision or gave …

USA, USA – Go Women’s Soccer!

Jul 17, 2011 | 5 Comments

The New Agenda will be cheering on the USA Women’s Soccer Team as they head to the finals of the World Cup.
Just as the women’s team did in 1999, this team is exciting and engaging a generation of adolescent girls.
Kelleigh Welch reports:
The emotional victories over the past week put the U.S. team where it has been trying to get since its 1999 World Cup win, considered a breakthrough for women’s soccer – and all women’s sports. Since that win, the U.S. team has taken gold at the Olympics but fallen …

20 Essential TED Talks for Women

Women today have more options and freedoms than they’ve had at any point in history, but there’s still a long way to go for true equality in the workplace and everyday life.

Whether you’re a college student working to get ahead in a male dominated field or a woman already in the working world and meeting that glass ceiling head on, you know about …

Is ‘Feminism’ going Chapter 11?

Jun 30, 2011 | 9 Comments

Republished from The Huffington Post.
Last summer, I wrote an article here at HuffPost, Why the ‘Pro-Women’ Movement Should and Will Replace Feminism.   Sarah Palin had just declared herself a ‘conservative feminist,’ while endorsing a slew of diverse women candidates and working to get them elected.  I found her efforts to get more women into leadership, admirable.  The women who apparently own the term “feminist” vehemently disagreed with me.  Rather than welcome Palin with a sisterly embrace, they pursued her with machetes of words for daring to utter their sacred …

Feminist Art, a Depiction of Equality

Jun 29, 2011 | 4 Comments

The opinions expressed herein are those of the author, and not necessarily those of The New Agenda.
Cut Piece by Yoko Ono
Feminist Art, in contrast to the art most of us were taught about in school, is art that sees women and men as equal. Instead of being depicted by men as beautiful objects, in the feminist art movement women create depictions of themselves and each other as subjects, full members of the human race.  Instead of sweetly smiling at the camera or posing for a portrait, women in feminist art …

Preschoolers Versus Pinkalicious and the Mean Girls

Jun 17, 2011 | 22 Comments

The opinions expressed herein are those of the author, and not necessarily those of The New Agenda.
Recently my almost 4-year-old daughter picked out Pinkalicious at the library. In the book a little girl named Pinkalicious must stand up to a group of mean girls clad in black clothing. The follow up to Pinkalicious is called Purplicious (oh yes, this is a series) which details yet again…how Pinkalicous must stand up to a group of mean girls dressed in black clothing. Ugh.
A week later I receive an adorable looking book about a mouse named Chrysanthemum. Oh joy! …

Look at the Guy with the Big Pizza Pie; That’s TNA

Apr 12, 2011 | 5 Comments

Mike Groll / AP Photo
Remember Hiram Monserrate? He’s a TNA success story, and by success, I mean he’s not in office anymore.
Senator-elect Monserrate was arrested in 2008 after a dispute and physical altercation between him and his girlfriend, Karla Giraldo, was caught on a surveillance tape. He was later convicted of misdemeanor assault. Soon thereafter, The New Agenda launched a successful campaign with NOW NY and the Eleanor Roosevelt Legacy Committee to have him expelled from the New York Senate. This was no easy feat and took several months of …
