2012 Athena Award Winners: Julia Barry accepting The Laura Ziskin Lifetime Achievement Award on behalf of her late mother; Rachael Horovitz; Julie Taymor; Dee Rees; Nekisa Cooper; Theresa Rebeck and The Fempire: Diablo Cody, Dana Fox, Liz Meriwether, Lorene Scafaria.

A production of Barnard’s Athena Center for Leadership Studies and Women and Hollywood, the Festival boasts a diverse range of films that exemplify its mission—to illuminate the stories of courageous women who have made a difference across the globe.

The Athena Film Festival Awards honor extraordinary women for their leadership and creative accomplishments. This year, the Festival is creating The Laura Ziskin Lifetime Achievement Award, in memory of Hollywood producer and founder of Stand Up to Cancer who died in June 2011. Her daughter, Julia Barry, will accept the award on behalf of her mother. In future years, the Laura Ziskin Lifetime Achievement Award will be given to a trailblazer in the film industry who sets an exemplary standard for other women to emulate.

Additional awardees include Rachael Horovitz (Moneyball, Grey Gardens) for her exceptional talents as a motion picture producer; Julie Taymor (SPIDER-MAN: Turn Off the Dark, Across the Universe, Frida) for her vision and courage as an exemplary director; Dee Rees and Nekisa Cooper (Pariah) for their impact as an emerging writer/director and producer; The Fempire: Diablo Cody (Young Adult, Juno), Dana Fox (What Happens in Vegas, Couples Retreat), Liz Meriwether (No Strings Attached, New Girl), and Lorene Scafaria (Nick & Norah’s Infinite Playlist, Seeking a Friend at the End of the World) for their creativity and panache as screenwriters; and Theresa Rebeck (Seminar, Omnium Gatherum, Smash) for her leadership as a playwright and author of films, books and television. The Athena Film Festival Awards will be presented at the Opening Night Celebration on Thursday, February 9.

The lineup of features, documentaries and shorts that are set to screen at the Festival includes The Whistleblower starring Rachel Weisz, Wish Me Away, the coming out journey of country singer Chely Wright, Black Butterflies starring Carice Van Houten, who won the best actress award at the 2011 Tribeca Film Festival, and HBO’s Gloria: In Her Own Words, a documentary about Gloria Steinem. The Lady starring Michelle Yeoh as Burmese activist Aung San Suu Kyi will serve as the closing film of the Festival.

“This year’s lineup is a diverse lot from numerous countries in multiple languages: women firefighters and aviators; women who made peace, who made music and who used their ‘naked power’ to stand up to injustice,” says Kathryn Kolbert, co-founder of the Festival and the Constance Hess Williams Director of the Athena Center for Leadership Studies at Barnard College. “We have been inspired as we watched so many extraordinary films about courageous women,” says Melissa Silverstein, co-founder and artistic director of the Festival and head of Women and Hollywood, an online leader in the conversation about women’s roles in the film industry. “We hope the festival will encourage more filmmakers to tell these remarkable stories.”

The host was Madeleine Albright.

The program included
Aaron Copland’s “Fanfare for the common man”
Joan Tower’s “Fanfare for the uncommon women”
Saint-Saëns “Introduction and Rondo capriccioso”
Amy Beach’s “Grand Mass in e flat major”

Violinist Chee-Yun performed the solo part of Saint-Saëns “Introduction and Rondo capriccioso,” originally composed for Pablo de Sarrasate, the Spanish virtuoso from the 19th century and she played brilliantly.

The grand mass from Amy Beach, performed by the 130-member symphony choir and about 70 instrumentalists including a harp and four vocal soloists, was Amy Beach’s first major composition. Amy Beach had no formal training in composition and undertook this work at age 19 and finished it in three years. It is in late romantic style with lush harmonies. It established Beach as a major American composer and as they said “one of the boys.”

Julia Ward Howe, a suffragist, wrote that this mass made evident the capacity of a woman’s brain to plan and execute a work combining great seriousness with unquestionable beauty. Amy Beach’s grand mass is magnificent, and it would be desirable to have the work recorded from the outstanding performers of the National Symphony. The mass is in Latin, and according to the program notes there are some flaws in the accentuation of Latin. For most of us, this would be of less concern. The Gloria and the Agnus Dei were my favorite parts. The interplay between soloists, instrument groups and choir is very interesting: at the beginning of the Agnus dei the celli and the harp communicate, then a soprano solo, followed by a duet, and a quartet and then the majestic choir building up and returning to the entrance movements of the Kyrie.

A loud thank you to the National Symphony for a great performance and particularly for reviving this great mass. Amy Beach had many successes during her life time, had support of her Harvard professor husband for her compositions and was very well received in 1892. This period ended -as I read in the program notes – when Antonin Dvorak became director of the National Conservatory for Music in New York and declared that there was ample musical talent in America, but that all that talent was male.

For a whole century the mass was not performed.

Amy Beach was a very gifted child, learned piano from her mother and gave public recitals at age 7, improvised duets before age 2, knew 40 songs by age one. At 18 she had her piano debut with the Boston Symphony, and soon married the surgeon and Harvard professor HHA Beach. At his request her concert appearances were restricted, but he supported her composing. She composed over 300 works, with a Gaelic Symphony and a Piano Concerto as larger works. She is the only female composer whose name is engraved in the granit wall at Boston’s “The Shell” where she joins 86 other composers. For further reading and resources read here: <a href: “http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amy_Beach” Amy Beach's biography.

Valdes, notes that Senior Assistant Passaic County Prosecutor David Pine called the murders the “result of continued emotional torment in that household.” He is also quoted in news coverage that he “knew something would happen in that household.”

“These statements reflect a reckless disregard for the laws Mr. Pine is charged with administering. Clearly the public he serves cannot be confident in his abilities to serve in a role of prosecuting attorney,” said The New Agenda President Amy Siskind, who is also a family friend of Amy Friedlander and her two children. “We are calling on Governor Christie and Attorney General Dow to reassign or terminate Pine to send a clear message about offender accountability.”

Siskind is also asking Passaic County prosecutor Camelia Valdes for a meeting to discuss the issue. The N.J. Code of Ethics for County Prosecutors recognizes the inherent impropriety in comments like of this type being made by prosecutors. The Code specifically provides,”No county prosecutor or employee of a county prosecutor shall voluntarily testify as a character or reputation witness on behalf of any person accused of a criminal offense…” The ethics code “recognizes the importance of public confidence in the administration of criminal justice and provides for the general supervision of the county prosecutors by the Attorney General as chief law enforcement officer of the State. This Code has been endorsed by each county prosecutor on behalf of his or her office.”

To sign the petition, go here.

Siskind noted that the fact that a prosecuting attorney would make those statements just shows how prevalent victim blaming is. “New York has one of the strongest laws for court ordered treatment in the nation and New Jerseys has recently been improved, but we can’t take advantage of it with a continued focus on victim blaming,” said Siskind. “Until we address domestic violence and mental health issues as public health and safety issues and not private, family affairs – I fear we will only have more senseless tragedies like my friend Amy’s. To honor her memory and dedication to her children, The New Agenda will not let this go until those who blame victims are held accountable.”

To help raise awareness about domestic violence and harmful stereotypes about women involved in them, The New Agenda is promoting a valuable resource from New York Governor Cuomo’s office, here.

On Friday, September 23rd, Bill Maher said this during his HBO show:

Sarah Palin Would ‘F–k’ Rick Perry If He Was Black.

This statement is yet another example of Bill Maher’s misogyny. Maher has employed terms such as: ‘dumb twat’, ‘bimbos’, and ‘cunt’ in reference to women leaders including Sec Hillary Clinton, Rep Michele Bachmann and Gov Sarah Palin (read here).

On the same show, Rep Jane Harman (D-CA) called out Maher for his sexist remarks about Fox News’ Megyn Kelly.

Put simply: Bill Maher is out of control. His remarks are sexist and racist and he should be taken off the air!

Please sign the petition here.

Then, share the petition with your contacts via Facebook, Twitter and email. The petition will be presented to the Time Warner Board of Directors and HBO Management.

Here’s Maher in action:
