Return of the Bug-Eyed Bachmann
Cross-posted from BagNews with the express permission of its author, Karrin Anderson. The opinions expressed herein are those of the author, and not necessarily those of The New Agenda.
The blogosphere is abuzz with commentary about Newsweek’s bug-eyed Bachmann cover. Indeed, the shot could be used to illustrate the Urban Dictionary’s definition of “crazy eyes”: a state in which “the white part of the eye (the sclera) is clearly visible above and below the colored part of the eye (the iris).” That definition also notes that crazy eyes are “typically …

Feminist Cooties and the Primary-Go-Round
The opinions expressed herein are those of the author, and not necessarily those of The New Agenda.
Caveat: I am aware that this post is self-important and melodramatic. The personal is political, and politics have real personal consequences for people.
I’ve been MIA for the last little while because grad school is exhausting, and because I was in remission, briefly, from my debilitating political hypervigilance (a result of Primary PTSD from 2008). But oh boy, things are spinning up again and as such I get to start getting harassed on my two …

By Insulting Palin, The New York Times Gives Itself a Black Eye
The opinions expressed herein are those of the author, and not necessarily those of The New Agenda.
Bill Keller, executive editor of The New York Times, offered his version of a poison pen letter to Sarah Palin in his piece entitled Sarah Palin’s Tom and Jerry Problem. In it, he claimed that “If the 2012 election were held in the newsrooms of America and pitted Sarah Palin against Barack Obama, I doubt Palin would get 10 percent of the vote.” He is sure “most journalists would recoil in horror …

Sarah Palin and The Media’s Charm Offensive

Gilty pleasures: Larry Flynt, with bodyguard Frank Torres, in his gold wheelchair at the Four Seasons Hotel, San Francisco – UK's The Independent (click image)Last Friday, America’s vilest pornographer Larry Flynt unintentionally exposed the mainstream media’s current profit-model: “Sarah Palin is the dumbest thing. But I made a fortune off of her.” Besides serving as a reminder of Flynt’s stunning arrogance (does he believe that getting rich from selling sordid fantasies makes him an …

Satoshi Kanazawa asks: Are All Women Prostitues?
The opinions expressed herein are those of the author, and not necessarily those of The New Agenda.
Satoshi Kanazawa is a British-based Japanese evolutionary psychologist at the London School of Economics. In addition, he writes a blog for the American magazine “Psychology Today.” The title of a book he cowrote, Why Men Gamble and Women Buy Shoes: How Evolution Shaped the Way We Behave, unfortunately gives you an accurate idea of the sort of writing from him the readers of “Psychology Today” are subjected to. Naturally, science cannot simply be dismissed …

Bin Laden may be dead but, as many have noted, his ideology is still very much alive. Indeed, it landed on our shores long ago. It is now most definitely here.

Will Sad Dads Help Sad Moms – Or Not?
There’s been a firestorm of comments in response to the news about post-partum depression in dads – and most of the sparks are from women. One New York Times blog prompted a ‘you’ve-got-to- be-kidding-me’ chorus peppered with sharp words for men who don’t ‘suck it up’ and come to terms with the very unlovely aspects of having children. Men fired back with exasperated comments that women will “complain about anything.”
And so it goes. It’s a familiar fight about sleep deprivation, domestic responsibility and fairness. It’s about gender roles and expectations …

Stop Blaming the Victims! Irene Morales Speaks Out!
The opinions expressed herein and those of the author, and not necessarily those of The New Agenda.
Blaming the victim has got to stop. Within the past week, two stories have hit the news reminding us (in case we hadforgotten!) that crimes against women continue, and women are always the first to be blamed. First, we heard of the alleged gang rape of an 11 year old girl in Texas, and she was in essence, blamed for the rape not only by the NY Times article’s insinuation, but also by the …

Slate Serves Up Misogyny for International Women’s Day
The opinions expressed herein are those of the author, and not necessarily those of The New Agenda.
“What’s Not Hot?” This blatantly misogynistic headline is how Jack Shafer celebrates International Women’s Day with his review on the Tina Brown’s debut issue of the Newsweek redesign. “Newsweek suffers [an]… avoidance of newsiness and the week” he says while complaining about “the queen of cold, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton” on the cover, a list of “150 Women Who Shake the World” and the “women theme” throughout.
It’s not enough to stop the dismissiveness at …
