Preschoolers Versus Pinkalicious and the Mean Girls

Jun 17, 2011 | 22 Comments

The opinions expressed herein are those of the author, and not necessarily those of The New Agenda.
Recently my almost 4-year-old daughter picked out Pinkalicious at the library. In the book a little girl named Pinkalicious must stand up to a group of mean girls clad in black clothing. The follow up to Pinkalicious is called Purplicious (oh yes, this is a series) which details yet again…how Pinkalicous must stand up to a group of mean girls dressed in black clothing. Ugh.
A week later I receive an adorable looking book about a mouse named Chrysanthemum. Oh joy! …

Catfights and Reality TV

Society has always been unnerved by the advancement of women; each succeeding generation has manufactured its own scheme for stalling progress and reminding women of their place. In the 1980’s as women rushed off to graduate school and up the corporate ladder, we had the era of shoulder pads and big hair and make-up. The shoulder pads were a subliminal message to the men folk that we were on the same page; the broad …

How Media Entertainment Defines Gender and Values

May 12, 2011 | 2 Comments

According to the Kaiser Family Foundation, a study was conducted in 2010 to determine the amount of time children between the ages of 8-18 years of age spend using entertainment media, which includes TV, cells, internet, ipods, and video games. The results are astounding: the average child spends almost 11 hours a day, seven days a week, entrenched in them. (Here is a PDF version of the findings for further perusal). And they’re not the only ones …

Girl Power in ‘Sucker Punch’, ‘Hanna’, and ‘Winter’s Bone’

May 4, 2011 | 11 Comments

The opinions expressed herein are those of the author, and not necessarily those of The New Agenda.
In the past year, directors have been trying to feed our womanist pangs for more girl power in films. At least this is how I see the trend. Because as a woman and a mother, I want to see movies that represent my gender as empowered, important, and intelligent. I want to see them as real and as true and valued members of society. I want to have faith in humanity — in this …

Why Bridesmaids Is Important

May 3, 2011 | 6 Comments

Reprinted from The Huffington Post with the express permission of actress and writer Jamie Denbo. The opinions expressed herein are those of the author, and not necessarily those of The New Agenda.
The newest, big budget comedy to come from the cool comedy club stars funny ladies, Kristen Wiig, Annie Mumolo, Melissa McCarthy, Maya Rudolph, Ellie Kemper, Rose Byrne and Wendi McClendon-Covey, and is directed by the magnificent, Paul Feig (Freaks & Geeks).
And it’s F#$%@@ING HILARIOUS.
Bridesmaids is not a “chick flick”. It’s a “flick” that happens to have chicks in it. …

Finally! Three Young Sisters Call Attention to the Degradation of Women in Rap & Hip-Hop Music

I thought I would share with everyone a glimmer of hope for the future of our daughters.  Calling their group “Watoto From the Nile”, three young sisters, Nia, 10, Nya, 9, and Kamaria, 5, along with the help of their father, have decided to take a stand against the offensive lyrics of rap and hip-hop music by writing “Letter to Lil Wayne”. “Lil Wayne” is an incredibly popular and successful rapper who has impacted …

Oscar Nominations Overlook Foreign Film that Highlights Honor Killing

It’s awards season, and for many of us, that means watching the red carpet festivities and compiling our list of movies that we must see.  Each year, with every nomination, it is also a reminder of what actors and films have been overlooked, and those who are not even allowed a seat at the table.  This year is no exception.
One such film that was overlooked is Die Fremde or When We Leave.  This is …

Self-Defense for Women, Lisbeth Salander Style

Jan 30, 2011 | 6 Comments

The opinions expressed herein are those of the author, and not necessarily those of The New Agenda.
This past year, I have fallen in love with Lisbeth Salander, one of the most riveting, exciting, tough, and empowered literary heroines ever created. And what kills me is that a man conjured her up, giving her skills, smarts, and strength with which to defend herself against a misogynistic andviolent society that targets women and their supposed frailty. Lisbeth Salander might be less than five feet tall, but she fights back physically and intellectually, her instincts for …

Anorexia Claims Another Victim

Jan 29, 2011 | 7 Comments

The opinions expressed herein are those of the author, and not necessarily those of The New Agenda.
The mother of French model Isabelle Caro committed suicide; Marie Caro’s death was attributed to her depression over her daughter’s death from anorexia.  Isabelle Caro died in mid November from complications of anorexia, which she battled most of her life.  While Caro was very close to her mother, she felt that her mother’s phobia with growth and growing up was a factor in her battle with anorexia.  By not eating, Caro could remain a …
