Drawing created by Byron Eggenschwiler to accompany Peggy Klaus's essay in The New York Times. Click the above image to see the full-size original drawing.“YOU can’t be afraid to ask,” my Uncle Art used to say when recounting tales of his successful 40-odd-year career selling mattresses up and down the Eastern Seaboard.
My uncle was talking about making the sale, but corporate …

Reprinted with the express permission of AccreditedOnlineColleges.com and the author. The opinions expressed herein are those of the author, and not necessarily those of The New Agenda.
Women today have more options and freedoms than they’ve had at any point in history, but there’s still a long way to go for true equality in the workplace and everyday life.

Whether you’re a college student working to get ahead in a male dominated field or a woman already in the working world and meeting that glass ceiling head on, you know about …

Tokenism

Two weeks ago, me and a hundred or so optics colleagues of mine were invited to an unveiling of a new 3D cinema projector at a large company here in Upstate, NY.  It was the first time this company had this type of open house and was invested in this type of technology.  The invited guests  were industrial types, professors, and graduate students who all have a vested interest in optics and display technologies.  …

Would You Hire This Mother as a Science Professor?

May 30, 2011 | One Comment

The following article is cross-post with the express permission from the blog Female Science Professor. The opinions expressed herein are those of the author, and not necessarily those of The New Agenda.
Below is a slightly edited excerpt from a recent e-mail from a reader. Some details have been generalized to make the scenario a bit more.. general.
I’m a 30-something Physical Science PhD. I finished my PhD a few years ago, just before my middle child was born. Since then I have been primarily a stay-at-home mom, but I have remained …

Trials & tribulations of a self-employed woman

May 13, 2011 | 2 Comments

The opinions expressed herein are those of the author, and not necessarily those of The New Agenda.
Entrepreneurship is in my genes.  It started with my father leaving industry as a quality control manager for an electronics company to become a real estate broker and then a few years later my mother joined him.  They started their own real estate firm when I was in elementary school and by the time I was a freshman in college they owned a successful real estate franchise for a large national chain.
My father …

Why Aren’t More Women Becoming Physics Professors?

Apr 13, 2011 | 6 Comments

The opinions expressed herein are those of the author, and not necessarily those of The New Agenda.
I interface with physics faculty for three major universities on a regular basis and am also strongly connected to physics departments in prominent universities all over the world.  Back in February I saw an article about the increase in tenured female faculty at the University of Arizona and I was excited to see just how far their College of Optical Sciences had fared compared to the rest of the university.
Even though …

Invisible Women: Where Is Half The World’s Population?

“I hadn’t thought about it,” said award-winning science writer Jessa Gamble.
We sat side-by-side in the theater at Ted Global 2010 in Oxford, UK, chatting as we waited for the next in a lineup of stellar speakers (of which 29% were women), at one of the world’s premier conferences (TED basics here: TED 101 (Or TED For Dummies)).
Gamble told me she planned to organize a TEDx …

Celebrating Angelia: A Woman in Her Own Right

Mar 2, 2011 | 10 Comments

The opinions expressed herein are those of the author, and not necessarily those of The New Agenda.
My adoptive mother, Angelia, was independent and autonomous. She epitomized the kind of autonomy all women should have; the kind of self-authority and volition my biological mother had never experienced in her life as an abused daughter, an indentured servant, and a victim of multiple rapes. Her authority was given to the will of a man who pimped her out for cash.
Ironically, at the age of eight, I was given up for …

New Yorkers Against Wal-Mart from Pavement Pieces on Vimeo.
Hundreds lined the gates of City Hall in the bitter cold recently, holding signs and banners. They were on a mission – to keep Wal-Mart out of New York City.
Activists, city council members and concerned citizens gathered to protest, …
