The “XX” Factor in the GOP Vice Presidential Selection
The opinions expressed herein are those of the author, and not necessarily those of The New Agenda.
A recent op-ed in the Boston Herald postulates that because of Sarah Palin’s supposed failures as the vice presidential pick will prevent any woman from being considered for the Vice Presidential nomination. The writer, Kimberly Atkins, a woman herself, titled her op-ed, “Sarah Palin factor puts women in the back row.” She goes on to speculate:
But Romney won’t choose any of them [Sen. Ayotte, Former Secretary of State Condolezza Rice, or Govs. Brewer, Haley …

If This Is a “War on Women”, Why Do I Feel Like I’m the Grenade?
Much has been made of the “war on women” in the last couple months following Congressional talks about federal insurance mandates for birth control. Comments from national and local talk radio hosts, political pundits, and so called comedians disparaging women across the political spectrum have come under scrutiny providing further ammunition in this “war”. Such comments have led politicians on both sides of the aisle to seek donations off of these comments. Congresswoman Pelosi and Democratic strategists James Carville and Donna Brazille have sent out fundraising emails referencing this “war …

Since the 1974-1975 season, Pat Summitt has served as the head coach of the team, winning more than a thousand games and eight national championships along the way. HBO’s “Game Change” Creates A New Film Genre–Histrionic, Historical Fiction
Over the weekend, HBO debuted its film “Game Change”, which supposedly depicts Governor Sarah Palin’s run for Vice President. The film is based on a book by the same name that focused on the 2008 presidential primaries and general elections as a whole. As I wrote a few weeks ago, this book has been denounced as “sexism at its worst” in its portrayals of not only of Palin, but also of Hillary Clinton and Elizabeth Edwards. The section of the book devoted to covering Palin’s time on the campaign trail …

We’ve Come A Long Way, Baby, But Still So Far to Go!
The opinions expressed herein are those of the author, and not necessarily those of The New Agenda.
Today marks the first day of Women’s History Month. The National Women’s History Month Project notes that this year’s theme is Women’s Education and Women’s Empowerment. Women now outnumber men at universities, but such equality has been a hard fought battle as the Project’s website notes:
Pioneers of secondary education for young women faced arguments from physicians and other “experts” who claimed either that females were incapable of intellectual development equal to men, or that …

“Game Change” Proves to Be Yet Another HBO Failure
The opinions expressed herein are those of the author, and not necessarily those of The New Agenda.
On March 10th, cable network HBO is scheduled to air their movie, “Game Change”— a hit piece in cinematic form taking aim at Governor Sarah Palin’s run for Vice President in 2008. This film becomes yet another avenue by which the network disparages women—specifically Sarah Palin in this case. After all, it this is the network which still gives so called comedian Bill Maher the platform to denigrate women– from Hillary Clinton to Michele …

On January 22nd, Congresswoman Gabby Giffords announced that she would step aside from office in the midst of her courageous recovery from a cowardly assassination attempt. She announced her decision to resign by releasing this touching video:
Congresswoman Giffords officially resigned from her House seat on January 25th, and on Friday, February 10th, President Obama signed into law the last bill Giffords co-sponsored—a bill that increases penalties for using small aircraft to smuggle drugs into …

Is “A League of Their Own” Truly Achievable?
The opinions expressed herein are those of the author, and not necessarily those of The New Agenda.
Earlier this week, just a day after the US Women’s National Soccer team won their Olympic qualifying tournament, a devastating blow hit the women’s sports world. Women’s Professional Soccer (WPS) announced it was canceling its 2012 season due to a legal dispute with one of the teams’ owner, Dan Borislow. This decision came just a few weeks after the league has received approval from the U.S. Soccer Federation to play their season with only …

January 2012 marks the 11th annual National Mentoring Month. Among youth, mentoring programs such as Big Brothers, Big Sisters has led to lower drug use rates, better school attendance, and improved self-esteem. Having a mentor beyond one’s teens and during their education and professional development are important as well. The American Psychological Association notes that female graduate students need mentors, and research shows that female graduate students rank having a female mentor is highly important …
