My life as a mole

Jan 17, 2009 | 37 Comments

I’ve been outed. A couple of days ago Naomi Wolf was on CNN, talking about The New Agenda. It seems she’d had a look around the website and saw some posts criticizing Obama. I’ll say one thing for Naomi; she’s a smart one.
“I’m interested in knowing who funds [the] blog,” she said. “We know that the right-wing is very very skillful at funding voices of dissent that look like something else.”
Busted.
As the person who created The New Agenda website, it’s time for …

Hey, Ms. — this is what a feminist looks like

Jan 13, 2009 | 47 Comments

Sen. Clinton at her confirmation hearing, January 13, 2009Senator Clinton’s confirmation hearing this morning reminded us all of what brilliance, competence, and feminism look like.
I loved this bit: “The ancient Roman poet Terence, who was born a slave and rose to become one of the great voices of his time, declared that ‘in every endeavor, the seemly course for wise men is to try persuasion first.’ The same truth binds wise women as well.”
This was her statement on women’s rights:

“Our foreign policy must reflect our deep commitment to the …

“God hates divorce” (but he loves a broken jaw)

Jan 8, 2009 | 44 Comments

Editor’s note: Beginning this month, The New Agenda Blog will be featuring regular columns from a diverse group of terrific contributors. Violet Socks is a writer and feminist activist who blogs as the Reclusive Leftist. She is a co-founder of The New Agenda and the editor of its website.
Rick Warren explains it all for you. When Rick Warren was invited to preside at Obama’s Inauguration, I wrote that his selection was an insult to women everywhere. Warren is an antediluvian sexist who believes that women were put on …

Yet another insult to women: Obama chooses a sexist pastor for his Inaugural

Dec 18, 2008 | 52 Comments

An almost all-male Cabinet. A speechwriter who thinks sexual assault is funny. A senior advisor who’s on record with his belief that innate inferiority, not discrimination, is what’s keeping women back.
And now, with another twist of the knife, President-elect Obama has invited Rick Warren to deliver the invocation at the Inaugural.
Rick Warren.
Most of the outrage surrounding this choice focuses on Warren’s opposition to gay marriage and reproductive rights. But there’s something else about Warren, something the women of America might like to ponder as they …

The New Agenda issues Halftime Report press release on Obama transition

Dec 15, 2008 | 26 Comments

The New Agenda is busy!
Today we issued a Halftime Report on President-elect Obama’s transition and what it means to women (bottom line: they don’t seem to matter):

Despite the fact that the majority of American women voted for candidate Barack Obama in November, apparently this constituency does not matter to the President-elect. Analysis of the first 40 days of the Obama transition period reveals shocking steps backward for the women of this country.
To date, Obama has appointed only four women out of 16 announced cabinet positions. …

Obama’s message to women

Dec 11, 2008 | 43 Comments

We’re about halfway through the transition period between election and inauguration, and it seems a good moment to take stock of the message President-elect Obama is sending to the women of America. So far, it’s not an encouraging one.
First, there was the Larry Summers appointment. Whatever Summers’ gifts in terms of economic policy — and those are debatable — he’s an intellectual trainwreck when it comes to gender. His absurd and groundless views on women’s inherent inferiority make him an appalling choice for a senior post in …

It’s the system, stupid

Dec 9, 2008 | 61 Comments

James Carville is upset with The New Agenda.
“This New Agenda crowd need to get a new agenda, a new agenda of women that are losing their jobs, a new agenda of battered women and women that are victims of sex discrimination and not this kind of silliness,” he says.
This kind of silliness, of course, refers to Jon Favreau’s groping of a cardboard Hillary Clinton while his buddy forces a beer to her lips. Gee, what could that possibly have to do with discrimination against …

Larry Summers may be off the short list for Treasury!

Nov 13, 2008 | 24 Comments

“Intense backlash from women’s groups may have pushed former Clinton Treasury Secretary Larry Summers off the short-list to lead Treasury for President-elect Barack Obama,” the Politico is reporting tonight.
The New Agenda is front and center in the story:
The New Agenda, a non-partisan women rights’ group founded by former supporters of Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-N.Y.), criticized the potential for a Summers’ appointment in a press Nov. 6 press release that declared his “record of derogatory comments aimed at women ensures that his selection would be divisive and thus distract from …

Siskind to MSNBC: Thanks, but no, thanks!

Sep 25, 2008 | 8 Comments

From the email alert sent to The New Agenda members on Monday:

MSNBC has asked The New Agenda co-founder Amy Siskind to appear on David Gregory’s “Race for the White House” program for a discussion of NOW’s endorsement of an all male ticket.
Amy said no. Not without the requested meeting with NBC’s Zucker and the public apology from Matthews for on-air sexism. Amy also let Gregory’s representative know that, “until such time as Mr. Zucker and Mr. Matthews follow through on our requests, we would certainly be hypocritical to …
