Mammography in the News

Nov 17, 2009 | 5 Comments

The new mammogram guidelines set forth by the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force  this week that say women don’t need regular mammograms until they are in their 50′s rather than 40’s, and even then not as often.  This offers critics of the current healthcare legislation proposals a real opportunity.  In fact, Sarah Palin could reasonably claim that they confirm her suspicions of government “death panels” making healthcare decisions.  This is not the first time these changes have been proposed.  At a time when concerns that the currently debated health care …

More Palin “Hate Affair” Hysteria

Nov 17, 2009 | 8 Comments

The Hate Affair continues.  One of the most recent and most disgusting shots fired at Sarah Palin, in what appears to have escalated to an all out war, is this picture from “comedian” Lee Camp found at the Huffington Post.

In the wake of the release of her new book Going Rogue: An American Life, new attempts to degrade and humiliate Sarah Palin abound.  I think I have a grand sense of humor, but I don’t find this even remotely funny.  These attempts to sexualize Palin are a blatant ploy to have …

Congratulations Lauren Bacall!

Nov 15, 2009 | No Comment

The ever glamorous Hollywood legend Lauren Bacall was awarded an honorary Oscar this weekend during the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ 2009 Governors Awards.  In keeping with her reputation as in independent outspoken woman, Bacall shooed away an escort who tried to help her to the podium during Saturday’s gala.  During her acceptance the actress held up her Oscar statue and said, “The thought when I get home that I’m going to have a two-legged man in my room is so exciting.”
At a time in Hollywood when women were …

Who Is Martha Coakley?

Nov 14, 2009 | 8 Comments

The opinions expressed herein are those of the author, and not necessarily those of The New Agenda.
I keep hearing a lot of buzz about Martha Coakley, who is hoping to become the first female Senator of the state of Massachusetts.  Nancy Pelosi recently made news by endorsing her opponent (a man) in that race.  I was left wondering who is this Martha Coakley I’m hearing so much about?  I’m always thrilled to hear about a woman running for office, especially one who has a chance to be an historic first …

Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison Will Not Quit Senate

Nov 14, 2009 | 3 Comments

The opinions expressed herein are those of the author, and not necessarily those of The New Agenda.

Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison has announced that she will not leave her Senate seat until after the Texas Republican primary.  According to the Dallas Morning News,
The announcement came as a new poll said 60 percent of likely Republican primary voters wanted Hutchison to remain in the Senate while running for governor. The poll was the second in two weeks showing Perry with a double-digit lead.
At private meetings in recent weeks, Hutchison has asked her …

Round #8,624 of MSNBC’s War on Sarah Palin – Ding! Ding! Ding!

Nov 13, 2009 | 21 Comments

The opinions expressed herein are those of the author, and not necessarily those of The New Agenda.
Here we go again… I don’t even know what to say about the video from MSNBC’s Morning Meeting with host Dylan Ratigan.  Will the war on Sarah Palin ever end?  I’m starting to wonder if they are just trying to wear us all down so we will just stop fighting sexism entirely?  Ok!  We get it, you hate Sarah Palin!  But the war on Palin isn’t really the only point is it?  It’s the …

Honoring Our Veterans

On Veteran’s Day, I wanted to take a moment to thank all of our Veterans and their families for their sacrifices, service to our country, and extraordinary dedication to duty.

Women have and continue to make incalculable contributions to all branches of the military.  The two women highlighted below are just a small sample of the brave, dedicated, inspirational women veterans who have served our country.  To learn more about our women veterans, please visit Women at War, a special series honoring our women veterans as part of the Library of Congress project, …

Is Michelle Obama’s Slip in the Polls Unavoidable?

Nov 11, 2009 | 16 Comments

As reported by Politico.com, Michelle Obama’s popularity has slipped from an all time high in March of 72% to 61% this month.

“That 11-point stumble – some might call it a tumble – seems at odds with the focus of a White House publicity team that is carefully crafting her image and building a decidedly current, wholesome, upbeat brand. But while Obama has broadened the reach of her office, White House observers say that the role and projects she has embraced so far are seen by some as disappointingly traditional.”
Is anyone …

Women Helping Women: Michelle Obama Mentors Girls

Nov 3, 2009 | 28 Comments

Previously, The New Agenda honored former First Lady Laura Bush in our Women Helping Women series.
Although I’m sure we all agree that a woman President could make an enormous contribution to the future of women and girls, until that day, we can be excited about and encourage the efforts of our First Ladies.  First Ladies have a tradition of taking on important projects, from Eleanor Roosevelt’s work as Chair of the President’s Commission on the Status of Women, to Laura Bush’s work with The Ambassadors’ Girls’ Scholarship Program. While these …
