Bowling Down Barriers: Woman’s Pro-Bowling Victory is One for the Books
When Kelly Kulick sends pins crashing, she’s also smashing a glass ceiling. Kulick, 32 and from Union, N.J., bowled down an epic barrier last weekend, winning the 45th Tournament of Champions, one of professional bowling’s most prestigious events. She’s the first woman ever to win a top-level men’s bowling tournament.
Kelly Kulick is the first woman to win a top level men’s bowling tournament. She did it in style, with four straight strikes to open the match and a final …

Go Abby Go!
Talk about a trailblazer! Or a waveblazer? Abby Sunderland is an inspiration to girls both young and old.
MARINA DEL REY, Calif. — A 16-year-old has set out to become the youngest person to sail around the world alone.
Abby Sunderland of Thousand Oaks sailed into the sunny Pacific Ocean on Saturday after being delayed a few days by a series of violent storms in California.
Her boat-builder father, Laurence, along with other family members and fiends, cheered at the Del Rey Yacht Club as they watched the 40-foot craft called Wild Eyes …

Thank You Mr. O’Reilly
Thank you Mr. O’Reilly!
Finally someone addresses this! I’m shocked how few people have. For me, Senator Scott Brown posing in Cosmo was just not a big deal EXCEPT for the fact that it would have been treated very differently had it been a woman. A woman politician would have been raked over the coals for even appearing in a swimsuit competition (hmmm like Sarah Palin…) but Senator Brown gets a pass. I’m not even taking a side on whether he SHOULD get a pass, I’m just saying let’s be FAIR. …

Arlen Specter – Then and Now
For many women, Arlen Specter’s recent attack on Rep. Michele Bachmann brought back painful memories of his participation in the Anita Hill and Clarence Thomas controversy. For those of you who are too young to remember the Senatorial circus that arose around the confirmation of Supreme Court justice Clarence Thomas…
When the nomination moved to the floor of the Senate, it took a sudden and dramatic turn when Anita Hill, a law professor at the University of Oklahoma, came forward with accusations that Clarence Thomas had sexually harassed her. Hill had worked …

Looking Forward
One way or another, the special election in Massachusetts is about to be resolved. I have to admit, previous to this election, I knew very little about Massachusetts politics and politicians. I saw this clip on the news the other day and was shocked to learn how poorly women politicians have fared in that state.
Although the Massachusetts election is about a myriad of issues other than electing the first woman Senator and has unfortunately gotten nasty, maybe something good can come from it. We are moving into a year that will feature …

Remembering Rosa Parks
In examining almost any important historical event or movement, one can find a brave often under credited woman at the heart of it. So in this spirit, on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day, we honor and remember Rosa Parks as one of the most important sparks that led to the birth of the civil rights movement.
Our country has seen as many different types of protest as it has seen reasons for protest. However Rosa Parks has always been particularly inspiring to me because of her brave, dignified, determined style. I still remember …

Congratulations Sarah Thomas!
In case you missed it over the holidays, Sarah Thomas made history by becoming the first woman ever to officiate a college football bowl game at the Little Caesars Bowl matchup between Ohio and Marshall. Thomas became the first woman to be an official for a major college football game in 2007, and now has added a bowl game to her resume. She is one of only five women currently officiating in major college football, and is on the NFL’s officiating prospects list.
From ESPN on Sarah Thomas,
“I noticed her before the …

Rock The Vote – Using Sex for Political Messaging
For me, this video reaches new heights in the creepy use of women’s sexuality.
Huh? Could this be any creepier? Does this remind anyone else of the recent creepy Reebok ad? I know I keep using creepy as a descriptor, but until the hair on the back of my neck goes down, that’s the best I can do. CREEPY!
This video is degrading to both women and men. The implication is that women are too stupid, lazy, or uninformed to argue issues and explain their position - better they just show their cleavage and threaten to withhold sex. …

Sexism Stoplight: The Sexy Saleswoman
Dear TNA,
I work in an office that is frequently visited by salespeople who don’t work for my company but represent the various construction industry related product lines we sell to our customers. It is an almost all male environment and there is only one saleswoman who regularly visits. I dread the days “Diane” might show up because she is very attractive and I know I will have to listen to various guys commenting on her looks, clothes, body etc after she leaves. These comments range from just annoying to making …
