Exploiting Wisconsin’s Children
The opinions expressed herein are those of the author, and not necessarily those of The New Agenda.
A quick note to Wisconsin State Senator Glenn Grothman, who wants to pass legislation conflating single motherhood with child abuse: Stay away from the kids!
No, really. It’s not just that you’re wrong about this, and that further stigmatizing divorce and single-parenthood may actually make it harder for families to split from abusers. It’s that you’re willfully ignoring evidence about what HURTS CHILDREN in order to score political points. I don’t care who does that, or what party they belong to, as an …

Vice President Clinton: The Political Half Loaf
The opinions expressed herein are those of the author, and not necessarily those of The New Agenda.
“Compromise used to mean that half a loaf was better than no loaf. Among modern statesmen it really seems to mean that half a loaf is better than a whole loaf.”
-GK Chesterton
This is intended to be not just a riposte, but a screed. I have read one too many of those damn Hillary Clinton for VP opinion articles and I think my uterus may have finally come unmoored. I supported Hillary in 2008. I …

Naomi Wolf In Sheep’s Clothing
The opinions expressed herein are those of the author, and not necessarily those of The New Agenda.
What’s this? Naomi Wolf, author of seminal feminist text The Beauty Myth, and more recently, boys’ club honorary member, seems to be exploring new ideas! We’ve long known that Naomi was a woman of strong passions, and so we heartily welcome her to our side.
She hasn’t always played on our team: after joyously championing the candidacy of Senator Barack Obama over his competitor Senator Hillary Clinton, proclaiming him “Christmas, and New Year’s, and …

Feminist Cooties and the Primary-Go-Round
The opinions expressed herein are those of the author, and not necessarily those of The New Agenda.
Caveat: I am aware that this post is self-important and melodramatic. The personal is political, and politics have real personal consequences for people.
I’ve been MIA for the last little while because grad school is exhausting, and because I was in remission, briefly, from my debilitating political hypervigilance (a result of Primary PTSD from 2008). But oh boy, things are spinning up again and as such I get to start getting harassed on my two …

Carrie Lukas’s Simple Arithmetic of Pay Inequality
A few days ago, Carrie Lukas of the Independent Women’s Forum wrote an article entitled “There is No Male-Female Wage Gap” which was filled with more holes than a donut convention. I don’t have time to catalogue them all, so consider this a drive by.
First of all, after ridiculing the very idea that the patriarchy might have even the tiniest influence on the economic circumstances of women, Lukas asserts that “women gravitate toward jobs with fewer risks, more comfortable conditions, regular hours, more personal fulfillment and greater flexibility.” Except, you …

No Fat Chicks
The opinions expressed herein are those of the author, and not necessarily those of The New Agenda. This article has been cross-posted from The Confluence.
This week, one of my professors brought up Sarah Palin in class. I always HATE when professors talk about politics, because the power differential in the classroom leaves you without much recourse to respond. So when my professor started criticizing Sarah Palin for bringing cookies into a school in the midst of an unprecedented Childhood Obesity Epidemic, I pretty much just bit …

Milbank to Obama: Crib from Hillary
The opinions expressed herein are those of the author, and not necessarily those of The New Agenda.
Some of our readers might remember the reprehensible sexism of the repulsive Dana Milbank from back when he suggested that Hillary Clinton should drink “Mad Bitch” beer:
[kml_flashembed movie="http://www.youtube.com/v/YArTpukehYY" width="425" height="344" allowfullscreen="true" fvars="fs=1" /]
Or from when he defended Alan Simpson after he likened Social Security to a cow with 310 million tits. Or perhaps from his numerous previous hit pieces against Hillary Clinton, both as a zombie candidate who just won’t die, and as the …

Office Casual
The opinions expressed herein are those of the author, and not necessarily those of The New Agenda.
Last week I started a new job. It’s an office job, in a professional setting. The staff is almost entirely female (with a male boss). The field is mental health, where one has to be very careful about obeying laws, record-keeping, and of course, keeping appropriate boundaries with clients. As such, the environment has a lot of very specific rules, and a fairly specific dress code.
We have to be careful to wear plain shoes …

Emily’s LOST
The opinions expressed herein are those of the author, and not necessarily those of The New Agenda. The New Agenda is neutral on abortion issues.
I know, I know. Emily’s List is a pro-choice, pro-Democrat organization. It’s right there in their mission statement. Being a pro-choice leftie myself, I’m okay with that. Really.
But here’s something to think about. The Senate has 100 members, a mere 17 of whom are women. There are currently 76 women serving in the House, three of whom are non-voting delegates (out of 435 voting …

Why the Pro-Women Movement Needs Men As Allies
The opinions expressed herein are those of the author, and not necessarily those of The New Agenda.
I care about justice. I care about equality. I hold these values very dear. But they’re not the whole reason that I fight against sexism. I’m a woman. Sexism hurts me on a day-to-day basis. So why the hell shouldn’t I fight against it with everything I have and am? Simple self-interest is not the only reason I fight, but it is where I started from. I didn’t start seeing the deep injustice of …
