Million Women March Planned in Egypt!!!
The opinions expressed herein are those of the author, and not necessarily those of The New Agenda.
Egyptian women fought alongside men in the Tahrir Square revolution feeling the power of equality which was critical to the success of the movement. Yet, as the country rebuilds itself, the New York Times reports there have been some disappointments for women seeking equality and true democracy.
The committee of eight legal experts appointed by the military authorities to revise the Constitution did not include a single woman or, according to Amal abd al-Hadi, a longtime feminist here, anyone with a …

Potty Parity is on the Way
We've come a long way baby!
The opinions expressed herein are those of the author, and not necessarily those of The New Agenda.
The Wall Street Journal reports Potty Parity is on the way, courtesy of John Boehner. A women’s bathroom is a symbolic step in the right direction and the incoming Speaker should definitely get props.
Of course potty parity may not seem like a big important issue, but knowing that 2011 will be the first year women had a bathroom in the House sure gives you an idea of what a …

Will the Republican Old Boys Network Do the Smart Thing?
On Fox News Sunday, host Chris Wallace calls out Republican leadership and defines the Old Boys Club. To see for yourself, watch this (skip to 12:30):

Chris Wallace asked Rep. Eric Cantor whether the GOP will act as an “old boys’ network” and freeze out newer Tea Party members like Michele Bachmann. Cantor said no, not at all—he’s simply endorsing Jeb Hensarling for conference chair over Bachmann because “we’ve had a history of working together.” “Yeah, but that’s the old boys’ network!” Wallace interjected.

What’s Going On in the Races
The opinions expressed herein are those of the author, and not necessarily those of The New Agenda.
Last week, I posted a summary of all the senate and governor races with women candidates. Here are a few recent polls and reports of some on these races.
Connecticut US Senate:
Linda McMahon Gaining Ground!
According to the latest poll (9/9), only a 5 point difference between McMahon and her opponent. This race is still polling “Leans Man” but there are such things as surprises!
Delaware US Senate:
A 9/27 poll shows a write-in campaign for Castle could …

Is 2010 the Year of the Safe Man?
Now the primaries are finished and the general is on! How will women fare in representation after this election? Early in the election season, some were calling 2010 “The Year of the Woman”, yet so many women lost their primaries. Below is a list of women general election candidates along with some polling information. When reading poll reports, you see words like “Solid Republican”, “Safe Democratic”, “Likely Democratic”, “Leans Republican”. I’ve translated these terms into what matters to readers of this blog: Show us the women!

Sarah Palin’s Actions Speak for Me
As a nonpartisan gender parity enthusiast who believes our country is sorely in need of capitalizing on the talents and contributions of the other half of its population, I have been very encouraged and excited by Sarah Palin’s Mama Grizzly effort to get more Republican women elected. I’ve been wishing that Democrats had someone like her who was willing to use their power and influence to elect more women in their party. I’ve been hoping that someone or some group would emerge soon, even in time for the midterm elections, …

Women Governors 2010 Update
For those who have been watching the women governors’ races, we lost two devastatingly close races Tuesday night. Republican Karen Handel of Georgia and Democrat Margaret Anderson Kelliher of Minnesota, both their party’s moderates and both with the best chance to win in the general election, lost their races by razor, razor thin margins. Handel’s loss was less than 4/10 of a percent, fewer than 2500 votes. Kelliher’s loss was less than 1500 votes. Both women conceded Wednesday at around noon. Now Georgia and Minnesota will have to wait at …

2010 The Year of the Woman for Governors?
There’s been so much press recently about women in politics. “2010 is the year of the woman“. Is this really true?
OK Governor General Election Opponents
I think governors races are a good indicator because it tells us what is happening in all 50 states. Which ones trust a woman to head their state? I have a particular interest in the governors races because many Presidents and Vice Presidents come from Governors’ mansions. I’m wanting a woman in the White House, and I’m sure as heck not wanting to wait 25 …

A Teachable Moment for the Republican Party
It is no secret that the Republican Party is committed to recruiting women candidates. They even have a website dedicated to women which is linked all over the official GOP website. According to a National Journal article earlier this year, the GOP acknowledges they are “woefully underrepresented” among women. RNC co-chair, Jan Larimer, heads up the party’s efforts to address this problem. Here’s what Ms. Larimer had to say:
“We’re working with the women in Congress … to empower the women in their states to get involved and to participate,” Larimer …

Can the Women’s Movement Learn a Lesson from the Tea Party?
The New York Times reports Tea Party Avoids Divisive Social Issues. The article is all about how leaders want to keep their members focused on core issues of the debt and smaller government. They recognize that focus on social issues such as abortion and gay marriage is divisive and counterproductive to their cause.
But as the Tea Party infuses conservatism with new energy, its leaders deliberately avoid discussion of issues like gay marriage or abortion.

Tea Party leaders argue that the country can ill afford the discussion about social issues when it …
