On Women and Ideas
The opinions expressed herein are those of the author, and not necessarily those of The New Agenda.
The OpEd Project website counts weekly bylines in major papers to record what percent of writers are men and what percent are women.
This week’s numbers were about on par. Female-founded Huffington Post featured 21% women to 79% men. Washington Post published 17% female writers, compared to 83% men, equal to the gender disparity in The Wall Street Journal. The highest ratio of women’s articles run was in the Daily Beast, where female writers …

Shocker: Weight Affects Women’s Paychecks More Than Men’s
The opinions expressed herein are those of the author, and not necessarily those of The New Agenda.
New studies suggest that very thin women earn proportionately more money than do average-sized women. Comprising only women within 25lbs of doctor-recommended weight, the latter study strictly compares the rail-thin to her average-sized female colleagues.
The Wall Street Journal reports this week that employers “seem to treat women…the way the fashion industry does”; thin women get much higher paychecks than do average-weight women, while thin men tend to earn less than their average-weight colleagues:
The study …

After 28 Years, The Pros and Cons of Title IX
The opinions expressed herein are those of the author, and not necessarily those of The New Agenda.
Richard Nixon signed Title IX into law on June 23, 1972. Title IX most famously applies to women’s sports, but in fact the law is much broader than that:
Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 prohibits discrimination based on sex in education programs and activities that receive federal financial assistance.
The U.S. Department of Education gives grants of financial assistance to schools and colleges. The Title IX regulation describes the conduct that violates Title …

Happy Anniversary to the Iron Lady!
The opinions expressed herein are those of the author, and not necessarily those of The New Agenda.
This week marked the 31st anniversary of Britain’s appointment of its first female prime minister.
Margaret Thatcher, oft-heralded for promoting vast privatization, busting nation-breaking trade unions, and assisting the Soviet Union’s beneficial post-Cold War reform, went on to serve an unprecedented three terms.
Happy anniversary Maggie!
“Kittenish and Kind”
Of course, she had favourites – Cecil Parkinson, John Moore, John Major – and she could use her femininity to get her own way. She could be kittenish, especially with leaders. …

Global Governance Requires Rule of Law, Even for Women
The opinions expressed herein are those of the author, and not necessarily those of The New Agenda.
This week the United Nations approved the Islamic Republic of Iran’s bid to join its Commission on the Status of Women. To quote a particularly prescient observation: “When a country that stones women to death for adultery is chosen to serve in a leadership role on the U.N.’s Commission on the Status of Women, we know most of what we need to know about the U.N.”
Yes. That Iran. The very same …

Girl Scouts: A Study of Entrepreneurship
The opinions expressed herein are those of the author, and not necessarily those of The New Agenda.
Girl Scout cookies, arguably the most delicious American delight, represent an equally delightful history of feminism.
Just a few years after the Girl Scouts tradition launched, troops began selling cookies to finance their endeavor. In 1922 the official Scouts magazine, The American Girl, published a recipe. Girls baked their own wares, and sales followed the girls who baked the best cookies.
During the butter and sugar rationing that came with World War II, …

In Marketing, All the Single Ladies are Notably Absent
The opinions expressed herein are those of the author, and not necessarily those of The New Agenda.
Women were notably absent from the list of technology experts asked to review Apple’s new iPad. At first glance this might seem like a slight to women’s tech expertise. In fact, all the single ladies are the largest marketing demographic for growth in the United States, and the most actively-ignored demographic across the board.
As recently as 2009, marketing execs overlooked unmarried women entirely, favoring immigrants or the recently come-of-age Generation Y. But …

Virginia Thomas: Make Liberty Happen!
The opinions expressed herein are those of the author, and not necessarily those of The New Agenda.
Check out Justice Thomas’s wife standing up for what she believes:
In January, Virginia Thomas created Liberty Central Inc., a nonprofit lobbying group whose website will organize activism around a set of conservative “core principles,” she said.
The group plans to issue score cards for Congress members and be involved in the November election, although Thomas would not specify how. She said it would accept donations from various sources — including corporations — as allowed under …

On Her Terms
The opinions expressed herein are those of the author, and not necessarily those of The New Agenda.
This week fans – and alumi – of higher ed are fixated on gendered education. A Monday New York Times article describes the academic and social implications of a gender shift on college campuses, painting college women as hapless creatures subject to social subjugation by their outnumbered male peers. Candid quotes from UNC students make college women seem like victims of circumstance, helpless to resist the whims of the boys they want to date.
While it’s …
