Apr 7, 2011 | 4 Comments

The opinions expressed herein are those of the author, and not necessarily those of The New Agenda.
Check out these wordclouds filled with marketing words used for toys. Can you tell which words are supposed to appeal to girls and which to boys?

Women in Charge: Few but Visible

Feb 7, 2011 | 5 Comments

The opinions expressed herein are those of the author, and not necessarily those of The New Agenda.
Fortune 500 female CEO’s may be few in number. For those who have decided to take charge, women are cleaning up on Wall Street.
At first glance the numbers seem discouraging. Women lead only twelve of the top 500 companies?
Look closer. Of the thirty firms that brought in the best stock market returns last year, two are led by women:
One is Dupont (DD), whose CEO, Ellen Kullman, was profiled by my colleague Carol Loomis in last year’s Fortune …

Evolving Masculinity: A Telling History

Feb 3, 2011 | 3 Comments

The opinions expressed herein and those of the author, and not necessarily those of The New Agenda.
In a Mad Men inspired move, Newsweek is running a series of ads that reflect the evolving notion of masculinity in sales:
Sure, we haven’t invented a time machine yet. But at least we have ads. As Don Draper, the macho marketing maven at the center of AMC’s Mad Men, once put it,”advertising is based on one thing—happiness.” Ads don’t so much create desire as reflect it, showing us who we are and what we want—even when …

Women are a strong force behind push for rule of law in Egypt

Jan 28, 2011 | 12 Comments

The opinions expressed herein and those of the author, and not necessarily those of The New Agenda.
According to Slate’s XX, women are acting as a strong backbone in the ongoing overthrow of President Mubarak’s broken regime:
An unprecedented number of Egyptian women participated in Tuesday’s anti-government protests. Ghada Shahbandar, an activist with the Egyptian Organization for Human Rights, estimated the crowd downtown to be 20 percent female. Other estimates were as high as 50 percent. In past protests, the female presence would rarely rise to 10 percent. Protests have a reputation …

Witch Hunt: another point of view on Feminism

Jan 23, 2011 | 5 Comments

This post reflects only my opinions, not the opinions of The New Agenda.
We all know the old images of the Witch Hunt.
“She tempted me in my dreams!” Followed by a trial. The burden of proof lies on the woman to prove she is not a witch. Monty Python was not so far off in its estimation of trial as comparing a woman to the weight of a duck — if she weighs more than the duck, she is a witch.
Well.
And then there are entire entertainment empires based on the idea …

55 Years Ago This Month Rosa Parks Refused to Give Up Her Seat

Dec 20, 2010 | One Comment

The opinions expressed herein are those of the author, and not necessarily those of The New Agenda.
Fifty-five years ago this month, Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat. Historians call Dec. 1, 1955 the start of the Civil Rights Movement, when a 42-year-old seamstress in Montgomery, Alabama refused to cede her bus seat to a white passenger.
Parks was arrested for violating a city ordinance. But her decision to take a stand sparked a bus boycott that lasted 381 days. Martin Luther King, Jr. became the spokesperson for the boycott, …

Lady Columbia, Roll On!

Dec 6, 2010 | 2 Comments

The opinions expressed herein are those of the author, and not necessarily those of The New Agenda.
Lady Columbia, that rare female embodiment of the United States, made an appearance last week in the Washington Examiner:

Politics aside, it’s nice to see America show her feminine side!
Examiner cartoonist Nate Beeler presents Lady Columbia as a stately, elegant personification for the United States. No quivering, rickety legs on her, as we’ve come to expect from Uncle Sam!
It’s also heartening to see America’s ladylike alter ego carrying the shield of diplomacy. She is clearly …

TSA Patdowns Have No Limits and Are Dangerous for Women

Nov 19, 2010 | 15 Comments

The opinions expressed herein are those of the author, and not necessarily those of The New Agenda.
TSA agents can do whatever they want.
If that seems crazy, consider the facts. Here we have a government agency-gone-wild that gives officials total discretion over what circumstances require. If an individual in an airport seems suspicious, TSA agents can touch that passenger in whatever way they want until they are satisfied that the situation is safe.
Still sounds crazy? Department of Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano claims that airport security cameras take private photos merely …

Slide Show: Where Are the Heroines?

Nov 11, 2010 | 11 Comments

Newsweek notes that the ladies are notably absent from hero stories. Women are primarily featured in “sexy, tight, alluring clothes (usually with exposed skin between mid-chest and upper thigh). Their most common occupation is being a royal, and their aspirations are limited almost exclusively to finding romance.”
This isn’t a question of feminism; it’s a question of role models. Hey animated Hollywood: Where my girls at?!
Says Newsweek:
For decades, the majority of female characters in cartoons and family films have been mostly stuck behind the macho lead, baring their midriffs and looking …

Gawker Had a One-Night Stand with Journalism

Oct 29, 2010 | 18 Comments

The opinions expressed herein are those of the author, and not necessarily those of The New Agenda.
Christine O'Donnell, Senate candidate for Delaware
This is a story about a young man who comes close to a passionate night with a beautiful young woman but instead turns it into a tittering, mean-spirited tell-all, and in which Gawker has the same experience, but with journalism.
Christine O’Donnell once had a hook-up. Congratulations, America! Your sleuthing skills have really paid off.
But wait! This is no mere hook-up story. This is the oldest story in the …
