BBC’s Survivors

Jun 14, 2010 | 2 Comments

The opinions expressed herein are those of the author, and not necessarily those of The New Agenda.
I am a big fan of BBCAmerica, particularly its science fiction. British series are often short like a mini-series. By and large, its sci-fi has been the most positive in its portrayals of women. Other genres are not so positive.
Survivors was a post-apocalyptic British series that started in 2008 but was recently imported to the United States. It is complete. It centers around the aftereffects of a pandemic that …

Does the Media Promote Violence Against Women?

Jun 8, 2010 | 10 Comments

The opinions expressed herein are those of the author, and not necessarily those of The New Agenda.
By this point, the debate upon whether or not television, music, and movies has an impact upon society and personal beliefs is ridiculous. Television, music, and movies have been proven to contain a serious impact. And many organizations regardless of their stances on the spectrum over social issues acknowledge this impact.
GLAAD has its media awards which aim to hold “the media accountable for the words and images they present, and helping grassroots …

Glenn Beck – Stick to Politics – Not Breasts!

Jun 1, 2010 | 7 Comments

The opinions expressed herein are those of the author, and not necessarily those of The New Agenda.

“Excuse the expression”? Sometimes, I wonder what the problem with Glenn Beck is. I think he knows his comments bother people, but he says “excuse the expression” to avoid an angry blacklash.
Why criticize Michelle Obama’s breasts at all? That comment is sexist.
The occasion for Beck’s comment was the state dinner in which Mexican President Filipe Calderon condemned the Arizona immigration bill. The Arizona immigration bill is a highly …

Young Girls’ Groove: Dance or Pornography?

May 18, 2010 | 19 Comments

The definition of Gyrate is “to move with a circular or spiral motion, especially around a fixed central point” – especially but not necessarily. I cannot keep track of how many times these 7- and 8-year-olds rotate and swing their buttocks and chests back and forth. Their movements are much too rapid.
According to the 1986 – 1987 court case, United States v. Wiegand, the “lascivious exhibition of the genitals or pubic area” …

Clitoral Relativism: A “Nick”

May 16, 2010 | 22 Comments

The opinions expressed herein are those of the author, and not necessarily those of The New Agenda.
Oh, what is a little nick? Well, it depends upon what is being nicked off.
In the context of female genital mutilation, a nick is something that does not go all the way. It leaves the genital area partially-removed and partially-intact. Nicks can be considered a stepping stone toward the elimination of mutilation in countries that already approve of completely ravaging the female sexual system.
Does this country need such a stepping stone? …

Nations United Against Women

Nations United Against Women.
So… Iran was elected to the UN’s commission on the status of women. Some women are really upset over this. Well, I have not heard much from the major feminist organizations such as NOW. I have not heard much outrage from the Democratic party. Kirsten Gillibrand has spoken against this, but no condemnation from either Barack or Michelle Obama, nothing from Valerie Jarrett? Who is speaking …

Alison Weir, Writer of History

May 5, 2010 | 6 Comments

Alison Weir is a British author and historian. Her specialty is over the Tudor family. I was not interested in reading about the Tudors at first. All I knew was that King Henry the VIII broke apart from the Catholic church so that he could divorce his first wife, and then he rummaged through wives in an attempt to father an heir. However, I am interested in little-known aspects of history – people or things that have been forgotten or unnoticed. My interest in the …

Reebok at it again with Sexist Commercial

Apr 26, 2010 | 7 Comments

The opinions expressed herein are those of the author, and not necessarily those of The New Agenda. H/T to Brooke.

A few days ago, TNA received an email informing us that the sexist Reebok ads are still appearing on television, particularly on Lifetime – that channel supposedly designed for women. I like my body regardless of what anyone else thinks. Isn’t your ability to like your body a basis behind sexual empowerment? However, these Reebok ads are not about convincing women to like their bodies. The …

Realms of Fantasy: Women’s Issue

Apr 19, 2010 | One Comment

The opinions expressed herein are those of the author, and not necessarily those of The New Agenda.
Lately, I have been trying to alternate short stories with my novel. I decided to take a look at Ralan, a website that houses a list of magazines for submissions. Guess what I found on his front page? A link to combat rape and help rape victims. The link says “Support rape crisis centers and enter to win an advance copy of Red Hood’s Revenge, by Jim C. Hines.”
Ralan’s website …

PBA’s Kelly Kulick: “The pins don’t recognize gender”

Apr 16, 2010 | 2 Comments

The opinions expressed herein are those of the author, and not necessarily those of The New Agenda.
Kelly Kulick was born in 1977 in Union Township, New Jersey. She has always had a stronger interest in sports than academics. One of her first sports was Little League Baseball, although she wanted to be a pro-bowler as early as fifth-grade. She has been bowling since age six. She played basketball in high school but quit to practice bowling. She attended Morehead State University in Kentucky where she …
