Dear Neal Conan and NPR, Is This Really Normal?

Jul 7, 2009 | 27 Comments

From the bloggers (clockwise) Wonkette, B Gal R State, and Linda Kellan at Blue Oasis
I’ve been both a regular NPR listener and contributor — even, until recently, had NPR in the family will.  That’s why your interview of Vanity Fair’s Todd Purdam was so painful for me to hear.   I’m not singling out your interview because it was the worst coverage of Gov. Palin’s resignation — far from it.  Rather, I’m singling out your work because as an NPR fan, I found your coverage to be the most personally disappointing.
Let’s skip over the part where …

Echoes (Video): Sarah Palin and Andy Griffith

Jul 5, 2009 | 16 Comments

Andy Griffith had a wonderful way of allowing the character of Sheriff Andy Taylor to look foolish in order to teach  America lessons.  In this case, the lessons were of compassion, humanity, and equality.  Sadly, in the wake of Governor Palin’s resignation, it’s clear that those lessons are as relevant today as they were 50 years ago.

In the original show (episode 10 of season one, “Ellie for Council,” in reruns on TVLand), Andy redeems himself.  When he hears Opie bashing women, and realizes that the boy is just parroting his father, Andy …

CNN Anchor: Palin Playing the Victim; “Clintonian”

Jul 3, 2009 | 32 Comments

(This story picked up by NewsBusters.)
Rick Sanchez
In covering Sarah Palin’s resignation from the Governorship of Alaska, the CNN anchor [Update:  Rick Sanchez] said
Oh, I see.  So she’s basically kind of playing the victim here, as often times politicians do.  Well that’s interesting, somewhat Clintonian some would say.
He was reacting to Palin’s comment, as related by reporter “Andrew” [Update:  Andrew Wellner from the Mat-Su Valley Frontiersman]
You are naive if you don’t see a full court press right now on the national level, picking apart a good point guard.
Other comments Andrew related …

The Other Woman that Sanford Could Hurt

Jul 3, 2009 | 7 Comments

Mark Sanford at top.
I’ve received several e-mails suggesting a blog article commending Jenny Sanford, wife of SC Governor Mark Sanford for charting her own course as her husband (twice) confessed to adultery before the cameras.  I understand women’s support for her.  But here’s the hitch:  If we applaud Mrs. Sanford, we imply condemnation of other wives who have chosen differently.  And the bottom line is that it’s none of our business.  In my opinion, each woman in this situation has be free to choose what’s right for her and we need to allow her to …

Sad and Arrogant?

Archbishop Robert Duncan
The Anglican Church of North America convened for the first time in Texas last week, electing as their Archbishop Robert Duncan, whose qualifications for the post include the fact that he has a penis. Duncan is leading a group of what claims to be 100,000 parishioners and 50 bishops in breaking away from the 2-million member Episcopal Church USA, headed by Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori, who has no penis.
Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori
The schism roots reach back to the first Episcopal ordination of women thirty-three years ago …

Uncle Sam Out, Aunt Samantha In?

Jun 27, 2009 | 20 Comments

The author is a national political commentator and columnist on Fox News, Fox Business, CNN, CNBC and MSNBC.  This article is cross-posted from her blog.  She expresses her own opinions, not necessarily those of The New Agenda.
Andrea Tantaros
When it comes to politics and extramarital affairs the two, sadly, go hand in hand. There’s Edwards, Vitter, Clinton, Fossella, McGreevy, Sherwood, Hart, Spitzer, Condit, Ensign and now Governor Mark Sanford (I could go on, and on, but my columns have word limits).
When this situation occurs, as it regularly does, the public constantly finds itself …

Rose-Coloring Gender Diversity in the Obama Administration

Jun 25, 2009 | 5 Comments

Isn’t The National Journal embarrassed to call this journalism?  In conjunction with it’s Decision Makers issue, The National Journal has published “Obama’s Team:  the Face of Diversity,”  celebrating a rosy picture that – at least in the case of women — is contradicted by National Journal’s own data.   In his article highlighting the results of a survey of 366 of “the President’s Decision Makers,” James A. Barnes confesses to discarding 49 data points, people who previously worked for Bush and are mostly “white guys”.  Having thus distorted the data, Barnes concludes that Obama is a …

Drinking and Sexual Assault: A Dangerous Intersection Getting Worse

Jun 23, 2009 | One Comment

According to a new study by RTI published in the Journal of American College Health:

20% of undergraduate women are sexually assaulted during college and an additional 10% experience attempted assault
Over half of  assaults occured when the women were “incapacitated and unable to provide consent”

In sheer numbers, that means more than 97 thousand students  are victims of alcohol-related sexual assault EVERY YEAR, according to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism.  And the problem is getting worse, with binge drinking having risen now to 45% of students.
Many colleges are implementing aggressive education and …

Rihanna to Testify; Chris to “Smash”.
Media Still Tone-Deaf

Jun 21, 2009 | 6 Comments

Tonight, my thoughts are with Rihanna, who is scheduled to testify tomorrow morning at a preliminary hearing in Los Angeles against Chris Brown, charged with felony counts of assaulting her.  It must take immense bravery for Rihanna to testify in the face of not only the hurdles that any abused woman faces, but also intense scrutiny from tone-deaf media.  For example in the CNN Showbiz Tonight clip below, host AJ Hammer says:
I’d have to believe that she’d rather have this whole thing just kinda go away so she can get on with her life.
Really?  Are you …

Urban Girls: The Have Nots of Sports

Jun 20, 2009 | One Comment

Soledad Pierre walks her cousins home from school. Housework and childcare responsibilities often prevent her from practicing with her basketball team. Yet, such responsibilites are not equally shared by her older cousin Karl, who lives in the same household and plays basketball nearly every day.Photo credit: Nicole Bengiveno/NYT.
Marj Snyder, the Chief Program Officer of the Women’s Sports Foundation, says:
Urban girls are the have nots of sports and physical activities participation… Where is a girl going to learn how to be on a team?  That’s what she’s going to experience when …
