May 31, 2008 and Sexism
A bit of TNA herstory:
3 years ago today, I gave a speech at a rally in Washington DC organized around the DNC’s Rules and Bylaws Committee meeting.
I remember how angry and hurt I felt about the way Hillary Clinton had been treated by the media, and the DNC’s silence and therefore, in my mind complicity, to overt sexism.
It was a time of awakening for millions around the country to the notion of sexism, and the need for change. Months later, in August 2008, we founded The New Agenda and …

PETITION: MSNBC Pres Griffin – immediately institute Corporate Governance on Sexism or Resign!
The following op-ed is featured at The Daily Caller.
On Tuesday, MSNBC host Ed Schultz referred to radio show host Laura Ingram as a “slut.” In fact, the word flowed so effortlessly off his tongue, he referred to her as “slut” twice in two sentences! Yesterday, Schultz made an on-air apology and took a self-imposed one week suspension without pay.
But, Schultz’s short work leave is hardly fodder for revelry. Schultz is but an annoying gnat in the misogynistic cesspool that is MSNBC. Under MSNBC President Phil Griffin, …

20% of College Men Sexually Assault College Women
The following op-ed is featured at The Huffington Post.
Yesterday, Vice President Biden and Secretary Duncan announced a Sexual Assault Awareness Campaign. The impetus? The Department of Education acknowledges a grave threat to this generation: 20 percent of college women will be victims of rape or sexual assault!
We live in a civilized country, after all. Who is assaulting these young women? The answer, of course, is our college men! Ponder this: roughly 20% of our college men will rape or sexually assault a college woman before they graduate.
Let …

The Evaporating Women of Wall Street
Fewer women seem to be climbing the corporate ladder on Wall Street these days. Amy Siskind says it’s time to get rid of bad managers with gender bias—it would only be good business.
Where are the heroines of Wall Street? They were so conspicuous when I entered the workforce—the “tiger lady” in Baby Boom (1987) who starts a multimillion dollar company while raising a child, or the Working Girl (1988) who rides the Staten Island Ferry and orchestrates a colossal M&A transaction. The women of my generation …

Geraldine Ferraro Passes at the age of 75
On behalf of The New Agenda, our board and national members, I want to express our sincerest condolences to the family of Geraldine Ferraro. She was a woman ahead of her time who fought ferociously for women’s rights and representation. As our country’s first female vice presidential candidate, she gracefully withstood the vicious onslaught of sexism. She would later be cast as a racist for supporting another woman in her party in her quest to become our country’s first president.
I did have the pleasure and honor of speaking to Geraldine …

Hillary’s Speech at Women in the World Summit
As former SoS Madeleine Albright noted yesterday at lunch at the Women in the World Summit, women’s parts in the revolutions in the Middle East today can trace their roots to Hillary speech in Bejing in 1986.

My observations from Women in the World – Women in the Middle East
So much data, information and ideas floating around in my head from The Daily Beast/Newsweek Women in the World Summit. I’ll try to share as many as I can on our blog in the coming days.
I’d like to share some thoughts which stuck with me from a panel moderated by Christiane Amanpour. Participants on the panel about women in the Middle East:
Wajeha H. Al-Huwaider – Saudi Arabia – journalist and activist
Sussan Tahmasebi – Iran – Int’l Civil Society Action Network for Women’s Rights
Dalia Ziada – Egypt – author and activist
Zainab …

Sexism Fells Kathleen Parker
The following op-ed is featured at The Huffington Post.
Let’s face it, CNN has a women problem. Need proof? Do the math. Last year, seven major anchors left CNN. Of the seven, five were women!
Should we therefore be at all surprised by CNN’s modus operandi when ratings for Parker Spitzer hit the skids? Of course not. To get rid of the problem, get rid of the woman. In this case, Kathleen Parker.
The set-up was tediously typical of our media’s treatment of women in power. Yawn, it’s always the same. …

Why I went on local TV to discuss teen dating violence and eating disorders
I’ll admit: I was shocked.
After TNA released episode 3 of Searching for Sexism, Their Eyes Are Watching, I discovered that my daughter’s middle school curriculum does not cover teen dating violence and eating disorders. And I’m not alone. I’ve received emails from concerned parents all around the country who watched the video, called their school, and heard the same news!
Which is why TNA is doing something about it!
Please watch this local television interview on what parents can do to protect their children (skip to 9:15 for segment on …

Rachel Maddow’s “aha” moment (which she doesn’t realize she had)…
I find Rachel Maddow to be incredibly brilliant. Which is why I am constantly perplexed by her gender blinders. She is a study in contrast. She’ll advocate for positions (some) that are pro-women, yet she seems blind to gender bias and generally disinterested in gender representation.
I’m thinking in the segment below she just might have had an “aha” moment. Although, for sure, she doesn’t realize it.
Watch as Maddow speaks about the Republican women in Wyoming and how, due to their own life experiences, they understand the real …
