When Jokes Aren’t Funny
The opinions expressed herein are those of the author, and not necessarily those of The New Agenda.
I like to think of myself as having a pretty good sense of humor. I like to laugh, and I like to make other people laugh. One of my earliest memories is of a childhood attempt to drink orange pop through my nose at my sister’s birthday party. What can I say? Sometimes you have to suffer for your art.
My favorite joke of all time is really more of a groaner. It has a …

Women to the Rescue: Clinton, Palin and Bachmann
Over the last two weeks, as Newt Gingrich’s nomination prospects have been falling, voters’ dissatisfaction has been rising, and it has become clear that the presidential contest will likely be between incumbent President Barack Obama and former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney, an amazing thing has been happening.
Three women have been rising in the presidential field. Two are not even running.
Both Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin are the subjects of media speculations and draft efforts from former supporters (see: Clinton, Clinton, Palin, and Palin). While …

Business Startups Don’t Mix with Womanly Urges…NOT!
Everyday I check the news for articles relating to women and the sciences or math. I was intrigued by an article that came up in my search today called Women in Startups: Is There Room for Us and Our Mad Baby Fever? The author, Elisa Gabbert, was describing the horrific messages issued forth to women and the abysmal assumptions made in another article that was posted at TechCrunch by guest author Penelope Trunk on December 11. Ms. Trunk’s article was called Stop Telling Women to do Startups and the gist …

Narrowing the Confidence Interval of Gender Differences in Math and Science
The opinions expressed herein are those of the author, and not necessarily those of The New Agenda.
The conventional “wisdom” tells society that males are better at math and science than females. However, these myths are being debunked. As we at The New Agenda shared in September, the difference in male and female brain function, when it comes to performing mathematical or scientific tasks, is non-existent. Why is this stereotype perpetuated? Even though great strides have been made in gender equity and gender perception, our society has not been without its …

Gender Bias in Media Reporting of Sex Abuse in Sports
The opinions expressed herein are those of the author, and not necessarily those of The New Agenda.
“Millions of children are lacing up sneakers and skates, donning swimsuits and grabbing rackets to join the ranks of youth sports teams and leagues across the country, often with minimal parental supervision.”
“But accusations of abuse last week against a major figure in amateur athletics have renewed concerns that the dynamics of youth sports could provide predators easy access to children in an environment where abuse could go undetected.” Reuters, 12/12/11
The above quote from Reuters was …

Girlfriend, Work that Network!
The end of “fair” comes the day of college graduation.
True, women account for more than 50% of college students. But not in the workplace. In fields like corporate management and politics, men still occupy roughly 83% of leadership roles!

“Everything Becomes Whole” – Sarah Fimm
The opinions expressed herein are those of the author, and not necessarily those of The New Agenda.
I had recently had the opportunity to see the new music video by Billboard acclaimed Singer/Songwriter Sarah Fimm for the cause- based song “Everything Becomes Whole.”
Being that October was Domestic Violence awareness month, it is important for Sarah to continue to highlight the nightmare of domestic violence and the effect that it has on its victims. Sarah’s song/video carries a powerful message and it’s the voices of many women suffering from domestic violence. “Everything …

Porning Politics: How Pornification is Making the (Political) World a Worse Place
The opinions expressed herein are those of the author, and not necessarily those of The New Agenda.
In his recent Huffington Post piece, Mike Edison made his case for “How Sex Magazines Made the World a Better Place.” His conclusion? In addition to supposedly holding “pictures of naked ladies” in a “more sacred light” than does today’s internet porn, Edison asserted that magazines like Screw and Hustler were “ground zero for relentless freedom of speech in the form of tasteless comedy, brutal political satire, and, of course, naked ladies.” As an …

It’s Unanimous! FBI to Change 82 Year Old Definition of Rape
The opinions expressed herein are those of the author, and not necessarily those of The New Agenda.
On Tuesday, December 6, 2011 the FBI’s Advisory Policy Board voted unanimously to change their official definition of the word “rape.” Since 1929, the FBI’s Uniform Crime Reporting Program has defined “forcible rape” as “the carnal knowledge of a female forcibly and against her will.” The Board’s new definition is: “Penetration, no matter how slight, of the vagina or anus with any body part or object, or oral penetration by a sex organ of another person, without …
