“I want to live where soul meets body and let the sun wrap its arms around me, and bathe my skin in water cool and cleansing, and feel what it’s like to be new.”—Death Cab for Cutie
Life after abuse is possible. Though it has been said that time heals all wounds, that has not been my experience. However accepting myself along with the vicissitudes that emerge from living life completely helps me to feel …

Sep 28, 2011 | 4 Comments

The opinions expressed herein are those of the author, and not necessarily those of The New Agenda.
It was a joy to see the magnificent Margo Martindale receive an Emmy for her work as the villainous backwoods matriarch Mags Bennett on FX’s “Justified” this season. But as heartening as it was to see a 60 year old character actress being recognized for her portrayal of a complex, distinctly non-cookie cutter character — and one originally written for a man — she is something of an anomaly in a world where actresses …

This year I have started a new chapter of my life, I am going back to school after being out of the system for more than 15 years.
My career has reached a roadblock due to the fact that I do not have three letters following my name…P…h…D.  The coursework that I am engaged in is rigorous and the classes require that I learn to program using software such as MATLAB; hone my skills in …

Saudi Women Will Get to Vote

Sep 26, 2011 | No Comment

The opinions expressed herein are those of the author, and not necessarily those of The New Agenda.
Earlier this year, Saudi women started a movement to be allowed to drive. It sounds ridiculous — that women cannot get behind the wheel of a car and drive — and yet this is their reality. Although there is no actual law that says women are not allowed to drive cars, there is a religious edict that insists on the segregation of men and women; therefore, if women need to get anywhere, a man …

How the Media Train Boys to be Sexist

Sep 24, 2011 | 2 Comments

The following post is cross-posted by Erin McNeill’s blog Marketing, Media, and Childhood. The opinions expressed herein are those of the author, and not necessarily those of The New Agenda.
Watch this trailer from the Media Education Foundation, which highlights the powerful messages boys are getting from current popular media. Or, as they put it, “Takes aim at the forces in male culture that condition boys and men to dehumanize and disrespect women.”
The issue with negative media messages to our children, as I see it, is not so much how those …

Woman Author Says: Enough with the Girly Covers!

Sep 23, 2011 | 8 Comments

The opinions expressed herein are those of the author, and not necessarily those of The New Agenda.

Mary Johnson will discuss her memoir, Mother Teresa in Search of Love, Service, and an Authentic Life, at the Brooklyn Museum this Sunday, September 25, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. (Travel directions.)

My new book has a very girly cover. There’s nothing inherently wrong about a book cover on which red and white petals fall on a panel of dark wood—but my book is about having been a nun for twenty years with Mother Teresa …

Scott Brown, the American Federation of Teachers and The Myth of the B*tch Queen

Sep 21, 2011 | 9 Comments

The opinions expressed herein are those of the author, and not necessarily those of The New Agenda.
Here’s a riddle: What do Elizabeth Warren, Hillary Clinton, Sarah Palin, Michele Bachmann, Nancy Pelosi, Maxine Waters and Patty Murray have in common? Well, they all descend from royalty of course! Or at least that’s how their adversaries would classify them.
Elizabeth Warren was recently coined “Queen Elizabeth” by the Scott Brown campaign when they registered a ‘Queen Elizabeth Warren’ website in anticipation of the Senate race.
In a 2009 article, Andrew Sullivan mockingly referred to …
