Fall’s Biggest Fashion Trend is Politics

Aug 31, 2011 | 6 Comments

This September, the question is not what’s in Vogue, but who’s in Vogue – and Elle and Glamour. The answer: powerful female politicians and activists talking policy from all across the ideological spectrum.
Vogue interviewed Christine Lagarde, the recently appointed managing director of the International Monetary Fund. Although the profile centered on her “oatmeal-hued suit,” “bandbox-neat” appearance, and overall “elegance,” it also discussed her “classically liberal” leanings towards Adam Smith’s economic thought, meaning her preferences for “free trade and minimal government intervention, positions usually associated with conservatism.” Further, it quoted her …

Women’s Equality Day: What the Heck Do I Tell My Daughter?

Aug 30, 2011 | No Comment

Today [August 26, 2011] is Women’s Equality Day. At the center of my mind today is:

What the heck do I tell my daughter?
How do I tell my daughter about the fact that despite many gains made for women’s (and mothers’) equality, women still don’t earn equal pay for equal work? Women now make, on average, only 77 cents for every dollar …

We love a hero, and she’s a Prairie Bitch

Aug 29, 2011 | 2 Comments

I got a Kindle this spring and have had a chance to do a lot of summer reading for pleasure.  One of the great things about owning an electronic book is that if one is in a quandary about what to read next, one can instantaneously search what other e-books have been popular with the millions of readers who own one too.  That is where I found Confessions of a Prairie Bitch: How I …

The New Woman Suffrage Agenda

Aug 26, 2011 | 6 Comments

Happy Women’s Equality Day! What’s that, you say? You’ve never heard of “Women’s Equality Day”? That’s understandable. It lacks the latent potential for commercialization that makes other manufactured holidays a hit with card companies, chocolate makers, and florists. I went to my local Hallmark and found no cards with the appropriate sentiment: “On the occasion of earning full citizenship rights . . . .” or “Baby, we have come a long way!”
Originally conceived …

Debut Memoir, being Ana, Exposes the Depth Behind the Trivial Pursuit of Thinness

Aug 24, 2011 | 2 Comments

being Ana: a memoir of anorexia nervosaThe image accompanying this text is not a generic stock library photograph for which I paid a royalty fee, although it could be. We all know decapitated, limbless, faceless, nameless women are all the rage in advertising. It would make the perfect backdrop (bar the luminous green Lycra sweatpants) for catchy text lambasting women’s brains in order to sell ‘wonder’ beer. Instead, it’s more personal than that. …

No Dorothy Yet, In Our Land of Oz

Aug 22, 2011 | 3 Comments

Last week, a friend sent me a fun bit of political humor (h/t S. Moss):
The movie Wizard of Oz is 72 years old.

Today, if Dorothy were to encounter Men
with no brains, no hearts, and no courage
She wouldn’t be in Oz …

Does Facebook Condone A “Culture Of Rape”?

Aug 20, 2011 | 2 Comments

This week, I was bombarded with messages from Facebook friends about a Facebook page that has them outraged, and rightly so.
The Facebook page that Grufferman takes on. Click the above screenshot to view more.
In the last few weeks I’ve posted a series of articles focusing on the status of women in America, the Equal Rights Amendment, and the ongoing pay …
