Mar 7, 2011 | 6 Comments

The New Agenda is honored to present Part III of Rasha’s Story, a series about the lives of women and girls in Saudi Arabia, written by a young Saudi mother.  You can read more about Rasha in Part I, Part II and Part III.
We encourage our viewers to leave questions for Rasha for future blog posts – or show support of her extraordinary courage in speaking out. Of special note in this piece is the graphic provided, which Rasha explains shows a rare occurrence – a woman lawyer.
If I had to …

Internet Porn: Desensitizing Men, and Increasing Brutality Towards Women

Mar 5, 2011 | 15 Comments

The opinions expressed herein are those of the author, and not necessarily those of The New Agenda.
When we think about internet pornography, we tend to think about people having sex and the objectification of women.  However, I was recently enlightened by a friend to a new aspect of internet pornography: rape.  While we were chatting, he showed me a free website that allows internet users to watch a large collection of adult videos that covered every possible fetish imaginable.  What he showed me next had me deeply disturbed.  There was …

Life Perspective From a Woman Living in Poverty

Mar 4, 2011 | 17 Comments

The opinions expressed herein are those of the author, and not necessarily those of The New Agenda.
I am a poor woman who has been poor all of my life. I make under 10,000 dollars a year and have had to rely on both government aid and charity. This is often seen as a racial issue but no one sees it as a gender issue. The majority of people who are living in poverty are female and it is the female who must deal with everything that goes with …

Rachel Maddow’s Wyoming Awakening: Republican Women and Gender Parity

Mar 3, 2011 | 13 Comments

The opinions expressed herein are those of the author, and not necessarily those of The New Agenda.
Remember last week when Amy posted a blog piece about Rachel Maddow’s “aha” moment. Quite a few of the readers were annoyed by the arrogance to the point that the accomplishments of the female Republican Wyoming state senators were overshadowed in the discussion.
In contrast to some guys at NBC, Rachel made up for it. She cut the East Coast Metro type arrogance and did a follow up interview, highlighting the successes of State …

Celebrating Angelia: A Woman in Her Own Right

Mar 2, 2011 | 10 Comments

The opinions expressed herein are those of the author, and not necessarily those of The New Agenda.
My adoptive mother, Angelia, was independent and autonomous. She epitomized the kind of autonomy all women should have; the kind of self-authority and volition my biological mother had never experienced in her life as an abused daughter, an indentured servant, and a victim of multiple rapes. Her authority was given to the will of a man who pimped her out for cash.
Ironically, at the age of eight, I was given up for …

Obama Administration releases “Women in America” report

Mar 1, 2011 | No Comment

Today with the arrival of Women’s History Month, the Obama Adminstration released a report titled Women in America and touted it as “the first comprehensive report on the status of women in almost 50 years.”
The report was prepared for the White House Council on Women and Girls.
But how is the Obama Administration doing on women’s issues?   Here’s what TNA’s Amy Siskind told The Daily Caller.
On the White House Council on Women and Girls:
Women advocates such as Amy Siskind, co-founder of The New Agenda, have been frustrated, however, at the White …

Velma Davis Embry: Working Class Hero

Mar 1, 2011 | 8 Comments

My Grandmother, Velma Davis Embry, behind the lunch counter at her first restaurant.
My favorite time of year is upon us as of today: Women’s History Month! The theme for 2011’s Women’s History Month is Our History is Our Strength. The idea behind the theme is to integrate the traditional, trailblazing histories we usually cover with the local and social histories of women from our communities, and indeed, of our families.  Every woman has a place in some kind of history.
With that theme in mind, I thought I’d share the story …
