The Aftermath of the Women’s March in Egypt
The opinions expressed herein are those of the author, and not necessarily those of The New Agenda.
On Tuesday, women in Egypt took to the streets to celebrate INTERNATIONAL WOMAN’S DAY, and presumably their male counterparts, the ones who celebrated with then at the fall of Murbark, were to join them to celebrate “ democracy coming to Egypt”… So what happened? Did they meet with unity and celebration by their male counterpart? Hardly- they were met with hackles, verbal assaults and shades of Lara Logan, physical and sexual assaults. More than …

Sign Petition to Hold NYT Accountable for Rape Culture!
h/t to Shelby Knox for starting this petition and to Joanne Bamberger for making us aware of the crime.
The New York Times reported today on the gruesome gang rape of an 11 year-old girl in Texas. You can read about this travesty here.
You can also read how the NYT reporter then proceeds to blame the 11 year-old victim (emphasis added):
Residents in the neighborhood where the abandoned trailer stands — known as the Quarters — said the victim had been visiting various friends there for months. They said she dressed older …

Not Hot? Then You Don’t Count How Slate.com Misses the Bar on Newsweek’s Relaunch
The opinions expressed herein are those of the author, and not necessarily those of The New Agenda.
In a scathing review of Tina Brown’s re-launch of Newsweek, Slate’s editor-at-large Jack Shafer betrayed himself as another in a long list of journalists and pundits who find women bring little of use to the table. While I have had reason to fault Newsweek in the past for their biased coverage negating qualified female political candidates, it is ironic that in the reinvented Newsweek, a complimentary cover story about Hillary Clinton gets trashed by …

Slate Serves Up Misogyny for International Women’s Day
The opinions expressed herein are those of the author, and not necessarily those of The New Agenda.
“What’s Not Hot?” This blatantly misogynistic headline is how Jack Shafer celebrates International Women’s Day with his review on the Tina Brown’s debut issue of the Newsweek redesign. “Newsweek suffers [an]… avoidance of newsiness and the week” he says while complaining about “the queen of cold, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton” on the cover, a list of “150 Women Who Shake the World” and the “women theme” throughout.
It’s not enough to stop the dismissiveness at …

Million Women March Planned in Egypt!!!
The opinions expressed herein are those of the author, and not necessarily those of The New Agenda.
Egyptian women fought alongside men in the Tahrir Square revolution feeling the power of equality which was critical to the success of the movement. Yet, as the country rebuilds itself, the New York Times reports there have been some disappointments for women seeking equality and true democracy.
The committee of eight legal experts appointed by the military authorities to revise the Constitution did not include a single woman or, according to Amal abd al-Hadi, a longtime feminist here, anyone with a …
