Stop Blaming the Victims! Irene Morales Speaks Out!
The opinions expressed herein and those of the author, and not necessarily those of The New Agenda.
Blaming the victim has got to stop. Within the past week, two stories have hit the news reminding us (in case we hadforgotten!) that crimes against women continue, and women are always the first to be blamed. First, we heard of the alleged gang rape of an 11 year old girl in Texas, and she was in essence, blamed for the rape not only by the NY Times article’s insinuation, but also by the …

WHM: The Parnell Sisters & The Ladies Land Leagues
Today is St. Patrick’s Day, one of my favorite non-official holidays. Like many Americans, I’m pretty much a mix of various European ethnicities, with a pinch of Native American here and there. Probably the strongest strand in this genetic construction that is me is the Irish thread. My maiden name is Patterson, so of course it’s been a lifelong identification. I love to read Irish literature, listen to Irish music, and the brogue hits my ear like a melody every time. Their history is pretty fascinating as well, and this …

A MUST WATCH: Sen Kirsten Gillibrand Speaks Out on Lack of Women Leaders and the state of the Women’s Movement
Check out Senator Kirsten Gillibrand at the Daily Beast/Newsweek Women in the World Summit.
At 32:00, Sen Gillibrand says this about the current state of the women’s movement:
I think the women’s movement has died. I think it is moribund. There are advocacy groups that are doing great work right now but mostly in reproductive rights not in the panoply of other issues that effect women. Women spend so little money on women’s rights and advocacy compared to other advocacy organizations.
A synopsis of other remarks on the importance of …

What is the Color of “Honor”?
Emine Dilek is the Co-Editor of WVoN. The opinions expressed herein are those of the author, and not necessarily those of The New Agenda.
Medine Mehmi was a 16-year-old girl who was buried alive under a chicken coop in Adiyaman* because she was “befriending” boys. Her father and grandfather decided that their family’s “honor” was stained by her behavior. Her life was the price she had to pay.
As in most countries where honor killings go on, there are laws in place in Turkey to protect women, but they are not enforced …

LETTER: Harriet Tubman Statue is Precisely about Race and Gender
Dr. Lynette Long is President of Equal Visibility Everywhere the organization that conceptualized the project to put Harriet Tubman in National Statuary Hall. The opinions expressed herein are those of the author, and not necessarily those of The New Agenda.
The Maryland legislature has a chance to select a new famous Marylander to stand in National Statuary Hall in our nation’s capitol. Currently, John Hanson and Charles Carroll, both colonial-era patriots, represent Maryland in National Statuary Hall. Since each state is only allowed two statues in National Statuary Hall …

Finally! Three Young Sisters Call Attention to the Degradation of Women in Rap & Hip-Hop Music
The opinions expressed herein are those of the author, and not necessarily those of The New Agenda.
I thought I would share with everyone a glimmer of hope for the future of our daughters. Calling their group “Watoto From the Nile”, three young sisters, Nia, 10, Nya, 9, and Kamaria, 5, along with the help of their father, have decided to take a stand against the offensive lyrics of rap and hip-hop music by writing “Letter to Lil Wayne”. “Lil Wayne” is an incredibly popular and successful rapper who has impacted …

Hillary’s Speech at Women in the World Summit
As former SoS Madeleine Albright noted yesterday at lunch at the Women in the World Summit, women’s parts in the revolutions in the Middle East today can trace their roots to Hillary speech in Bejing in 1986.

Invisible Women: Where Is Half The World’s Population?

“I hadn’t thought about it,” said award-winning science writer Jessa Gamble.
We sat side-by-side in the theater at Ted Global 2010 in Oxford, UK, chatting as we waited for the next in a lineup of stellar speakers (of which 29% were women), at one of the world’s premier conferences (TED basics here: TED 101 (Or TED For Dummies)).
Gamble told me she planned to organize a TEDx …

My observations from Women in the World – Women in the Middle East
So much data, information and ideas floating around in my head from The Daily Beast/Newsweek Women in the World Summit. I’ll try to share as many as I can on our blog in the coming days.
I’d like to share some thoughts which stuck with me from a panel moderated by Christiane Amanpour. Participants on the panel about women in the Middle East:
Wajeha H. Al-Huwaider – Saudi Arabia – journalist and activist
Sussan Tahmasebi – Iran – Int’l Civil Society Action Network for Women’s Rights
Dalia Ziada – Egypt – author and activist
Zainab …
