Check out Senator Kirsten Gillibrand at the Daily Beast/Newsweek Women in the World Summit.
At 32:00, Sen Gillibrand says this about the current state of the women’s movement:
I think the women’s movement has died. I think it is moribund. There are advocacy groups that are doing great work right now but mostly in reproductive rights not in the panoply of other issues that effect women. Women spend so little money on women’s rights and advocacy compared to other advocacy organizations.
A synopsis of other remarks on the importance of women in power from the Senator’s website:

Well I would say the old “women’s movement” organizations are now Zombie organizations that are controlled by liberal cheer leaders, fear mongers and excuse makers. They act like help-meets for any racial or sexual orientation causes but can’t even recognize an issue of importance to real authentic women.
Say it Gillibrand! Can you imagine what work conditions might be like if 50 percent of Fortune 500 CEOs were women? What would television look like if 50 percent of the writers/ producers, etc. were women? Women need to enter in equal forces ALL the power positions.
She is absolutely correct. The Women’s Movement is moribund. Because it has made it’s only focus the right to control the uterus.
But women are so much more than their uterus’. They are daughters, sisters, mothers, lovers, consumers and providers.
Any movement that focuses solely on the right to an abortion (no matter how important or well meaning that is) is doomed to let us down.
I would love to see a new women’s movement based on womens power as consumers. That would change advertising and media. It would change product design and clothing options.
As it is we would be better off with a dead women’s movement. The once grand orgs like NOW stager around in their zombieized state and ruin the reputation and memory of once proud women’s orgs.
