Teachable Moments

Mar 31, 2011 | 2 Comments

The opinions expressed herein are those of the author, and not necessarily those of The New Agenda. Dan Johnson is on the Board of Directors of the  Girls Campaign.
Last weekend I was taking my teenage son and two friends to a sleepover when a song by Chris Brown, R&B singer, came on the radio. This is the Chris Brown who, in early 2009, was charged with felony assault and making criminal threats against then girlfriend, and fellow R&B singer, Rihanna. After accepting a plea deal, community labor and five …

What Will It Take To Elect a Woman as Commander in Chief?

Mar 30, 2011 | 7 Comments

The opinions expressed herein are those of the author, and not necessarily those of The New Agenda.

According to Politico, Secretary of State Clinton stated “it’s time for the United States to join South American countries in electing female presidents” at her recent policy talk on South America :

“I must say, I’m far enough away from my own career in electoral politics that I will not take too much heat for suggesting that these women and societies can teach American voters a thing …

Change A Thousand Lives: Amy Siskind and The New Agenda

Mar 29, 2011 | 9 Comments

The following article was written by a very talented young journalist named Molly, who lives in Colorado and is 12 years-old.  The article appears on New Moon Girls, a website and magazine for girls 8-12 years-old.
Would you like to change the world for girls and women? For most of us, the
answer is yes. However, it takes lots of dedication to actually take action and to make a
difference. Even so, this is what Amy Siskind, President of The New Agenda, has done.

Geraldine Ferraro: I Remember You

Mar 28, 2011 | 8 Comments

Geraldine “Gerry” Ferraro, a former prosecutor and United States Representative, and who, in 1984, became the first woman to run for Vice President on a major party ticket, died Saturday from complications from a blood cancer she had been fighting for 12 years. She was 75 years old.
Ms. Ferraro devoted so much of her life to helping her fellow women. During Women’s History Month, it is right that we should recount her life story, and with reverence, express our gratitude. Geraldine Ferraro has earned her place in history for her …

ABC calls it: The Economic “He-Covery”

Mar 27, 2011 | No Comment

The opinions expressed herein are those of the author, and not necessarily those of The New Agenda.
Over several decades, the press has trumpeted the gains of working women.  We hear women are closing the wage gap and there are more women in the executive suites. We are told that more women are pursuing higher degrees, and that more women are in the workforce than men.  But behind chirpy headlines and sound bites is a more nuanced reality.
Women may be closing the wage gap, but they are making 80 cents for …

Geraldine Ferraro Passes at the age of 75

Mar 26, 2011 | 2 Comments

On behalf of The New Agenda, our board and national members, I want to express our sincerest condolences to the family of Geraldine Ferraro.  She was a woman ahead of her time who fought ferociously for women’s rights and representation.   As our country’s first female vice presidential candidate, she gracefully withstood the vicious onslaught of sexism.  She would later be cast as a racist for supporting another woman in her party in her quest to become our country’s first president.
I did have the pleasure and honor of speaking to Geraldine …

TNA Speaks out about American Apparel CEO and Libya/Women Leaders

Mar 25, 2011 | No Comment

The New Agenda’s Amy Siskind had some rather harsh words for American Apparel CEO, Dov Charney over at The Daily Caller:
Amy Siskind, president of The New Agenda, has spoken out and issued action alerts about the ways in which American Apparel has “sexualized” the women in the company’s advertisements.
“This man is a predatory scumbag,” Siskind told The Daily Caller. “He’s seeking out young girls underage, hiring them, and being sexually exploitative of them. I think they should send him to jail and throw away the key. I can’t say enough …
