The New Agenda presents Episode 3 of our video series Searching for Sexism: Their Eyes Are Watching.
Watch how our pop culture impacts the self-images of our teenage girls.
February is
Teen Dating Violence Prevention and Awareness Month ; and
Eating Disorder Awareness Month.
Some shocking, but true, statistics:
* 55% of 7- to 12-year-old girls say they want to be thinner;
* almost half of girls in 5th-12th grade reported wanting to lose weight because of magazine pictures;
* 22% of teen girls have texted nude or semi-nude photos of themselves;
* 1 in 3 teens in relationships have experienced the most serious forms of dating violence and abuse.

I am really surprised at the lack of normal girls portrayed in media. The sleaze shows they aim at young women do not have that many viewers so you would think Corporate Media would be open to new ideas of what “women’s content” is, however they do not seem to be. So who is pushing the narrow distorted definition of women? Advertisers? Media establishment? The few women who have jobs in media?
Thank you for this series. We are in a sad state of affairs are we not? I cringe every time I see the tiny tots made up like mini hookers for some pageant. Trying to buy appropriate clothing for my daughter was always a time consuming frustrating experience- and today’s offerings are worse.
I will pass this around. keep up the great work!
Confusing!
For as long as I can remember photos of men and women together show her to be dressed for temperatures of 80 degrees F while he is prepared for temperatures of around 60 degrees F. He normally looks business like while she looks like an item on the desert menu. Her shoes prohibit her from running away should a situation become unpleasant. Perhaps our wardrobes are harming our health, safety and self image. Are we cupcakes?
Deb exactly what I am thinking watching parades in winter. chearleaders in swimsuit like clothes, the guys long sleeved. and the shoes . they can’t run, they ruin their spines for life. we don’t need feet binding like in old china, feet are destroyed by the fashion industry.
