Sarah Palin vs. the 1990s

Nov 30, 2010 | 59 Comments

The opinions expressed herein are those of the author, and not necessarily those of The New Agenda. This article was cross-posted from Speaker of the House at The Stir. The author blogs at PunditMom.

Sarah Palin is out to get the 1990s.  At least that’s what I have to assume from some cultural references she’s trotted out in her new book, America By Heart.
According to excerpts from the book, she’s got it in for Hillary Clinton and fictional newswoman Murphy Brown, two female icons of the 1990s. But why is Palin …

Urge Sen Murray to Take DSCC Chairwoman Role!

Nov 29, 2010 | 4 Comments

Senator Patty Murray is considering taking on the role as head of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committtee (“DSCC”) for the 2011-2012.
In this role, Murray could have say in funding and selection of 2012 candidates for the U.S. Senate.  POLITICO reports:
Washington Sen. Patty Murray has emerged as a leading candidate to take the pivotal job of running the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee in the 2011-12 cycle and will decide as early as next week, according to several Democratic insiders familiar with the talks.
Nothing has been finalized yet, these Democratic sources cautioned. …

Ratifying CEDAW

Nov 28, 2010 | 3 Comments

The opinions expressed herein are those of the author, and not necessarily those of The New Agenda.
The Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women, or CEDAW, is finally getting a chance at ratification. Often called an international “Bill of Rights” for women, CEDAW is the culmination of more than thirty years of work by the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women. The United States is the only developed nation that has not ratified this treaty.
“In my travels, the No. …

Disney: No More Fairytales

Nov 26, 2010 | 5 Comments

The opinions expressed herein are those of the author, and not necessarily those of The New Agenda.
Disney last week said that they would no longer be producing fairy tale movies, a staple of that studio since Snow White and Cinderella, animated features starring princesses.
The net result of this move however, may be to eliminate female-centric product from the studio. None of the Pixar products thus far released has been geared to girls, and under the Disney banner its current product Tangled, is a reworking of the Rapunzel story by Grim, …

A History of Thanksgiving

Nov 25, 2010 | No Comment

The opinions expressed herein are those of the author, and not necessarily those of The New Agenda.
Sarah Josepha Hale
In celebration of the Thanksgiving holiday, the National Women’s History Museum has released, “A History of Thanksgiving,” a short video that explores the origins of the festival and the special role that Sarah Josepha Hale, the “Mother of Thanksgiving,” played in establishing the holiday.
It is a little known, but nonetheless significant fact that Thanksgiving, a national day of shared acknowledgement and gratitude for the blessings …

Mean Girls Attack Palin

Nov 23, 2010 | 31 Comments

Watch as Judith Miller and Liz Trotta attack Sarah Palin – off mike – they think.
Notice that the men do not say a thing.  Shock perhaps as the claw come out?

Why is it that women feel to need to diminish other women? Who are Judith and Liz aiming to appeal to exactly?  Junior high school is over!
And this to Barbara Bush: Are you serious? You simply can’t be.  Your think your son is more qualified than Sarah Palin? For real?

What Makes You Stronger

Nov 23, 2010 | 18 Comments

The opinions expressed herein are those of the author, and not necessarily those of The New Agenda.
My family and I enjoyed the newest Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Pt. 1 movie on Sunday evening.  I have read the entire Harry Potter series [numerous times] and as a feminist always look forward to seeing on-screen heroic acts performed by Hermione Granger and Ginny Weasley.  The movie did not disappoint me in that regard.  As much as I know that Harry Potter is the main character, I also know that without …

Why Megyn?

Nov 22, 2010 | 17 Comments

Fox News Anchor Megyn Kelly will be featured in December’s issue of GQ. The rising star will be featured in an article titled: “She Reports, We Decided She’s Hot.”
Which leads us to ask: What’s up girlfriend? You got it all going. Why portray yourself in this sexualized manner?

In the words of Megyn’s network: We report, you decide. So tell us TNA viewers, what say you?

Election Updates

Nov 21, 2010 | One Comment

In the wake of the recent midterm election, four races among the 252 featuring female candidates remained too close to call. Two are still uncertified, one race was lost, and one has been won.
Republican Renee Ellmers has been declared the winner in her bid to unseat incumbent Democrat Bob Etheridge in North Carolina’s 2nd District. Ellmers won despite little party support, and a self-financed recount that Etheridge asked for. She is one of the women Sarah Palin endorsed on the 90th anniversary of the 19th Amendment.
Three-term Democratic Representative Melissa Bean …

War Rape: Why Do We Accept Female Genocide?

Nov 20, 2010 | 12 Comments

About 10 years ago, I sat with a fairly sophisticated crowd at a special event in New York City hosted by a popular  fashion magazine on “issues important to women.”  Mixed in with talks on health, wellness and the environment, was a chilling presentation on Afghan women and the rise of the Taliban.
Like most Americans pre-9/11, I had never heard of the Taliban.  Like the women I sat with that night, I had no clue about Afghan women who were summarily barred from participation in their society when the Taliban took power.
How, I …
