Making Candidates Pay for Sexism: CA Governor Race Goes ‘Toss Up’

Oct 18, 2010 | 6 Comments

It’s time that politicians pay for allowing sexism.  Whether it be a sexist comment, or condoning sexism in a campaign.  We need to make sure that sexism has repercussions.  Just ask Jerry Brown.
Over the weekend, RealClearPolitics moved the California Governor Race from “Lean Dem” to “Toss Up“.
The New Agenda played a big part in calling out Brown and helping Meg Whitman. We stood by Meg Whitman and said NO! to sexism!
We appeared on MSNBC to explain that “yes”, the term ‘whore’ is offensive to men and women. We …

Thank you Dana Perino!

Oct 17, 2010 | 10 Comments

I had the misfortune today of reading Maureen Dowd’s latest masterpiece in misogyny: Playing All the Angles.
I was steaming – even took to my Facebook page to say out loud what I was feeling: “Okay, I just have to say it: MAUREEN DOWD SUCKS! There, that’s better.”
I happened upon an op-ed response by Dana Perino on RealClearPolitics: Mean Maureen.  Thank you Dana for stating what I was thinking and feeling so eloquently. I am so thoroughly sick and tired of women being women’s worst enemies.
Dana – Thank …

Sexism 2010: Riding the Coattails of 2008

Oct 17, 2010 | 23 Comments

The opinions expressed herein are those of the author, and not necessarily those of The New Agenda.
Back in 2008 then candidate Obama benefited greatly from sexism and misogyny thrown at his female opponents, Hillary Clinton and later Sarah Palin. The Obama campaign didn’t only benefit from this onslaught of sexism – they used it to their full advantage. His campaign threw out sexist statements such as “suddenly the claws come out” when referring to Hillary Clinton, then there was the “You can put lipstick on a pig” quote after McCain’s …

Whore, Slut, Bitch & Cunt: Is it Okay to Use These Words?

Oct 16, 2010 | 20 Comments

The opinions expressed herein are those of the author, and not necessarily those of The New Agenda.
So we all know now that (former) Governor Jerry Brown does not think much of calling a woman a whore. His hasty apology during the most recent debate reeked of insincerity as he went on to excuse his campaign by oddly reminding us that the sexist slur was said behind closed doors. Oh, and being called a “whore” is nothing compared to being called a “nigger,” Brown suggested to the women of California.

Shocker: Weight Affects Women’s Paychecks More Than Men’s

Oct 15, 2010 | 9 Comments

The opinions expressed herein are those of the author, and not necessarily those of The New Agenda.
New studies suggest that very thin women earn proportionately more money than do average-sized women. Comprising only women within 25lbs of doctor-recommended weight, the latter study strictly compares the rail-thin to her average-sized female colleagues.

The Wall Street Journal reports this week that employers “seem to treat women…the way the fashion industry does”; thin women get much higher paychecks than do average-weight women, while thin men tend to earn less than their average-weight colleagues:
The study …

Why Hillary’s Army Should Rally Around Meg Whitman

Oct 14, 2010 | 21 Comments

The following op-ed by The New Agenda’s Amy Siskind appears on the front page of The Huffington Post.
Jerry Brown just doesn’t get it.
During Tuesday night’s California gubernatorial debate, moderator Tom Brokaw asked Brown about a member of his staff using the word “whore” in reference to Meg Whitman:
BROKAW:….We’ve heard no outrage from you about the use of that kind of language which to many women is the same as calling an African-American the n-word…
BROWN: I don’t agree with that comparison…
Hillary Clinton supporters:  are you having deja vu back …

The Truth about Why Democratic Women are Losing

Oct 13, 2010 | 17 Comments

As reported recently in Politico, Democratic women are in danger of losing electoral ground in the midterm. This stunning development threatens to decrease the number of women in Congress for the first time in 32 years.
Here’s what you won’t read in the article: If Democrats emerge with fewer women in Congress this year it will not be just because of a Republican wave (or avalanche); it’ll also be because the Democratic Party and its national apparatus have statistically defunded more races involving women than men. Are we to believe that …

Teen Suicide: What Women Need to Learn from the Tragedies

Oct 12, 2010 | 24 Comments

The opinions expressed herein are those of the author, and not necessarily those of The New Agenda.
Like the rest of the country, I have been deeply saddened by the death of 18-year-old Tyler Clementi, a first-year college student who took his life September 22 after a roommate used a webcam to broadcast video on the internet of him in a sexual encounter with another man. Not only was the incident a terrible tragedy, but it also cut close to home, happening at my alma mater to a teenager who grew …

Gwyneth Paltrow, Sexual Harassment and the Limits of Privilege

Oct 11, 2010 | 13 Comments

Everyone knows Gwyneth Paltrow as the tall and thin, beautiful and blond Oscar-winning actor born into a wealthy and connected Hollywood family. Her mother, Blythe Danner, is a celebrated actor and her father, Bruce Paltrow, directed famous television shows such as St. Elsewhere and The White Shadow.  I can imagine this stellar lineage helped the talented Paltrow get her foot into the film industry. And yet, I have recently learned that her privileged background could not protect her from being sexually harassed. During an Elle magazine interview Gwyneth recently spoke of her …
