Yesterday marked a new point in US intelligence history. Letitia A. Long was promoted to director of the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA); the first woman to head any US intelligence agency.
At a ceremony at the agency’s new facility site at Fort Belvoir’s North Area in Springfield, Virginia, Long was quoted as saying,
I am excited by the opportunity to continue to serve our nation not only alongside NGA’s outstanding and dedicated professionals but also with our partners and colleagues that span the U.S. Intelligence Community, the international community, academia and industry.
Long holds a Bachelors from Virginia Tech in electrical engineering and a Masters in mechanical engineering from the Catholic University of America. She is leaving her most recent high level post as second in command at the Defense Intelligence Agency.
NGA is a member of the U.S. Intelligence Community and a Department of Defense (DoD) Combat Support Agency. From their website they describe some of the work they do:
The National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA) provides timely, relevant and accurate geospatial intelligence in support of national security objectives. The term “geospatial intelligence” (GEOINT) means the exploitation and analysis of imagery and geospatial information to describe, assess and visually depict physical features and geographically referenced activities on the Earth. Geospatial intelligence consists of imagery, imagery intelligence and geospatial (e.g., mapping, charting and geodesy) information.
Information collected and processed by NGA is tailored for customer-specific solutions. By giving customers ready access to geospatial intelligence, NGA provides support to civilian and military leaders and contributes to the state of readiness of U.S. military forces. NGA also contributes to humanitarian efforts, such as tracking floods and disaster support, and to peacekeeping.
TNA would like to send out a hearty congratulations to Letitia A. Long. We are very excited for her promotion and many other promotions for women to high levels in other intelligence agencies in the very near future!

I am delighted to read this-another milestone for women under our President’s watch…
He just keeps plugging away…despite the landmines thrown in his path, he tip- toes through and keeps making progress…
Great news! I read over at Huffpost:
Women represent 38 percent of total intelligence work force, according to Wendy Morigi, DNI spokeswoman. In six of the most prominent agencies, 27 percent of senior intelligence positions are held by women.
This is much better representation than for women in corp america or gov’t.
Marla – she was promoted not appointed, right? What does this have to do with Obama?
maybe nothing but i’m gonna put a plug in for his administration whenever i see a woman’s name appear in print that’s related to federal govt-he’s related to that and the list of women being appointed, promoted etc impresses me….if no one else is, I am.
