A Product of His Time: Chris Matthews’ Unconscious Bias

Jun 15, 2010 | 25 Comments

The opinions expressed herein are those of the author, and not necessarily those of The New Agenda.
I happen to like Chris Matthews, he reminds me of guys I grew up with on the Southside of Chicago. I picture him as an altar boy and okay, maybe an athlete though my guess is, Chris kept the guys laughing way more than he helped them score. I know enough about him to know he enjoys a long term marriage; my guess, probably to a woman perfectly suited for a guy like Chris …

BBC’s Survivors

Jun 14, 2010 | 2 Comments

The opinions expressed herein are those of the author, and not necessarily those of The New Agenda.
I am a big fan of BBCAmerica, particularly its science fiction. British series are often short like a mini-series. By and large, its sci-fi has been the most positive in its portrayals of women. Other genres are not so positive.
Survivors was a post-apocalyptic British series that started in 2008 but was recently imported to the United States. It is complete. It centers around the aftereffects of a pandemic that …

TNA keeps fighting – more results – more successes…

Jun 13, 2010 | 2 Comments

The New Agenda continues to speak out and get results!
We are helping women in politics!
Recall the run-off in Hawaii for an open congressional seat. The DCCC was set to throw its support behind Ed Case and targeting (including opposition research) a female candidate, State Senator Colleen Hanabusa. The New Agenda’s Amy Siskind wrote an op-ed In Hawaii, DCCC Targets a Woman Candidate in Favor of a White Male. Amy’s op-ed was also picked up by CBS News:
Some female Democratic activists were also angered. Amy Siskind…wrote at …

Hate Crimes Against Women: Enough is Enough!

Jun 12, 2010 | 10 Comments

The opinions expressed herein are those of the author, and not necessarily those of The New Agenda.
How many times must females be killed because they are female, before we start decrying these horrific acts for what they are:  hate crimes?  Although gender is included as a category in the federal hate crimes bill signed into law last year, the recognition that women and girls are targeted and murdered solely because of their sex has yet to infiltrate our cultural framework or spark any sense of collective outrage. The media have …

Inactions have Consequences: Why Feminism is Ripe for a Takeover (and How You Can Help)

Jun 11, 2010 | 20 Comments

The opinions expressed herein are those of the author, and not necessarily those of The New Agenda. This article has been modified and cross-posted.

2006 was supposed to be the year of Democratic women, but it didn’t work out that way. Despite a slew of female candidates hand-picked by Speaker Pelosi, Democrats couldn’t manage to elect them in a year that otherwise saw them sweep power and gain majorities in the House and Senate. The much-lauded Democratic Wave of 2006 ultimately was a wave of men.
Then came 2008, and Hillary …

TNA Stood by Blanche Lincoln. Where Were the Others?

Jun 10, 2010 | 7 Comments

When other groups were turning on Senator Blanche Lincoln, The New Agenda had her back.  The following op-ed, Why I Still Stand With Blanche Lincoln by Amy Siskind, was published at The Huffington Post on March 9, 2010.
Senator Blanche Lincoln finds herself in the political version of a perfect storm. Her home state of Arkansas is centrist. Predictably, Republicans are chastising her vote for Obama’s health care legislation. Progressive organizations, unexpectedly, are throwing millions of dollars behind a male Democrat to …

Geena Davis: How the Media’s Gender Bias Hurts our Children

Jun 10, 2010 | 9 Comments

The opinions expressed herein are those of the author, and not necessarily those of The New Agenda.
I’ve had a sneaking suspicion for some time now that many of the G-rated cartoons and movies that my daughter watches aren’t entirely good for her. Although we enjoyed watching Disney’s Tinkerbell the other night, both my husband and I thought that the popular fairy was entirely too sexualized. I also find Disney Chanel’s Phineas and Ferb funny and clever and yet the show strongly embraces gender stereotypes. Phineas and Ferb are the boy …

CLEAN SWEEP: Hooray for Women in Politics!!!

Jun 9, 2010 | 9 Comments

Last night was a huge night for women in politics.  The New Agenda congratulates all the incredible candidates that will be moving on to November or a runoff later this month.  The New Agenda has featured tonight’s winners from BOTH parties extensively on our blog and in our op-ed writings (you’ll be hearing more about Angle shortly).  What an exciting day for women!
In South Carolina, Nikki Haley soundly beat all three of her opponents in the Republican gubernatorial primary. Since Haley just missed the 50.1% of votes need to …

Does the Media Promote Violence Against Women?

Jun 8, 2010 | 10 Comments

The opinions expressed herein are those of the author, and not necessarily those of The New Agenda.
By this point, the debate upon whether or not television, music, and movies has an impact upon society and personal beliefs is ridiculous. Television, music, and movies have been proven to contain a serious impact. And many organizations regardless of their stances on the spectrum over social issues acknowledge this impact.
GLAAD has its media awards which aim to hold “the media accountable for the words and images they present, and helping grassroots …
