We are helping women in politics!
Recall the run-off in Hawaii for an open congressional seat. The DCCC was set to throw its support behind Ed Case and targeting (including opposition research) a female candidate, State Senator Colleen Hanabusa. The New Agenda’s Amy Siskind wrote an op-ed In Hawaii, DCCC Targets a Woman Candidate in Favor of a White Male. Amy’s op-ed was also picked up by CBS News:
Some female Democratic activists were also angered. Amy Siskind…wrote at the Huffington Post that the DCCC’s actions represented “the latest on a long list of examples of the Democratic Party no longer standing up for, nor representing, women and women’s issues.”
Shortly thereafter, the DCCC decided to stay neutral and not support Case over Hanabusa. And now the good news: Ed Case has stepped away from challenging Hanabusa in a primary when the seat comes up in November 2010, and will instead throw his support behind her.
Run Colleen Hanabusa, run!!!
We are working to battle teen dating violence!
Big news in Florida. This week, Governor Crist signed Teen Dating Violence Education Legislation Into Law (emphasis added):
Representative Mia Jones (D-Jacksonville) worked with the National Foundation for Women Legislators (NFWL) and Moms and Dads for Education (MADE) to ensure that all young people are educated about the devastating consequences of teen dating violence and abuse. On Friday June 4, Governor Crist signed House Bill 467 (Teen Dating Violence Education) into law. As part of their curriculum, student in grades 7-12 will be taught the warning signs of abusive behavior, what healthy relationships are, and who to contact if they or someone they know is an abuse victim.
The New Agenda is a national partner of Moms and Dads for Education to Stop Teen Dating Abuse (MADE).
We are protecting our girls!
Together we made calls and sent emails – our collective efforts worked. Last month, the American Association of Pediatrics reversed its decision on female circumcision.
