Are Little Boys Blue?

May 14, 2010 | 2 Comments

The opinions expressed herein are those of the author, and not necessarily those of The New Agenda.
The other day I was in a toyshop with my three year old daughter and I overheard a father scolding his son, “Jonathan! Don’t play with those toys, those are girl’s toys!”
And so much did Jonathan want to play with the baby dolls, miniature strollers, toy vacuum cleaners and kitchenette sets that Jonathan’s father had to repeat his condemnation several times.
“What did I say, Jonathan? Those are girl’s …

Elena Kagan & The Obama Effect

May 13, 2010 | 16 Comments

The opinions expressed herein are those of the author, and not necessarily those of The New Agenda. This article has been cross-posted.

I haven’t been able to get too worked up about much politically these days. It’s all going so fast, tumbling end over end over end, and half of it is just a bunch of noise. I’m tired of not knowing who to trust, and of entertaining that sneaking suspicion that no one who will do anything helpful is in a position to do so. …

The slippery slope created by pageant organizers

May 12, 2010 | 5 Comments

The opinions expressed herein are those of the author, and not necessarily those of The New Agenda.

Yesterday I was reading the online news and came across a piece about how the current Miss USA pageant contestants were photographed in suggestive poses wearing lingerie.  So this is the new direction for the Miss USA franchise?  Whose brilliant idea was this?  President Paula Shugart?
Is this idea supposed to boost the brand like a push-up?  I mean come on people if a televised scholarship contest starts to lose ground and lose viewers then …

Kagan Sexism Watch!

May 12, 2010 | 9 Comments

The New Agenda commends President Obama for his nomination of Elena Kagan for the Supreme Court seat vacated by Justice Stephens.
If Kagan is confirmed, our country will be taking an important step towards parity – with 3 of 9 – or 33% of the Supreme Court composed of women.  Dramatically higher than our legislative branch (corrected) where only 17% of our federal elected officials are women!
After witnessing the questions of intellect, temperament and other sexist slurs thrown at Justice Sotomayor after her nomination, we must all be vigilant and prepared!
We …

Nations United Against Women

May 11, 2010 | 5 Comments

The opinions expressed herein are those of the author, and not necessarily those of The New Agenda.
Nations United Against Women.
So… Iran was elected to the UN’s commission on the status of women. Some women are really upset over this. Well, I have not heard much from the major feminist organizations such as NOW. I have not heard much outrage from the Democratic party. Kirsten Gillibrand has spoken against this, but no condemnation from either Barack or Michelle Obama, nothing from Valerie Jarrett? Who is speaking …

We Did it!!! DCCC Pulls Out of Hawaii Special Election!

May 10, 2010 | No Comment

We did it!
The New Agenda spoke out when the DCCC backed a white male candidate in the Hawaii Special Election over State Senator Colleen Hanabusa.  The New Agenda’s Amy Siskind wrote over at The Huffington Post:
In Hawaii’s special-election scheduled for May 22, the DCCC is actively trying to defeat a Democratic woman state senator running for an open congressional seat — State Senator Colleen Hanabusa.
It’s a fact that only 16.8% of our congressional seats are held by women — an abysmal figure to begin with. And there is a significant …

Honoring the Memory of Yeardley Love

May 7, 2010 | 10 Comments

The opinions expressed herein are those of the author, and not necessarily those of The New Agenda.
At this writing, over 46,000 people have ‘liked” the Facebook memorial page for 22-year-old Yeardley Love, killed by her former boyfriend and fellow University of Virginia student George Huguely. The messages are heartfelt and comforting– part of an all too familiar ritual of collective grief for a life cut short. The condolences are, in their own way, meaningful and important. But, we do the memory of this young woman — and hundreds of others …

Happy Anniversary to the Iron Lady!

May 7, 2010 | No Comment

The opinions expressed herein are those of the author, and not necessarily those of The New Agenda.
This week marked the 31st anniversary of Britain’s appointment of its first female prime minister.
Margaret Thatcher, oft-heralded for promoting vast privatization, busting nation-breaking trade unions, and assisting the Soviet Union’s beneficial post-Cold War reform, went on to serve an unprecedented three terms.
Happy anniversary Maggie!

“Kittenish and Kind”
Of course, she had favourites – Cecil Parkinson, John Moore, John Major – and she could use her femininity to get her own way. She could be kittenish, especially with leaders. …
