WE DID IT!!! AAP Reverses Decision on Female Circumcision

May 31, 2010 | 3 Comments

The following email was sent to The New Agenda’s email alert group.  If you would like to be part of our email alert group, sign up here .
Dear Friends,

We did it!!!
Our collective efforts worked!  We emailed and called the AAP and our female leaders.  And, yes, our voices were heard!
In a major reversal:

The policy statement ignited a storm of criticism from opponents of female genital cutting. Dr. Judith S. Palfrey, president of the academy, said: “We’re saying don’t do it. Do …

Memorial Tribute to Massachusetts Women

May 31, 2010 | One Comment

Happy Memorial Day!
In honor of this important day for our country, I wanted to share some photos and fun facts about three important women featured at The Boston Women Memorial in Boston which I visited over the weekend.
The statues would certainly bring a smile to the face of my friend Dr. Lynette Long who started a group called EVE to help increase the visibility of women.  And, Anna Belle should definitely schedule this into her upcoming Northeast tour which you’ll be hearing a lot more about shortly on our blog.
The …

Should We Be Having This Conversation? Sex and the City and Islamic Misogyny

May 30, 2010 | 7 Comments

The opinions expressed herein are those of the author, and not necessarily those of The New Agenda.
Even before it’s opening date, the new Sex in the City movie is receiving some flack for setting part of the movie in Dubai and for having the chutzpah to recognize the oppression of women in this country.
Is Sex and the City 2 culturally insensitive? Xenophobic? Bigoted?
One reviewer seems to think so. Stephen Farber of The Hollywood Reporter accuses the film of going controversial by presenting a “scathing portrayal of Muslim society.” Forbert claims:
“SATC …

The Single Ladies Dance Outrage & the Crisis of Girls’ Sexualization

May 29, 2010 | 7 Comments

This piece is cross-posted with permission of Rachel Simmons’ blog (see bio below).  The opinions expressed herein and those of Rachel Simmons, and not necessarily those of The New Agenda.
The recent spectacle of eight and nine year old girls gyrating to “Single Ladies” is still eating me. And to be honest, I’m still not exactly sure why.
What’s the big deal here, really? Isn’t this just another grating example of girls’ sexualization, fodder that seems to arrive weekly? And who cares if some little girls want to …

Is McGinnis a bully and a Peeping Tom harassing Sarah Palin?

May 28, 2010 | 23 Comments

The opinions expressed herein are those of the author, and not necessarily those of The New Agenda.
The “journalist” McGinnis is renting the house next door to Sarah Palin’s home because he is writing a book about her. She is so “uninteresting” that she deserves all this attention. But he cannot submit to conventional and even unconventional “acceptable” methods for his research. He is doing it this way because she is a woman, and because not only does he have society’s consent, but a cheering crowd.

WE DID IT! Activism Works! AAP Reverses Decision on Female Circumcision

May 27, 2010 | 3 Comments

Thank you to all of our members who took the time to call the AAP and the women in Congress and the Senate.
The New York Times reports:
The American Academy of Pediatrics has reversed its decision last month regarding the practice of female circumcision by immigrants from some African, Middle Eastern and Asian cultures. The academy had suggested in a policy statement that doctors be given permission to perform a ceremonial pinprick or nick on girls if it would keep their families from sending them overseas for the full circumcision. Although …

It’s Time for Peace in the “Feminist” Civil War

May 27, 2010 | 17 Comments

The latest chatter among moms of teenage girls in my community is Formspring – yet another cyberbullying social media website which gives girls a chance to express breathtaking cruelty towards one another.
Geez, the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.
Ever since Sarah Palin dared to utter the words emerging, conservative, feminist identity two weeks ago, it’s been an all out civil war among women.  As we’ve covered on our blog, conservative woman have proudly found their own version of feminism; and the left, who excluded conservative women all along, will …

Cookie Cutter Feminists

May 26, 2010 | 13 Comments

The opinions expressed herein are those of the author, and not necessarily those of The New Agenda.
Feminist
n.
(Government, Politics & Diplomacy) a person who advocates equal rights for women.
Above is the Free Dictionary’s definition of a feminist.  However, as simple as this premise may be, advocating for the equal rights of women, there are many who complicate this term and even strive to make it that only “certain” individuals can use it to define themselves.
I read an interesting article on how just uttering Gov. Sarah Palin’s name in a positive …

The New York Times is reporting that the American Association of Pediatrics (“AAP”) condones genital circumcision on our shores.  Yes, that’s right!  A dangerous step towards tolerating genital cutting in the United States of America!
Not on our watch!  Not without a fight!
