TNA in CBS News Politics…

Apr 12, 2010 | No Comment

Today, The New Agenda’s Amy Siskind is quoted in a CBS News article Could Obama’s Hometown Hawaii District Go GOP? as the women’s advocacy point of view:
Some female Democratic activists were also angered. Amy Siskind, president of The New Agenda, an organization dedicated to improving the lives of women and girls, wrote at the Huffington Post that the DCCC’s actions represented “the latest on a long list of examples of the Democratic Party no longer standing up for, nor representing, women and women’s issues.”
Asian American groups are also upset …

Girl Scouts: A Study of Entrepreneurship

Apr 12, 2010 | 6 Comments

The opinions expressed herein are those of the author, and not necessarily those of The New Agenda.
Girl Scout cookies, arguably the most delicious American delight, represent an equally delightful history of feminism.
Just a few years after the Girl Scouts tradition launched, troops began selling cookies to finance their endeavor. In 1922 the official Scouts magazine, The American Girl, published a recipe. Girls baked their own wares, and sales followed the girls who baked the best cookies.

During the butter and sugar rationing that came with World War II, …

GOP Woman Candidate Looking to Overthrow Reid

Apr 11, 2010 | 3 Comments

Sue Lowden, former Nevada GOP chair, is gaining momentum as she looks to unseat Senator Harry Reid this November. But first, she must win the Republican primary.
Politics Daily reporting:
In the Republican race, Lowden leads businessman and former college basketball star Danny Tarkanian by 45 percent to 27. Three other candidates poll 5 percent or less each and 16 percent are undecided. The margin of error is 6 points.
For the general election, Lowden leads Reid 46 percent to 38 percent with 5 percent for would-be Tea Party candidate Scott Ashjian, …

Taking Swipes at Women for PMS: Not Funny!

Apr 11, 2010 | 16 Comments

The opinions expressed herein are those of the author, and not necessarily those of The New Agenda.
In my speech class, we were meant to give fake crisis speeches which can be serious or silly. One student – a woman – did a speech over what she called “Mad Cow Disease,” which in this case is women going through PMS. Everyone in the class thought it was incredibly funny except me. I tried pointing this out, and the speechgiver kept saying “Yes, women are hormonal, emotional, and can’t …

Sarah Palin “Leading the Stampede” of Women

Apr 10, 2010 | 20 Comments

The opinions expressed herein are those of the author, and not necessarily those of The New Agenda.
How befitting is it that just days ago, Amy Siskind called on Palin to embrace her gender. This week, she’s begun to capitalize on women’s outrage, and with that she may be painting that once red elephant, pink, all the way to 2012.
Some people wouldn’t put a conservative like Sarah Palin under the traditional feminist category. Then again, is there such a thing as a traditional feminist? Leave it …

Women’s Campaign Forum Joins TNA in Standing Up for Senator Hanabusa

Apr 9, 2010 | No Comment

Over at HuffPost, Sam Bennett, President/CEO of Women’s Campaign Forum joined Amy Siskind in calling out the Democratic Party for abandoning their base of women.
Bennett writes:
Both Brunner and Hanabusa are qualified, well-liked candidates who hold statewide leadership positions. The voters have already signaled their support in the polls – so why are the boys at the top holding back? Why do national committees continue to tilt the playing field in favor of male candidates, without clear justification?
And this certainly isn’t just a Democratic issue: Let us not forget how the …

UPDATED: In Hawaii, DCCC Targets a Woman Candidate (She’s a Democrat!)

Apr 9, 2010 | 12 Comments

This updated version is featured today at The Huffington Post. The original version is posted at NewsReal.  Local media, The Honolulu Advisor has also picked up on The New Agenda speaking out.

File this one under the latest on a long list of examples of the Democratic Party no longer standing up for, nor representing, women and women’s issues.
In Hawaii’s special-election scheduled for May 22, the DCCC is actively trying to defeat a Democratic woman state senator running for an open congressional seat – State Senator Colleen Hanabusa!
It’s fact that …

Ursula Burns: A Woman for the Herstory Books

Apr 9, 2010 | 3 Comments

The opinions expressed herein are those of the author, and not necessarily those of The New Agenda.
Born in 1958, Ursula Burns grew up in Manhattan to a single-parent household. Her mother ironed clothes and ran a daycare to pay the bills and for her children to attend a private Catholic school. Excelling in mathematics, she later went to the Polytechnic Institute of New York and received a well-deserved degree in engineering. After college, she moved to grad school and earned her Master’s from Columbia University.
She began her …

Brooksley Born gets Payback!

Apr 8, 2010 | 4 Comments

Not to be missed….
Back in December 2008, I wrote an article for the Daily Beast called Women Scorned. The article was about women who speak out about problems on Wall Street and are then silenced by their male counterparts/bosses. One woman that I featured was Brooksley Born:
The implosion of the derivatives market and the subsequent collapse of many of our prominent financial institutions could have been averted. Back in 1998, there was a clear and unequivocal warning. A woman by the name of Brooksley Born, then chairwoman of …
