ACTION ALERT: American Apparel is selling out girls (we’re not buying)!

Feb 11, 2010 | 19 Comments

Join our friends at Hardy Girls Healthy Women as they speak out against the sexualization of girls.  Take action and sign their petition.  The opinions expressed herein are those of the author, and not necessarily those of The New Agenda.
American Apparel has such a history of sexist ad campaigns that we’ve often wondered if their marketing team is made up of teenage boys lacking creativity and common sense. But their latest endeavor takes the cake. American Apparel is looking for the best bottom in the …

Senator Liz Krueger Speaks Out on Monserrate

Feb 10, 2010 | One Comment

We wanted to share a statement just released by NYS Senator Liz Krueger.
Senator Krueger was a guest on The New Agenda’s blogtalkradio show, Chewing the Fat With Ophelia, last spring. On that show, which you can listen to here, Senator Krueger told listeners that the best way to reduce violence against women would be to elect more women leaders. Amen to that!
Here’s Senator Krueger’s statement just issued on Monserrate:

Voting to expel a member of the New York State Senate is not a decision to be taken lightly, but …

How They Voted: Monserrate

Feb 9, 2010 | 8 Comments

The vote to expel went down 53-8.
For the record, all 10 women in the NYS Senate voted “yes” to expel, including 8 Democrats and 2 Republicans.  Word is that this block of 8 women Dems were a powerful voice in demanding that the “expel” not “censure” resolution be brought to the floor.
Among the “nay” votes for expulsion were:
Eric Adams, Ruben Diaz Sr., Martin Malave Dilan, Carl Kruger, Pedro Espada Jr., Kevin Parker, John Sampson, and Monserrate himself.
Sen John Sampson is the Democratic Conference Leader. You can contact him here.

MONSERRATE EXPELLED!!!

Feb 9, 2010 | 16 Comments

We did it!
Tonight, in a victory for women everywhere, the New York State Senate voted to expel Sen Hiram Monserrate.
Monserrate’s expulsion sends a powerful message:  violence against women is NOT acceptable!  And we will no longer be silent!
It wasn’t easy.  If not for women in the senate and women’s organizations banding together, Monserrate would have gotten away with a slap on the wrist.
No more!  Never again!  Not on our watch!
The New Agenda would like to thank our coalition partners, Marcia Pappas of NOW-NYS, …

MORE Breaks the Left’s Ice on Palin

Feb 9, 2010 | 27 Comments

There’s an old Chinese proverb: A journey of a thousand miles begins with one small step. That has been our work here at The New Agenda – one small step at a time towards unity for women.
And so I was delighted yesterday to see an article over at MORE which gives reasons to like Sarah Palin.  All the more so because it is a piece written by Judith Coyne, Exective Editor of MORE and like myself, a lifelong Democrat.  Unlike myself, Judith pulled the lever for Obama.
You can read Judith’s …

Kay Bailey Hutchinson vs Rick Perry – Who’s Best for Texas?

Feb 8, 2010 | 14 Comments

The opinions expressed herein are those of the author, and not necessarily those of The New Agenda.
In an earlier post, Hughes explained perfectly well why Kay Bailey Hutchison is the perfect pro-woman candidate who will work for benefit of all women. Kay Bailey Hutchinson understands the importance of bi-partisanship. Women’s rights should never be a partisan issue. Now, I want to explain why Kay Bailey Hutchison is the perfect pro-Texan candidate who will work for the benefit of all Texans and why Rick Perry is anti-Texan.
Few citizens …

ACTION ALERT: “EXPEL MONSERRATE!”

Feb 8, 2010 | 2 Comments

The following action alert has been sent to out via email.  If you would like to receive our email alerts, sign up here.
We’re at the finish line:
This week the NYS Senate will decide the fate of Senator Hiram Monserrate, the senator convicted of a misdemeanor assault charge for slashing his girlfriend’s face (more info here).
The bi-partisan NYS Select Committee gave the Senate 2 options: “censure” or “expel.”Democratic Conference Leader, Senator John Sampson (D) is considering bringing a resolution to censure, not expel Monserrate.
It seems that Sen Sampson …

Open Thread: No Wonder Our Country’s a Mess

Feb 7, 2010 | 2 Comments

No wonder our country is in such a mess! Where are the women?
For all those of you who comment that Coakley isn’t good enough because….or Hutchinson isn’t good enough because….or Palin isn’t good enough because…..well, what woman is good enough???
And look at the awful mess our country is in being run by a meeting after meeting of ALL or mostly all men!

The NY Times’ Palin Bias

Feb 7, 2010 | 16 Comments

There was a seemingly positive article in The New York Times on Friday called Palin, Visible and Vocal, Is Positioned for Variety of Roles. As I read the first part of the article, I thought, hmm, maybe the NYT can come around to finally giving some balanced coverage to one of the most visible female politicians of our time.
There article starts off innocently enough, making the point that most of us have realized:  That Sarah Palin has a huge national following – and numerous prospects for her future in …

A First Is On the Way: Angela McGlowan

Feb 6, 2010 | 22 Comments

Ladies! Keep your ears open for an exciting announcement on Monday. A woman will be announcing her candidacy for Congress. Her victory will be historic as she will become the first woman to serve Mississippi in Congress. That’s right. Mississippi has NEVER sent a woman to the House of Representatives OR the Senate. She would be the first! This opportunity for history comes in the form of a Tea Partier, Republican, African American woman, Angela McGlowan.
Friday, she was the first speaker at the first National Tea Party convention. There’s …
