KayBaileyHutchisonIf you are like me, you may be still feeling frustrated with the Coakley non-election and wondering why voters seem to have a problem electing totally qualified women. You may even feel that itch to do something about it, take some ACTION! For those that share that feeling, there is something you can do right now and, in fact, time is of the essence.

Kay Bailey Hutchison, the most senior female Republican senator, is running for governor of Texas. The Republican primary is March 2nd. That is just a month away! She’s running against the Republican incumbent governor, Rick Perry. Despite her vast experience and qualifications, as well as some hefty endorsements, polls show Perry with a double digit lead. But I think national involvement by women can have an impact on this race. Look at polls in Massachusetts Dec 19 versus Jan 19. Talk about impacts and national involvement! Women can be on the winning side of impacts too. And we can’t let another qualified woman go down.

Why should you care about a woman running for governor in Texas? Well, for those who still harbor a fantasy of having a woman in the White House one day, Texas is an electoral-vote-rich state. That seems a bit irrelevant now but it is still worth considering. After all, many Vice Presidents and Presidents come straight from governor’s mansions. But more importantly, Kay Bailey Hutchison is a strong female candidate with a lifetime of experience and public service. Our country needs this kind of female candidate running in races in all parties and in all states. If the likes of Kay Bailey Hutchison, Martha Coakley and Hillary Clinton keep losing races, women will be less and less likely to run. If women don’t run, women cannot get elected, and we will never have our voice adequately represented in government. And our country will continue to suffer the negative consequences of having only half of its population involved in developing solutions.

“She’s a Republican! I cannot vote for a Republican! She voted against this. She voted against that. I can’t support a candidate just because she’s a woman.” Okay, okay. Get it all out…

Now, throw out the negativity. It is time to think about positive, good things! Can do, take action kinds of things! Here’s something, an exercise of sorts: Do a little research, do a little thinking and see how many reasons you can come up with to support Kay Bailey Hutchison. You know they’re out there! Write them down. In fact, come back and share them with us and post a comment.

I did the exercise and I found some good stuff! She certainly meets my pro-woman criteria for support.

Kay Bailey Hutchison:

Is the first woman to represent Texas in the U.S. Senate.

Voted in favor of the Anti-Rape Amendment to the Defense Appropriations bill that protects the rights of rape victims who work for federal contractors overseas.

Voted in favor of the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act proving to many women the important of having women from all parties representing us in Congress.

Joined forces with Hillary Clinton honoring Women’s History Month at an event where the two women “spoke to each other like close sisters” while they “offered life lessons to young women and discussed their own successes, defeats and frailties.”

Worked with Senator Hillary Clinton to write provisions into the No Child Left Behind Act authorizing single-sex education in public schools.

As U.S. Representative, worked with Sarah Weddington (the attorney who won the Roe v. Wade case), to protect rape victims from having their names published.

Was named one of “The 30 most powerful women in America” by Ladies Home Journal in 2001.

Was the first female TV newswoman in Texas (“The Eyes of Texas”).

Considers herself pro-choice, supports the legality of abortion and believes that the decision of the United States Supreme Court in Roe v. Wade was appropriate and should not be overturned.

Wrote a book honoring American women trailblazers, American Heroines: The Spirited Women Who Shaped Our Country.

As long as there has been an America, the indomitable spirit of American women has shaped both the country’s history and society. Regardless of the time and place these women were born each excelled in her respective field, making it easier for the next generation. This is what makes them heroines. … As a young girl, Senator Hutchison dreamed of an America where the qualifier “the first woman” had become obsolete. The profiles contained in American Heroines, illustrate how her dream is coming true, one courageous step at a time.

Coauthored with her Senate colleagues coauthored Nine and Counting: The Women of the Senate.

The Women of the United States Senate have forever changed the political landscape. Their backgrounds, personal styles, and political ideals may be as diverse as the nation they serve. Yet they share a commonality that runs deeper than politics or geography — they desire to give a voice to all their constituents while serving as role models for women young and old.

Here’s what Kay has to say about women in government:

Women have a collaborative style of management and working. And it’s not that we agree on everything, because I think our voting records would be really very opposite, but we look for the places where we have agreement and we build on that. And I think we’ve been able to be effective where we have had those types of opportunities. So I think the more women we can have in our – especially in our legislative bodies, because in the legislature it’s so important that you have all the different experiences coming together, because then you will come out with an answer that is going to take into account the most of the people and the concerns that they have in this country.

clintonhutchisonI like it!

Only one month left. Make it happen!

“If women want any rights more than they’s got, why don’t they just take them, and not be talking about it.” – Sojourner Truth

Vote women.

I live in Texas, am not a republican, but became an independent after the dem primary. I intend to vote for Kaye because Perry is a major, class A-1 jerk and should be voted out before he can do more damage to Texas.

There are rumors that he should run for president. Pray that idea never comes to fruition because Perry is more of the same that TNA and other women’s groups are striving to change. Let’s change Texas for the better and vote for Kaye!

I was devastated to learn about Kay’s voting record because I was itching to vote for her. BUT, she has voted for more pork than almost any politician and she told Texas voters she would NOT vote for the stimulus plan giveaway to bankers and the day after making that promise she voted FOR it. Even though I really like her anti-Obama administration stance, and I like that she is a strong woman, I cannot vote for someone who spends OUR money like it is water.

I emailed her campaign to ask her why she has been, through commercials, chastising Rick Perry for not protecting tax payers when she is a Spendaholic and I have yet to hear back from her.

Texas is a strong state and we have been nearly immune from the crushing recession facing the nation. Perry may not be my first choice, but he has done well by Texas thus far.

Kay Bailey Hutchison should have not given our money away if she wanted my vote :(

Also, Sarah Palin is going to support Rick Perry for exactly this reason so I will be voting with the woman…in a way!

    jenniferintexas,

Perry proposed the Trans Texas Corridor (“TTC”) connecting highways from Canada through the U.S. to Mexico. A land grab from Texas farmers and ranchers. It was the beginning of the North American Union, which would have taken away sovereignty from these three countries. In January 2009, due to major public protests, the TTC died; but did it really?

Perry is also positioning himself to run for president in 2012 and even attended this year’s Bilderburg meeting, where it has been reported that all potential presidential candidates must go in order to get the blessing of the power elite. I don’t want Perry anywhere near the WH!

Whatever beef you may have against Hutchinson, I believe Perry is much worse, primarily because of his willingness to blatantly try to take Texans’ land from them as part of his plan in building the TTC.

Halane, you found very strong pros for Hutchinson. there is no doubt I would vote for her were I in Texas.
But all these pro women stances, supportive actions seems to mean nothing to the one vote pundits will throw out. i remember the stimulus discussion and it was a difficult issue then. of course from the viewpoint of february 2010 we know that it did not help the economy. I see this vote being brought up in the same light as Hillary’s “pro war” vote. I am sure senator Hutchinson will be fiscally conservative as governor of Texas.

Now you get a pub and you say no. I don’t get you at all. I guess that is not my place to understand what woman would fit your profile of adequacy. Nothing against Gov. Palin, but Hillary asked us to vote for a man too and we turned her down if you remember.

When Fiorina and Boxer run against each other will you vote for the independent male just because? Sure seems that way.

The last election in Texas was a four-way race. 64% of the voters went against Perry. Palin’s endorsement of Perry doesn’t mean anything to me. The majority of conservatives who like Perry haven’t lived in Texas and don’t know him that well. To me, Perry is Obama-lite.

    February 3, 2010 at 9:26 am
  • jenniferintexas said:

Perry may be Obama-lite, but Hutchinson is Obama-HEAVY because she lied to us about what I consider to be the most important issue facing Texas and America today–TOO MUCH DEBT!!! And as far as believing that Hutchinson would ‘change’ her spending ways if we vote for her reminds me of all those people who told me not to look at Obama’s horrible track record of lying and cheating but rather to his promises–well look at what that got them. Past behavior is the best indicator of future behavior and we cannot afford her spending in Texas.

Just like Coakley, Hutchinson doesn’t know how to win. The ONE issue voters care about is the ECONOMY stupid, and her spending money like it is water and lying to us (it is on tape people) regarding her vote on the stimulus to bankers deal will make her unelectable in this post-Obama-as-messiah world we live in today. All she had to do was keep her word and do right by voters, and if my standard of doing just that to earn my vote is too high for women will gosh darn women better start doing better. Having Bush endorse her was just the last nail in the coffin……

At the very least, she should be owning up to the lie, apologizing for the spending, and re-defining herself and her spending pattern. Instead, she is attacking Perry for not representing Texas well, and that is just not going to fly considering how well we are doing in Texas as compared to other states.

And I would beg to differ on the Palin endorsement, because from my perspective it has to do with spending. Texas has a balanced budget and that is what this country needs. Perry will win because of it.

    JenniferinTexas,

The politically expedient Rick Perry likes to play the trendy anti-Washington card calling Kay part of the “Washington Problem”. Yet he collected almost TWICE as much money from Beltway lobbyists than Kay. Most of Rick Perry’s support has come from lobbyists and interest groups with business before the state. Shady anyone?

TX was not immune from the recession and was in fact was affected deeply with declining revenues across the board. The reason TX did as well as it did this past year is solely because of federal money secured by Kay. TX rec’d $31 billion in federal income and the government added 88,200 jobs which in turn generated economy. You absolutely do not have Perry to thank for this.

Perry has been the governor of TX for 9 years during which time he DOUBLED the state budget and currently presides over a deficit upwards to 10 billion. This is NOT the work of a fiscal conservative.

For Republicans, the decision on March 2nd is a no brainer. With Perry, you know what you get. If you like billions in deficit and want to go for tripling the state budget, Perry’s your man. If you want a real fiscal conservative, the obvious answer is Kay.

I expect a teaparty candidate with big truck will show up some time and get the anti establishment vote. female candidates are invisible until they have impressive track records aka belong to the establisment. it is a catch.

    Halane,

I guess we will just agree to disagree because those federal funds were NOT wanted and NOT needed but rather forced upon Texas.

We have one of the biggest ports in the country and real estate did not explode so it did not implode. Americans are FLOCKING to Texas because of jobs, low cost of living, and opportunity.

I did not state Perry was a fiscal conservative, but I did state that Mrs. Hutchison has — in the last decade — voted for 93% of the spending bills INCLUDING the banker buy out which contradicted her promise to us the day before that she wouldn’t.

Unfortunately, neither of them are peaches, but Perry will get my vote because he is the lesser of two evils. And it is darn hard for me to forgot that big whopping lie of Kay’s. Never will actually…..

She gave my money to the bankers, so I am giving my vote to Perry.

Talk about the lie Halane….it matters. If I can’t trust you today, I can’t trust you tomorrow…..

Although I have not always agreed with every position stated in the New Agenda blog, I have followed it with complete admiration. The first time I saw it, I said to myself “wow, a feminist place that talks about THE ISSUES and welcomes men”. It was so refreshing to see a blog that supported women without falling into petty disagreements about what her positions were on matters of things like policy, or some other male construct.

Jenniferintexas for a long time seemed to be leading the way to a view of the future that we could all support: WOMEN FIRST. Her latest comments make me despair. She–of all people!–has recently supported man after man, regardless that there are competent women who could lead the way on ISSUES that we agree about regardless of differences in policy. I feel real despair that if someone as insightful and analytical as jenniferintexas could support Perry over Hutchinson all I can say is there hope left for the vision of the New Agenda and if not is there any hope at all.

    Brian and Amy,

I am one million percent behind getting more women in office, but they have to be the better candidate. If not, we would be guilty of what black people did when they voted for Mr. Obama only because he was black….and look at where that has gotten us.

I was actually devastated to learn about Kay Bailey Hutchison’s voting record, and I felt that I had allowed myself to remain uniformed because I based my respect for her on what I knew of her and what I heard her say. She is a very confident, strong, positive person and I would have LOVED to cast my vote for her. But I heard a Perry ad about her lie regarding the bank buy-out and when I went and looked it up to make sure he was telling the truth I also did some research on her voting record and that is when I realized that she may quack like a duck but she can’t fly. She spends money like water and voted for PORK, PORK, and more PORK. She voted for bad programs, the bridge to nowhere in Alaska, and 1000′s of other non-necessary spending that has driven America to the brink of disaster. Oh, and she lied about NOT voting for the stimulus money give-away to the fat cat bankers. She made it impossible for me to vote for her, and I am actually pretty pissed off about it because if you think I want to vote for Rick Perry than you don’t know me at all.

I think that GOOD women in positions of power would change the world, but putting women who are not honest, not competent, or not as good as the other candidate up there makes no sense. For example, when the truth comes out about the caucus fraud voting and the delegate buy off AND when Mr. Obama is voted out in 2012, he will go down in history as the worst president ever. Do you actually think he will have helped race relations or pushed black Americans up the ladder, or do you think that his sub-standard performance, failure to keep one promise, and inability to make one single good decision will actually hurt race relations? I think the latter is what will happen and the last thing women need is to go backwards.

Electing, promoting, and supporting GOOD women is what I thought TNA was going to do, and I am one million percent behind this. I also think that good people can disagree on who is the better candidate. As I stated above, I think Kay should own her lie and her past spending, apologize, and go forward but this is just my humble opinion. I might be able to vote for her if she did this, but at this point she is just the pot calling the kettle black.

Finally, I commend TNA and other groups for getting out there and pushing women up. Just because I disagree sometimes with individual choices should not diminish the respect I have for this process and every woman and man behind it.

    jenniferintexas,

Here are some of the political shennanigans Perry uses in flaunting the will of the people, which are the primary reason I believe he is not good for Texas and should not be given another term as Governor:

Perry Vetoed 49 bills passed in the 2007 legislative session, after the legislature went home, so he could not be overridden. Mr. Veto would probably argue that he restrained himself from the record he set in 2001, when he vetoed 82 bills, more than any governor in any single legislative session in Texas history since reconstruction. According to Paul Burka of the Texas Monthly, 17 of this year’s Perry vetoes were simply to get back at legislators who crossed him on his precious mega-special interest driven Trans-Texas Corridor and HPV vaccine mandate.

In 2003, Perry and Mike Krusee (R-Round Rock) snookered their legislative colleagues by pushing through legislation for the Trans-Texas Corridor and freeway-to-tollway conversions, that few understood. The Governor, Krusee, Texas Transportation Commissioner, Ric Williamson, and a few others continue to force what the public simply will not accept. And a revolving door in Austin goes round and round. Our favorite example is Dan Shelley, a high powered lobbyist for CINTRA (the Spanish toll road consortium), who wound up working in the Governor’s office writing transportation legislation.

Vetoing the first Corridor/Toll moratorium bill (HB 1892), then deforming the second moratorium bill (SB 792) taking from ordinary Texans a clear, unadulterated shot at a 30 month moratorium on the Governor’s universally hated plan to build the massive Trans-Texas Corridor and his freeway-to-tollway privatization boondoggles. (Don’t worry, folks — this fight is far from over, as Texans are gearing up to give the Governor the political hell-on-earth he so deserves to put a stop to this.)

Vetoing eminent domain reform designed to protect private property rights and to stop the taking of over 1 million acres of prime farm and ranchland — for the Trans-Texas Corridor — the largest land seizure in United States history.

Calling three special sessions on mid-census redistricting, disenfranchising not only Democratic voters, but the state’s growing numbers of independent voters whose voting power is diminished when “swing” districts are eliminated. The redistricting violated the Voting Rights Act, campaign finance laws and necessitated huge expenditures of taxpayer dollars in endless lawsuits and legal maneuvers. (In the end, what did we get — the downfall of DeLay, the revolt against Speaker Craddick — still underway, and the people’s movement for Perry’s impeachment! But scoundrels never learn.)

Perry’s small business franchise tax, which has increased taxes for many small businesses by a ten-fold average! (This is no joke, folks — straight from the National Federation of Independent Businesses.)

Vetoing no less than 2 bills and one appropriations rider to help the beleaguered Community College System, including $150 million health insurance for the community college employees, while admonishing the colleges to “follow state law”. Why doesn’t the Governor do the same thing by curbing his veto fetish?

Unbelievably vetoing a bill banning diesel-fueled school buses idling to curb bus emissions exposing children to fine particles that can trigger asthma attacks. This bill had widespread support, no voiced opposition (including the Governor’s office) and was drawn upon an initiative by the President!

Selling out consumer protection for homeowners by stacking the Texas Residential Construction Commission with appointees from the construction industry. For example, Perry took $690,000 from homebuilder Bob Perry (Perry Homes — no relation) and appointed Perry Homes attorney, John Krush to the Commission. Former Comptroller Carole Strayhorn thought it was such a joke that she called for the abolition of the commission and welcomed a legal challenge by the Attorney General.

Mandating Texas girls be vaccinated against the HPV virus, before entering the 6th grade (to which the legislature gave the full Nelson, pinning Perry to the mat, undoing this Merck Pharmaceuticals special interest driven deed!) It turned out that Perry had received campaign money from Merck, as did much of the legislature, and his former chief of staff, Mike Toomey, is a lobbyist for Merck.

A series of vetoes put the Perry poison pen to bipartisan criminal justice reform that would slow the pace of incarceration and provide for alternative funding mechanisms. Meanwhile prison guards remain some of the worst paid workers in the state and, as a result, the state prisons are dangerously under guarded. (In fact, we hear the Governor thinks prison guards should be paid minimum wage for the privilege of putting their lives on the line every day.)

You’ve told us why you won’t vote for Kay, so, please tell us exactly what Perry has done for Texas that makes him a better candidate than Kay?

Lesser of two evils. Debt is killing country and she lied about the banker bail out. So, she outspent Perry and I trust her least. Which isn’t saying much but the two MAIN problems in Washington is dishonesty and spending money we don’t have on things we don’t need….

Country is at the edge of the cliff and only careful and cautious spending and MUCH hard work will save her. Give away programs with money we don’t have would be the LAST thing we should do. And what amazes me is that Kay chastised the HELL out of Mr. Obama and the Democrats for spending money we don’t have, spending money on things we don’t need, and keeping his word. I dislike greatly her doing the same thing.

    February 4, 2010 at 6:23 pm
  • Kathleen Wynne said:

    jenniferintexas,

All that glitters is not gold and Perry is a prime example of that. If you are concerned about debt in Texas, Perry uses political trickery to give the illusion that he is protecting Texas from debt, when, in fact, he is not!

Here’s an article that gives an excellent example of how Perry uses political smoke and mirrors to fool people into believing he is fiscally responsible and “can be trusted” with our money. It says, in part:

“Under the direction of Tom Pauken, a former Texas GOP chairman hand-picked by Rick Perry to head the agency, the TWC has served the Governor’s political agenda while burdening Texas taxpayers and businesses with debt. When Rick Perry refused half a billion dollars in federal unemployment insurance funds, the TWC covered his political tracks by taking on a massive federal loan to keep the state unemployment fund solvent, as required by law. But the fallout from this Republican-ruled state agency doesn’t end there – and will continue to burden Texas taxpayers and businesses for years to come.”

    http://www.txdemocrats.org/200.....-benefits/

Based on this article, it seems you are research Perry’s record and are going out of your way to find fault with Hutchinson. It’s becoming evident that the reason we don’t have as many women in political office as men is primarily because they are not held to the same standards as we hold men. As it stands now, both men and women hold women to standards that are simply impossible to meet, even for men.

    I’m voting for Kay!

If the tax is gathered by sales, everything is transparent and we will know when it goes up.
As it is now, politicians say they reduced the rate, but if you research you see they increased the apprasials and netted no reduction at all.

At least IF taxes were gathered by sales, you would have the decision whether to buy or not buy instead of like it is now where your choice is only PAY, PAY, PAY!!!

    Marille,

I disagree with that statement. And yes, I am angry at Kay because she is a liar. She is not a conservative, she just does not support the notion that women should have the option of abortions. She spends our money like water and is WASTEFUL. She also lied to Texans about voting for the banker stimulus plan (the day before she voted yes for it in Washington she was in Texas and said she would vote NO).

Similarly, I am angry at Martha Coakley because she ran a BAD campaign and then flip flopped on voting for the health care bill. Then, even though the polls show anything relating to the current congress/senate or Mr. Obama is WAY LOW and should be avoided by those running for office she is seen–the day before the election–hugging and kissing him on stage. Dumb and dumber.

I want women to win, but they have to be winners and they have to be the right women. I was ashamed when I saw Martha loving up on Mr. Obama and I was disappointed with Kay’s voting record (93% of the time she votes YES on pork legislation). I admit TNA and other here do not agree with me, but I have a right to my opinion. Perry may be my second the last choice, but Kay would be my last among those running. The LAST thing we need is someone who is going to spend money we don’t have…..

I think it is an assumption in the extreme to assume that Medina’s votes would go to Hutchison. Who is to say they wouldn’t go to Perry?

And yes, Scott Brown is a turncoat traitor. But it is not my fault he is a liar. He will only serve one term, that is for sure, and he is already suffering–and rightly so–for being a liar and cheater.

It is about real Americans fighting for real issues–the right to work, the right to a living wage, the right to proper representation, etc., etc. 2010 and 2012 will be monumentally important election years in America, and if we fail to do the right thing we may become another socialist, government owned, 30% or more on the public dole failure of a society. I hope this will not be the case.

Jennifer I understand your frustration. I as former democrat am now independent too. just I will not run flying colors to the next movement. the tea party unites under fiscal responsibility and the grave outlook seeing the national debt on the horizon. and even this unifying theme is felt with different intensity. otherwise you have all kind of followers, plenty of misogynists, plenty of disrespect to women, plenty of republicans just using the outrage, many in no way better or worse than the democrats. this could be the movement to split the republicans and save the unworthy democrats. going in as the third candidate and not pulling out when you are way behind, just establishes the status quo. of course Kay Bailey Hutchison made errors in her long voting past. but hey weren’t we excited to have a female president not only because she was so qualified but also because she was a woman who would represent us. we need women because they are women as representatives. the female experience is otherwise completely shut out of politics and you know as well as me all the grievances.

    marille,

I think we need to have a conference on this topic. Let’s get a lot of women together and talk about it, in person, and hash it out. We need more women, that is for sure, and I think we need the BEST women (and men) to save this country. I see harsh realities the media is ignoring. I called the housing crisis 8 years ago, when I saw inflated home prices and people pulling $200,000 out in home equity loans when they were making $45,000 a year to pay off credit card bills and I thought “this is not good.” We are all living on borrowed money and borrowed time, and we need — and by we I mean women — to sit down and decide what we are going to do to save the world. And while that comment is bordeling comedic, there is more truth to it than many will admit.
