The Last Airbender (Nickelodeon’s Avatar)
Back in 2005 I remember my son (then age 7) was riveted by a new show on Nickelodeon called Avatar: The Last Airbender. He had previously been into Pokemon and Yu-Gi-Oh when he was younger and I had watched some of these anime programs and was less than impressed. These animated cartoons showed girls as ditzy damsels who couldn’t get out of their own way unless there was some male there to take care of them. There were very few anime shows on Cartoon Network that didn’t fall into the …

Blaming Working Women for Poverty
Working women are being blamed for a lot of things one of which is poverty. They look at the fact that the majority of poor people are women, and so it is assumed that working women are either the cause of poverty or that they contribute to it. The fact is that most poor adults are women has nothing to do with either the breakdown of our families and communities or of the poverty in these communities.
The breakdown of our families and communities occurred because of the old …

HUFFPO: Save Us Martha!
The following op-ed is featured at The Huffington Post.
In recent days, women’s advocates have been strikingly hushed. It seems that women’s health is under assault and there’s not a damn thing we can do about it. Even feminist leader Ellen Malcolm resigned from the organization she founded in seeming disgust as her candidates acquiesced. All this has left me to ponder: who will be our modern day Eleanor Roosevelt?
Could it be Martha Coakley? Coakley has an impeccable list of accomplishments, to accompany her character and …

Sandra “Cha Ching” Bullock Makes History….
Variety is reporting that Sandra Bullock’s latest film, Blind Side, is is the first movie ever “driven solely by a top female star” to break $200 million.
In comparison, Bullock’s A-list counterparts have come close, but never pulled in moviegoers in such big numbers. Julia Roberts’ “Erin Brockovich” — which is often compared to “The Blind Side” — made $125.6 million domestically, while Meryl Streep’s “The Devil Wears Prada” earned $124.7 million. The only other female-centric film to ever crack the $200 million club was 2002’s “My Big Fat Greek Wedding,” which …

Dear Mr. President: Your Policies Are Damaging Women the Most
Nine Republican Congresswomen including Rep Cathy McMorris Rodgers, Rep Marsha Blackburn, Rep Sue Myrick, Rep Candice Miller, Rep Kay Granger, Rep Ginny Brown-Waite, Rep Shelley Moore Capito, Rep Mary Bono Mack and Rep Lynn Jenkins have put together an Open Letter to President Obama and published this letter at Pajamas Media.
As we reflect on what the past year has meant for our families, it’s clear that President Obama’s policies are hitting women especially hard.
Since the president took office on January 20, about one million women have lost their jobs and …

Congratulations Sarah Thomas!
In case you missed it over the holidays, Sarah Thomas made history by becoming the first woman ever to officiate a college football bowl game at the Little Caesars Bowl matchup between Ohio and Marshall. Thomas became the first woman to be an official for a major college football game in 2007, and now has added a bowl game to her resume. She is one of only five women currently officiating in major college football, and is on the NFL’s officiating prospects list.
From ESPN on Sarah Thomas,
“I noticed her before the …

Dr. Sally K. Ride and the Science Promotion Tour
Former Astronaut Dr. Sally K. Ride is promoting the sciences in a tour encouraged by the Obama Administration. Dr. Ride’s efforts in inspiring America’s youth to pursue careers in the sciences was written up in a New York Time’s Blog out of the Bay Area in California. The title of the blog, Math, Tech and the Women Who Don’t Love Them, incensed me just a tad. Yup, let’s just perpetuate the false rumor that women don’t like math or technology, Mr. Shih.
Our American youth are not stampeding into graduate programs …

A Hopeful 2010…
2009 was a big year for women and for this organization. We did our part in helping the country define, understand and end the silent acceptance of sexism. Hats off to us all for our hard work!
For those of you that attended our fundraiser, or watched the video (here), you’ve heard our message about the battle against sexism:
…sexism is alive and thriving in this country. Women have made great strides, yes, but just beneath the surface, where eyes cannot discern, the roots of sexism and misogyny have …

Why Time Passed Obama By – and Lambasted Palin
Interesting article over at The Globe and Mail.
Rex Murphy wonders if the media’s super harsh treatment of Governor Palin wasn’t to compensate in a sense for their hands off coverage of President Obama:
It’s an uncomfortable pivot from the audacity of hope to buyer’s remorse. Very uncomfortable for those in the media who played the cheerleader for Mr. Obama, who skated by controversies that would have sunk other candidates or abandoned the ruthless investigations they would have pressed on less congenial candidates.
The ferocity they applied to the Republican vice-presidential candidate, Sarah …

Is the Treatment of Janet Napolitano Sexist?
Is Secretary of Homeland Security, Janet Napolitano on her way out the door?
And if so, would it be for her lack of ability to do her job or sexism? Is she being held to a different standard because she is a woman? Comment and tell us what you think (examples please).
The Sunday talk show The McLaughlin Group did their best guess as to who else might not be around at the end of 2010. Here’s their take:
