Mother-Daughter Empowerment Activity

Jan 26, 2010 | 4 Comments

The opinions expressed herein are those of the author, and not necessarily those of The New Agenda.
This January, my mother and I have discovered a truly uplifting way to empower ourselves: we cut wood. We live out in the country and rely upon wood and our wood-burning stove for heat. A cold-front was approaching for the first week of January, but my father was too busy at his job to come home and deal with the wood.
I had provided the basic inspiration. Last December, we were running out of wood, …

Alert: Specter Apologizes to Bachmann

Jan 25, 2010 | 5 Comments

Congratulations to our viewers who took the time to email or call Senator Specter’s office.  And congratulations to The New Agenda for once again be the only women’s organization to speak out against sexism directed at conservative women.
The New Agenda’s Amy Siskind wrote an op-ed at The Huffington Post asking for Specter to apologize and retire.
Today Specter did the right thing and apologized:
Sen. Arlen Specter called Rep. Michele Bachmann (R., Minn.) yesterday to apologize for his comments during a radio interview last week, the senator’s office said, and she called …

Was There Gender Bias in Coakley’s Defeat?

Jan 25, 2010 | 8 Comments

The country is continuing to digest the factors in Martha Coakley’s defeat.  Coakley would have become Massachusetts first female senator.
The first story on this subject, Women ponder Massachusetts glass ceiling was published in Politico.
Yesterday, The New York Times resurfaced the question: After Senate Race, Some Say Barrier for Women in Massachusetts Still Stands. Dan Payne, a Democratic strategist, had this to say:
Mr. Payne said he believed women had given Ms. Coakley a late push in her primary victory against three male opponents. But he said Ms. Coakley never mentioned …

NY Bar Association: Man! I Feel Like A Woman!

Jan 25, 2010 | 3 Comments

The opinions expressed herein and those of the author, and not necessarily those of The New Agenda.

During its annual meeting at the end of the month, New York State Bar Association had planned a presentation, “Their Point of View: Tips From the Other Side,” which was described as a “distinguished panel of gentlemen from the legal field” who would “discuss the strengths and weaknesses of women in the areas of communication, negotiation, medication [sic], arbitration, organization and women’s overall management of their legal work.” State bar president Michael Getnick …

WOW! Cheryle Jackson, IL Senate Hopeful

Jan 25, 2010 | 4 Comments

Cheryle Jackson is running for U.S. Senate in Illinois. And she’s reaching out to women big time. It is nice to see a candidate who places a high value on women voters and support. She has a section on her website dedicated to organizing women. WOW: Women Organizing Women, with the slogan “When women get together, two things happen. Stuff gets done and change takes place!” I like it!
Not only is she the only woman, she is also the only African American candidate, and her endorsements show it.
Endorsing Jackson …

Thank You Mr. O’Reilly

Jan 24, 2010 | 3 Comments

Thank you Mr. O’Reilly!
Finally someone addresses this! I’m shocked how few people have. For me, Senator Scott Brown posing in Cosmo was just not a big deal EXCEPT for the fact that it would have been treated very differently had it been a woman. A woman politician would have been raked over the coals for even appearing in a swimsuit competition (hmmm like Sarah Palin…) but Senator Brown gets a pass. I’m not even taking a side on whether he SHOULD get a pass, I’m just saying let’s be FAIR.  …

OP-ED: Specter Should Apologize and Retire

Jan 23, 2010 | 6 Comments

The following op-ed titled Specter Harkens Back to Anita Hill With His Comments to Bachmann is featured at The Huffington Post.
Who can forget where they were during the Anita Hill-Clarence Thomas hearings? Or how they felt while listening to fourteen white men cynically grill an alleged victim of sexual harassment? The aftermath of the hearings was a new awareness of gender discrimination. But, decades later, has our country come to grips with the disparate treatment of men and women in the workplace? Even if that workplace is our federal government?
This …

Arlen Specter – Then and Now

Jan 23, 2010 | 2 Comments

For many women, Arlen Specter’s recent attack on Rep. Michele Bachmann brought back painful memories of his participation in the Anita Hill and Clarence Thomas controversy.  For those of you who are too young to remember the Senatorial circus that arose around the confirmation of Supreme Court justice Clarence Thomas…
When the nomination moved to the floor of the Senate, it took a sudden and dramatic turn when Anita Hill, a law professor at the University of Oklahoma, came forward with accusations that Clarence Thomas had sexually harassed her. Hill had worked …

Why are only Republican Women Fair Targets?

Jan 23, 2010 | 52 Comments

The opinions expressed herein and those of the author, and not necessarily those of The New Agenda.  Viewers are welcome to submit blog pieces on women’s issues.
“What is it with the Left’s obsession over conservative women and swimsuits?” asks Michelle Malkin. The younger generations of Liberal hypocrites prided themselves for pre-breakdown Britney Spears being “feminist” and “sexually-empowered” while now condemning a Conservative woman who starred in a harmless 1984 music video. So, according to these Liberal hypocrites, only liberal women can be empowered but conservative women cannot be empowered in the slightest. …

Specter’s circa 1950 sexist remarks at Bachmann

Jan 22, 2010 | 10 Comments

Well if you had any doubt that it is open season on women politicians who want to voice their opinions, check on Sen Arlen Specter.
Yesterday on a radio talk show Big Talker 1210 (see our interview on that station on our home page), Specter interrupted Rep Michelle Bachmann while she was expressing her view and said:
I’m going to treat you like a lady, now act like one.
And not only once – also a second time.
You can hear the radio interview here.
You can also listen to Bachmann defend herself on Hannity’s …
