Congratulations to our viewers who took the time to email or call Senator Specter’s office. And congratulations to The New Agenda for once again be the only women’s organization to speak out against sexism directed at conservative women.
The New Agenda’s Amy Siskind wrote an op-ed at The Huffington Post asking for Specter to apologize and retire.
Today Specter did the right thing and apologized:
Sen. Arlen Specter called Rep. Michele Bachmann (R., Minn.) yesterday to apologize for his comments during a radio interview last week, the senator’s office said, and she called back and “accepted the apology.”
Together we can and will fight against sexism!

fine, that he apologized. but I am glad that we were reminded of his attitude towards Anita Hill way back then. he has to carry the fall out of patriarchal arrogant attitude with him.
marille,
In the Philly News at this link:
http://www.philly.com/philly/n.....d=82598702
it was mentioned that Specter does not want his behavior toward Anita Hill to surface again because he has an election in November. I am glad we mentioned it for that very fact. Everyone needs to remember how he behaved. What is that saying about teaching an old dog new tricks?
Awesome! I don’t understand Bachmann politically but no female politician should have to accept such antiquated condescending and sexist language from their male peers.
Brava New Agenda for having the guts to speak up!
Congrats – I found the silence of other women’s organizations stunning – particularly as I heard on the radio this morning that NOW, the Feminist Majority and the Women’s Media Center are all vehemently protesting the Tebow Super Bowl ad. I feel completely out of touch with their priorities. Tim and his mother are apparently going to discuss her story, and it will no doubt have a pro-life message. If NOW et al were concerned about the message, they should raise the $2.5 million and present their own story (it surely couldn’t be hard to find a woman positively impacted by access to safe, legal abortion. The fact that they want to silence other voices disturbs me, and the fact that they continuously fail to support conservative women is marginalizing them.
Perhaps Specter’s apology is an indication that some politicians are beginning to recognize that women are a force to be reckoned with and antagonizing them with arrogant, patriarchal, behavior is a mistake. Let’s hope more of them figure this out. Soon.
