Count the Battle Victories, but Prepare for Senate War….

Dec 10, 2009 | 16 Comments

It’s been a good week for women.

We can notch a victory for the Mammogram Coverage Amendment sponsored by Senator Mikulski (D) Senator Snowe (R).

We can celebrate AG Martha Coakley winning her battle to become the Democratic nominee for Ted Kennedy’s open seat in MA. Given that MA is heavily Democratic, Coakley looks to be a shoe in to become that state’s first female senator AND raise our count of women in the Senate to 18!

Those of us that are pro-choice can be proud of the women of BOTH …

Boxer: We Don’t Restrict Viagara Funding, Why Restrict Abortion

Dec 9, 2009 | 21 Comments

Hat tip to Tina.
This is a argument that women have been making for years. During the 2008 election and prior, it has been noted that many insurance companies refused to cover certain birth control for women while gladly covering Viagara for men.
Senator Boxer brought Viagara back to the Senate Floor yesterday in arguing against Senator Nelson’s attempts to limit abortion funding.

SEN. BARBARA BOXER: There’s nothing in this amendment that says if a man some days wants to buy Viagra, for example, that his pharmaceutical coverage cannot cover it, that …

For those searching for “feminist friendly” gifts or at least something besides Barbie and princess-everything, here are a few recommendations from my daughters and me.
My daughter received Tom Tierney’s Famous American Women Paper Dolls for her birthday. Tom Tierney is a famous paper doll artist. His paper doll books are very well done showing authentic dress of the period with outfits worn at famous speeches or events by each of the historic figures.

My daughter enjoyed the whole process of cutting out the dolls and outfits. She puts the dolls out …

A poetic thought about the Massachusetts Special Election

Dec 8, 2009 | 5 Comments

Please read the important op-ed by Margery Egan titled Can Martha Coakley win it for womenkind? published today in The Boston Herald.  Today is the Massachusetts Vote.

Eenie, Meenie, Mienie, and Moe,
Eenie’s the gal who is running the show.
The other three M’s want Teddy’s seat,
but now it’s the gal that they all have to beat.
When all four are equal on paper and ink,
“don’t vote based on gender” will make the worst stink.
But historically that’s how we’ve casted our vote,
it’s just been for the M’s, so take heed and take note.
We need …

If Healthcare Fails, They’ll Blame Women

Dec 7, 2009 | 16 Comments

(This story is also featured at The Huffington Post.)
As if we didn’t see this coming.
The ability of the Senate to pass the healthcare bill could well come down to one issue – abortion.
Let me give you the advance preview of how this will play out. The Senate will reach a compromise on the Public Option. Then, Sen Reid and Speaker Pelosi will continue their appeal of this moment in history (e.g. so suck it up ladies).
In fact, Sen Reid already greased the wheels for this today when he …

In Celebration of Tory Burch

Dec 7, 2009 | 2 Comments

Question: Where is it easier for a woman entrepreneur to get a micro-finance loan? The U.S. or India? Read to the end for the answer.
A major premise of The New Agenda is that getting women into positions of power in politics, corporate America and academia will help to boost up other woman. Many of us who founded The New Agenda, myself included, benefited from having women mentors in our career paths.
This week on CNBC I heard an interview of Tory Burch that made me want to cheer. …
