Monserrate Gets Away with it…(UPDATED)

Oct 16, 2009 | 4 Comments

Monserrate got away with it, plain and simple.
For those of you new to The New Agenda, you can learn all about this case by reading here.
The short and sweet of it is that Hiram Monserrate, a NY State Senator slashed his girlfriends face with a broken glass requiring her to get multiple stitches. As would be typical, after initially going to the hospital and telling the police, the victim changed her mind and decided not to press charges. Difference this time: 4 cameras in the …

“A Big Mashed-Up Bag of Meat with Lipstick on It”

Oct 16, 2009 | 6 Comments

The following piece is cross-posted with permission by Jenn Q. Public. Opinions expressed herein and those of the author, and not necessarily those of The New Agenda.
Brazen misogyny is alive and thriving at MSNBC, and as usual, Keith Olbermann is serving it up with his signature sneering contempt for women.  While honoring conservative author Michelle Malkin with the “Worst Person in the World” award, the frothing commentator ranted on Tuesday that without her “total mindless, morally bankrupt, knee-jerk, fascistic hatred,” Malkin would “just be a big mashed-up bag of …

Cheers to Dr. Ostrom: Yet Another Glass Ceiling Shattered

Oct 16, 2009 | 4 Comments

The opinions expressed herein are those of the author, and not necessarily those of The New Agenda.
Last week I wrote that the only Nobel area where women have yet to win a prize was Economics.  Elinor Ostrom shattered that glass ceiling this week!
Not only has Dr. Ostrom taken this prestigious prize, but she earned it in a distinctly womanly way.  Ostrom demonstrates how a combination of privatization and cooperation can maximize both community wealth and individual opportunity.  To the competitive, archetypically male …

A priceless piece written by Calvin Trillin

Oct 15, 2009 | No Comment

This priceless piece written by Calvin Trillin over at The Nation came to us from several senders today. We wanted to share it will all of our readers.
What Whoopi Goldberg (‘Not a Rape-Rape’), Harvey Weinstein (‘So-Called Crime’) et al. Are Saying in Their Outrage Over the Arrest of Roman Polanski
A youthful error? Yes, perhaps.
But he’s been punished for this lapse–
For decades exiled from LA
He knows, as he wakes up each day,
He’ll miss the movers and the shakers.
He’ll never get to see the Lakers.
For just one old and small …

HuffPo: Is Obama Uncomfortable Around Women?

Oct 15, 2009 | 3 Comments

The following piece by Amy Siskind is featured at The Huffington Post.  You can read the entire story there.

There’s a sign going up at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.  It reads:  “Boy’s Club:  Girls Not Allowed.”
Despite much talk of hope and change, President Obama seems largely tone-deaf to women and women’s issues.  Post-racial country – yes.  Post gender inequality – not so much.
Were we sold a brand that touted diversity, yet delivered a president with a woman problem?
Earlier this week, CNN interviewed me for a segment on President Obama called Where …

The magnificent seven: Senate women pave the way

Oct 15, 2009 | No Comment

Wow! I read this amazing article a few days ago: The Magnificent seven: Senate women pave the way. If you haven’t read it yet, please do. It is very inspiring and brings home some important points which I think are key for women’s progress in our country, and points discussed time and time again here at The New Agenda.
Key point: As a recent Unifem study shows, in societies which have achieved proportional representation for women, women’s issues are addressed. Since women and girls are more than half the population, this …

Letterman Brings Back Memories of the Good Old Days When Every Woman Was up for Grabs

Oct 14, 2009 | One Comment

The last few days of news have been thought-provoking.  Roman Polanski, who drugged and raped a young girl finally arrested and hopefully will be extradited back here to face his sentencing, and yet, there are still people who support and protect this man.  Who actually started and signed a petition to release this fellow from jail.  Whoopi Goldberg talking about what Polanski did not being real rape-rape?  Did I read that correctly?  Did she really mean that?
And then there’s that guy, Letterman, again.  Weren’t we all just recently treated to …

Kay Bailey Hutchison: Woman Senator, Champion of Women

Oct 12, 2009 | 5 Comments

The opinions expressed herein are those of the author, and not necessarily those of The New Agenda.
Kay Bailey Hutchison was born on July 22, 1943 in Galveston. She is the first woman Senator from Texas. She graduated with a BA from the University of Texas in 1962 and went to the University of Texas School of Law where she received her J.D in 1967.
Kay attributes her success to her supportive parents and particularly to her feminist-thinking father:
While I didn’t have the lofty ambitions, I did have the encouragement …
