The incidence of rape in the military by fellow soldiers is completely disgraceful. Even more disgraceful has been the 'handling' of the problem, consisting mostly of covering up the rapes or punishing anyone who speaks up about it. I think it was Stan Goff, a self-described commie vet ex-Marine, who said that whatever is going on in the civilian culture, whether it be racism, sexism, etc., it will become magnified many times over in the military in times of war. Considering that we live in a burgeoning rape culture at home, it should come as no shock that this culture is thriving in the military in combat zones that are largely lawless.

One of the best strategies New Agenda has is promoting issues that women can unite on, rather than ones like abortion that divide us. I have yet to find very many women who support rape itself, or rape culture, once they realize what it is. As we've seen with the Polanski apologists, rape is where the rubber meets the road on whether people fully support the quirky notion of women as people with full human rights, otherwise known as feminism. This is the issue that separates real feminist allies from the pretenders.

Shakesville has a very good piece on rape culture here: http://shakespearessister.blogspot.com/2009/10/rape-culture-101.html
