Trailblazer for Women Nominated For Appeals Court

Sep 17, 2009 | 2 Comments

President Obama nominated Virginia Supreme Court Justice Barbara Milano Keenan to serve on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit.
Keenan, 59, has been a state Supreme Court justice since 1991 and a trailblazer for women in the law throughout her career. At 29, she was the first female general district court judge in Virginia when she was selected for the Fairfax County bench in 1980. She became the first female circuit court judge when she was promoted to that court in 1982.
In 1985, Keenan was one of 10 …

Former centerfold reveals political double standard

Sep 17, 2009 | 4 Comments

Hat tip to Casey Corcoran of the BPHC for passing along this Newsweek article by his friend Katie Connolly.
Katie Connolly wrote an excellent piece in Newsweek titled GOP Senate Candidate’s Racy Pics Don’t Matter — Because He’s a Dude. Even the title is funny, if the punchline weren’t so tragic.
Katie’s points out a blatant double standard in the way men and women politicians are treated – also known to our readers here as SEXISM!
The piece discusses a GOP candidate, MA Senator Scott Brown, who is running for Ted Kennedy’s …

My Outrage at Human Trafficking and ACORN

Sep 16, 2009 | 14 Comments

In the past few weeks I have been amazed and thoroughly disgusted to see videos all over the web which depict a young couple, posing as a prostitute and her pimp, at different ACORN offices applying for help in getting a house so they could have a place where they could engage in their “business.” The couple stated that they would be using several underage girls, from El Salvador, to “service” their clientele. These statements were not met with outrage or a quick call to a law enforcement …

Obama: A Working Class Woman’s Story

I like Barack.  I like Hillary too but I agreed with her decision to support Obama at the time she made it.
I really admire the way he’s going to all these town hall meetings and responding to criticism. It’s true that he has to compromise to get anything through at all but he’s working his butt off to get …

Afghan Enemy Combatants Have More Rights Than Afghan Women Do

Sep 15, 2009 | No Comment

The opinions expressed herein are those of the author and not necessarily those of The New Agenda.
The Washington Post reports that “[h]undreds of prisoners held by the U.S. military in Afghanistan will for the first time have the right to challenge their indefinite detention and call witnesses in their defense under a new review system being put in place this week”:
The new system will be applied to the more than 600 Afghans held at the Bagram military base, and will mark the first substantive change in …

MA Senate Seat: a Harmful Op-ed Written by a Woman

Sep 15, 2009 | 7 Comments

This past Sunday, the Boston Globe published an op-ed by Yvonne Abraham titled Merit over Gender. In the piece, Yvonne goes through great lengths to explain why we should not vote for AG Martha Coakley because she is a woman.  Mind you, AG Coakley has 2 decades of public service and impeccable list of honors and accomplishments. As well, Massachusetts has yet to elect a female U.S. Senator.
By writing this piece, Yvonne is unwittingly supporting the other candidates, all male, who are running against AG Coakley.

On the Anniversary of Lehman’s Collaspe…

Sep 14, 2009 | No Comment

Today marks the one year anniversary of Lehman Brother’s collapse, which brought on a major crisis to our country’s financial markets.
In an op-ed in The New York Times in February, Nicholas Kristof posited:

At the recent World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, some of the most interesting discussions revolved around whether we would be in the same mess today if Lehman Brothers had been Lehman Sisters. The consensus (and this is among the dead white men who parade annually at Davos) is that the optimal bank would have been Lehman Brothers …

Is President Obama Good for Women?

Sep 14, 2009 | 20 Comments

To Our Viewers:
Obama's First Cabinet Meeting – Lots of Suits
Many of you take the time to write to me or to our organization about President Barack Obama and his record on women issues. Many more of you comment on our blog stories.
Over the weekend, a member sent me a startling email. Less than 10% of President Obama’s “czars” are women. Yes, according to this email, only 3 out of 32. Can this possibly be true? The New Agenda spoke out about the lack of women …
