Dallas Honor Killings: Yes, A Women’s Issue

Sep 22, 2009 | 7 Comments

Thanks to Phyllis Chesler for her article Mother of Dead Dallas Girls Calls Their Murder An “Honor Killing”
On New Year’s Day 2008, two beautiful young girls, Amina and Sarah Said were murdered by their father in so-called honor killings. Aasiya Hassan was beheaded earlier this year by her husband. As The New Agenda’s Amy Siskind has previously pointed out, many women’s groups have refused to address these acts of violence because they consider it a cultural issue rather than a woman’s issue.
Perpetuating the cycle of violence against women by placing …

TNA IN THE NEWS: Monserrate Case Fuels Women’s Fight for Justice

Sep 21, 2009 | 2 Comments

As the trial of NY State Senator Hiram Monserrate gets underway today, The New Agenda and NOW NY are featured in an article in the Legislative Gazette, an Albany newspaper.
The article cites the efforts of TNA and NOW NY members to take action and speak out on this case:
Last Wednesday, The New Agenda, in conjunction with NOW-NYS, sent out an “action alert” to its members urging them to write or call state Supreme Court Justice William M. Erlbaum regarding Monserrate’s trial. The alert asked women to “let him know how …

Why I’m still a Feminist

Sep 21, 2009 | One Comment

The opinions expressed herein are those of the author and not necessarily those of The New Agenda.
When I was in high school, in the torrid 1960′s, it was Germaine Greer and Gloria Steinem. Gloria’s followers tended to become active in political organizations while Germaine’s followers headed out in search of adventure. Off I went. I bummed around Europe, got married and divorced and bumped smack into the sexism of the early 70′s.
I was abused by a then fashionable “encounter group” and had a lot of …

Obama disses Paterson, in part for Gillibrand pick

Sep 20, 2009 | 16 Comments

Hat tip to John Horning for bringing this story to our attention.

In what The New York Times described as an an extraordinary intervention, President Obama has requested that Governor Paterson of New York drop his campaign for re-election.
One of the main reasons cited, was Gov Paterson’s selection of Sen Kirsten Gillibrand to take Secretary Hillary Clinton’s open seat:
In addition, the relationship between Mr. Obama and Mr. Paterson has been shaky, dating to the governor’s selection of a replacement for Hillary Rodham Clinton, who resigned from the Senate to become secretary …

Robert Morgenthau owes female candidate an apology

Sep 20, 2009 | No Comment

Manhattan DA Robert Morgenthau owes former judge Leslie Crocker Snyder an apology.
Snyder was running to become Manhattan’s first woman DA. Snyder lost the Democratic Primary this past week to Cyrus Vance, Jr.
Passing the baton at the boys' club
The New York Times reports:
Mr. Vance’s campaign had started out slowly against Leslie Crocker Snyder, a former judge… But Mr. Vance emerged as the establishment candidate with the backing of Mr. Morgenthau.
Ah, thank goodness for the boys club.
Here’s the disturbing part (again from the NYT):
Mr. Morgenthau took a swipe at Ms. Snyder …

A Rock and a Hard Place: Women in the workforce and family

Sep 20, 2009 | 12 Comments

My experience with “women in the workforce” is rather diverse.  I grew up in a household where my mother was a stay-at-home mom.  My older sister also has chosen to stay home with my nephew.  I also have a best friend who was never a stay-at-home mom.
An article by the New York Times shows that women who have chosen to stay home in the past are now re-entering the workforce due to financial hardships brought on by the recession.  My mother faced a similar situation and was forced to enter …

Should women consider a “Mr.” Mentor?

Sep 19, 2009 | 2 Comments

The opinions expressed herein are those of the author and not necessarily those of  The New Agenda.
In my field, my role model pool is overwhelmingly male.  Though I’ve no problem with social adjustments, my paltry femme connections in town are a far cry from the consistent estrogen fix I enjoyed while living in my college sorority house.  I find myself frequently homesick for women.
Here is an article recommending that I take advantage of that male field — suggesting that women find male mentors.  The article …

A Rant: Why I am INCENSED at HuffPo!!!

Sep 18, 2009 | 5 Comments

Are women a species worthy of examination and study?
Yesterday, The Huffington Post launched a section titled The Sad, Shocking Truth About How Women are Feeling. Who is examining this “sad, shocking truth”? A man!
What! You have to be kidding me. Did I fall asleep and wake up in the 1960s? What happened HuffPo — have women suddenly been banned from the keyboards?
How can a man possibly understand what it is to be a woman? Are we some sort of species worthy of study and …

NOW NY and TNA Take on Monserrate

Sep 18, 2009 | 2 Comments

Let’s keep the heat on!
The letters and calls from our ACTION ALERT are getting noticed.
The NY Daily News wrote about our efforts yesterday.
And there are rumblings that Monserrate wants a new judge.
But, he can’t silence all women!  Keep up the heat!

More Girls in Class = Higher GPA!

Sep 18, 2009 | 6 Comments

The opinions expressed herein are those of the author and not necessarily those of The New Agenda.
My name is Jennifer Kruschwitz and I suffer from CCD.  In this situation, CCD does not stand for charge-coupled devices; it stands for Compulsive Counting Disorder.  I have been a self-diagnosed CCD sufferer since I changed my major in college from biology to optics.  CCD drives me to count the number of women vs. the total number of students in any science or mathematics class that I am enrolled.  It also causes me to …
