The Benefits of Girls on Engineering Teams
The opinions expressed herein are those of the author, and not necessarily those of The New Agenda.
Two years ago my son and I got involved in an outside team competition that encourages children to build, program, and innovate with tiny robots. The teams are driven by an international program focused on inspiring children in the areas of engineering and technology called First Lego League (FLL). FLL is an elementary/middle school program that is connected with FIRST – For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology. FIRST’s mission is:
To inspire …

Pop Culture and Feminism

Isn’t it bizarre that Mad Men, that seemingly-misogynistic, impeccably-conceived AMC series, is written by women, while Sex and the City, home of kitschy, “girl power” Platonic archetypes, was the single-girl fantasy for gay best friends?
I’m way into Mad Men. While I’m not a big television person, there’s no better barometer for public culture than popular TV. Mad Men had me at Don Draper’s first steamy glance. What could …

An Apology for Sexism….
Are we finally making some progress here folks?
Hat tip to our member Gwilym McGrew for forwarding a very heartening story. A reporter who actually issued a public apology to Sarah Palin for verbiage he had used in an article:
Today I must apologize to Mrs. Palin personally and on behalf of the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner for the choice of words used on the bottom of Wednesday’s front page regarding her speaking engagement in Hong Kong this week to a group of global investors.
We used offensive language — “A broad in Asia” …

Last week, Arianna Huffington posted a piece inspired by a book newly published by one of her bloggers, Marcus Buckingham; a book whose findings will set us all straight about why women are so flustered even though we’ve accomplished so much.
I write for MORE.com and through that site connected …

Michelle Obama and Poor Women’s Health
Michelle Obama came out swinging in the health care debate this week after a lengthy absence from the political scene. Her cause? Poor women’s health. This is absolutely a noble cause, as women and children account for the majority of people living in poverty. Mrs. Obama said that her husband’s health insurance reform efforts were “the next step” in women’s long quest for equality and opportunity. I wish I could agree with her, but I doubt the sincerity of her rhetoric when I look at what the administration and congress …

Forbes Celebrates Women Leaders in Science Field
Last week, Forbes published an article titled Mythbusters: Who Says Women Can’t Do Math And Science? which describes how women executives with science degrees are now leading some of the world’s largest companies. The opinions expressed herein are those of the author and not necessarily those of The New Agenda.
There is nothing more exciting to me than to be reading my morning digital news and seeing a Forbes.com article featuring Xerox CEO Ursula Burns. Having a woman of her stature in my community here in Rochester, …

Breaking the Gender-Merit Link
The New Agenda’s Nancy Hopkins wrote an op-ed in The Huffington Post titled Breaking the Gender-Merit Link in which Nancy discusses the gender-bias facing AG Martha Coakley in her run for the Massachusetts Senate Seat.
The notoriously liberal state of Massachusetts has never had a female senator in its roughly 220-year existence, a deficit that may persist unless we stop saddling women with a higher burden to prove that they are qualified. This year, in a special election to replace Ted Kennedy, we have a woman running for the office. …

Monserrate and Victim Blaming
I have been a bit curious as to how NY State Senator Monserrate would explain the slash on his girlfriend’s face. After all, the attack was captured on video cameras in the apartment building where it occurred.
In Day 1 of the trial, that questioned was answered – it’s the victim fault!
Here’s Monserrate’s version of what occurred courtesy of the New York Post:
State Sen. Hiram Monserrate’s drunk girlfriend was slashed across the face in a freak accident, after he tried to get her a glass of water and she stumbled into …
