Trailblazer for Women Nominated For Appeals Court
September 17, 2009

|President Obama nominated Virginia Supreme Court Justice Barbara Milano Keenan to serve on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit.
Keenan, 59, has been a state Supreme Court justice since 1991 and a trailblazer for women in the law throughout her career. At 29, she was the first female general district court judge in Virginia when she was selected for the Fairfax County bench in 1980. She became the first female circuit court judge when she was promoted to that court in 1982.
In 1985, Keenan was one of 10 judges named to the first Virginia Court of Appeals, and the only woman, when that court was created. She was selected for the state Supreme Court, the second female justice there, in 1991.
Women are 51% of the population, yet we are represented by only
- 17% by Congress
- 13% of state governors
- 22% of the US Supreme Court
Our country needs the benefit of women’s perspective in all areas of government.
Nominations such as Barbara Keenan’s should be recognized and strongly encouraged. Please send President Obama an email thanking him for nominating Ms. Keenan. Let him know your concerns regarding inadequate representation of half the population and that you look forward to his nominating more women as a way of addressing these concerns.
Brava Barbara!

Yay, for Barbara Keenan!
Congrats to Barbara.
