California’s New Representative: Judy Chu
The opinions expressed herein are those of the author, and not necessarily those of The New Agenda.
On July 14th, Judy Chu was elected as a Representative from the State of California, becoming the first Chinese-American woman elected to U.S. Congress. She was born in 1957. Her mother was a Chinese immigrant, and her father was also Chinese but with roots stretching further into our country’s history. Judy Chu graduated from UCLA with a doctorate in psychology and practiced immigration law.
Her rise in politics was a gradual one, …

“Funny People” not funny…..
I am hardly pollyanna when it comes to bad language. I did, after all, spend years on trading floors where 4 letter words were used with the regularity that the rest of society reserves for “the.”
That’s why I am wondering if our culture is changing, or if I am just becoming more aware?
This past weekend, I went to see Funny People starring Adam Sandler. With the summer onslaught of sexism that we seem to be experiencing, I figured I could use a laugh. Only, Funny People was hardly funny.
The thing …

Media Won’t Acknowledge Hate Crimes Against Women & Girls
The New Agenda welcomes this new contributor, whose views are her own, not necessarily those of the organization.
The media’s sexist reporting of the Bridgeville, PA murder rampage is another example proving they won’t acknowledge hate crimes against women. A male blogger who wrote for months about his inability to relate to women then walked into an all-female dance class and shot twelve women, yet none of the articles I read mention the words hate crime, bigot, sexist and the reporters didn’t call feminist groups for a quote.
The media reports the details …

Rethinking Madame President
The author’s opinions are her own, not necessarily those of The New Agenda.
Why has the number of women engaged in politics in the US stalled so badly in the last decade? Why don’t more women run for office? Is their a gender bias in politics? How do women leaders differ from male leaders? Professors Diane Sullivan and Constance Rudnick from the Massachusetts School of Law hoped to get to the bottom of this disturbing decline in women political leaders in their interview with Dr. Caroline Heldman, the co-editor of “Rethinking …

Larry Summers chases ANOTHER woman out…..
There’s an old saying that people are consistent.
One of the main reasons that The New Agenda spoke out in The Washington Post, The Boston Globe, and Politico against Summers as a candidate for Treasury Secretary was because we strongly suspected that his long history of not being able to work with women would follow him to the White House.
Lo and behold, this week, White House Cybersecurity Chief, Melissa Hathaway resigned. The White House tapped Ms. Hathaway, a senior intelligence official who had launched President George W. Bush’s cybersecurity initiative.

Sexism Against Condoleezza Rice Applauded?
The author is commenting on “You’re Welcome, America: A Final Night with George Bush,” a show that comedian Will Ferrell performed to sell-out crowds on Broadway at the Court Theater, and that later was telecast on HBO. The show included a skit in which a woman portraying Condoleezza Rice performed what The Huffington Post described as a “lap dance” “greeted with much acclaim.” The New Agenda did not cover the show at the time, simply becuse we missed it. If you know of other stories we should be covering, send tips or blog submissions …

Sallie Krawcheck moves one step closer to the title….Does Vikram Pandit hate women?
As people who have been following The New Agenda and our blog will know, one of our goals is to get more women into positions of leadership. But not only leadership in the political realm – we focus also on the corporate world and academia.
Sallie Krawcheck
Last October I wrote a piece titled Wall Street Without its Top Three Women: Zoe Cruz, Erin Callan and Sallie Krawcheck. The piece highlighted how the three women who had the best hope of making it to the top – the title – the role …

On Palin and Ahmadinejad
The following poetic expression is a response to an article on Salon.com outling the “remarkable” similarities between the former Governor of Alaska and the President of Iran. The author expresses her own views, not necessarily those of The New Agenda.
Ahmadinejad!
The man that has declared the Holocaust to be a Hoax.
The leader that has threatened to wipe Israel and America off the face of the planet.
The person responsible for the systematic torture, rape, and murder of women, children and gay people in Iran all in the name of faith and LAW!
Is now being compared …

Buffy vs. Edward
The New Agenda welcomes first-time contributor Kaija. She presents her own views, not necessarily those of The New Agenda.
Since The New Agenda has been doing articles lately about how the media treats women and about the media’s impact on how girls view themselves as they grow up, I thought readers would find interesting a post that’s up at wimnonline.org. The author, Jonathan McIntosh is commenting on a 5 min movie he created for NYU about women’s roles in the media, combining clips from Twilight (Edward the sparkly and stalking vampire) …
