An Interview with a True Feminist: Amy Siskind, Co-Founder of The New Agenda
This article is a featured piece on the blog DivineCaroline
Did you ever get that sinking feeling there was just something wrong? Wrong in the sense that what you used believe in just didn’t seem worth it anymore somehow or make sense?
That is how I was beginning to feel about women’s rights. Maybe that might be rhetorical to some, but it is simple just the fact that many women are feeling society today.
Pro-Choice, Pro-Life, Democrat, Republican, Liberal, and Conservative: all words women label themselves as. Could there any more reasons why …

What Happened in the Ladies’ Room
In celebration of The New Agenda’s one-year anniversary, I’ve been reflecting on the moments that have been most meaningful to me. One that stands out happened in the hotel ladies’ room just before our forum on Violence Against Women.
I had finished and was on my way out, when at the last minute I lifted one foot to pull up my knee-high hose. Just then, the door swung open and another woman tried to enter. Since I was standing on one foot, I couldn’t gracefully step aside. So to break the awkwardness, I …

New Echoes Video: Progress for Women?
The author’s views are his own, not necessarily those of The New Agenda.
My wife has edited a new video. That means I’ve rendered, compressed and uploaded a new video. And — oh yeah — I watched it. I was taken aback. I had watched her video of sexism during 2008, but that was an election year. I expected that things would have returned to normal this year. Well, if this is normal, we’re in a pretty bad place. And the comparison between how things are today and how things were 50 …

Did I Really Think That?
Ever stop and wonder, how did I get here? Did I really think that?
In July 2008, Dr. Lynette Long (DC) and Dr. Nancy Hopkins (MA) came to my home for a visit. We met to discuss the way women are treated in the media and what could we do about it. Nancy said “Amy, you should lead a women’s group.” At the time, I smiled but thought, nah – what do I know about women’s groups?
And so one month later, exactly one year ago today, a group of 30 …

White House Women paid less than White House Men:
But can they type?
The author is a university student and the Nye Research Intern at the Center for a New American Security. She originally published this post on her blog, To Love My Country. Her other writings on the same subject are here and here. She expresses her own opinions, not necessarily those of The New Agenda.
It had to be done-I broke down the White House’s July 1 report on staff salaries and compiled a data table to look at the status of women in the administration we voted for. Go math go!
Key Findings:
Numbers of …

An Inspiration for 2010 US Candidates
Shahla Atta
Two women are running for President of Afghanistan: Shahla Atta, a 42 year old Kabul lawmaker and Frozan Fana, a 40 year old orthopedic surgeon who has never held political office. I am moved by the bravery and passion of these two young women. They are literally risking their lives to have the chance to help people and bring about change. The Associated Press article states:
[their campaigns are] an uphill and even dangerous undertaking. Neither has much chance of unseating President Hamid Karzai in the Aug. 20 vote. But …

Howard Kurtz slams Dana Milbank and Chris Cillizza
Here’s what Howard Kurtz had to say about Milbank and Cillizza’s “attempt” at humor – referring to “Mad Bitch” beer in connection with Secretary Clinton.
Nice this weekend to have Howard Kurtz and Bob Herbert speak out for women.
Imagine the power if some of the female media would join in too – how about Maureen Dowd writing about misogyny or Kathleen Parker speaking out about what happened at her paper? Imagine that….

The Patsy T. Mink Equal Opportunity In Education Act (formerly known as Title IX)
The following piece was written in reaction to an op-ed published Thursday in the Washington Post titled As Colleges Cut Athletics, Title IX Does an Injustice to Men
I live in a university town and almost everything that happens in my community has ties to the university. The university’s policies and its programs – especially its athletic programs – impact almost every aspect of our community. So when some years back it was announced that the women’s track team would be facing cuts, and other women’s programs curtailed, those …

Women at Risk….Doing Something About it…
Yes – we hear you!
We know that your are angry and upset. Upset about the seemingly daily sexist attacks against our women leaders. Upset that a man can kill a group of women simply “because” they are women and the media seems to ignore it. Upset because the vicious and violent words against women and girls are used in everyday movies and music. And you write comments here or write to me directly to say: I want to help!
Well, we are doing something about it!
Starting Tuesday, …
