The Latest Mother/Daughter Thing

Aug 16, 2009 | One Comment

What’s the latest mother/daughter activity? Cooking? No.Shopping? No. It’s sports!
The New York Times is reporting that:
As the popularity of youth tournaments has intensified over the past decade, a peculiar trend has emerged: girls’ sporting events tend to attract more relatives and generate more revenue for tourism than similar events for boys. And that is drawing increased attention from economic development officials.
“There are far more people who will travel with 12-year-old girls than even 12-year-old boys,” said Don Schumacher, executive director of the National Association of Sports Commissions, a trade group …

What Every Woman Should Know About Title IX

Aug 16, 2009 | 17 Comments

What Every Woman Should Know is a column on American Women’s History.
Most people like to think of history as a nice, neat, linear progression. That’s hardly how it goes, however, and that little fact is why we have aphorisms like “two steps forward, one step back,” and “history is doomed to repeat itself.” In reality, history is a reflection of humanity, and humanity is chaotic and messy. Earlier this year I re-read the first chapter of The Feminine Mystique, Betty Friedan’s seminal work, which I had not picked up …

Matthew Littman Strikes Again…

Aug 15, 2009 | 11 Comments

The opinions expressed herein are those of the author and not necessarily those of The New Agenda.
Last night on The O’Reilly Factor, Matthew Littman struck again.
Readers may recall an article posted on The New Agenda about Littman’s previous appearance on July 24th on The O’Reilly Factor.
In that previous discussion between Littman, Reporter Amanda Carpenter and Gov Huckabee (filling in for O’Reilly), Littman stated:
I think Sarah Palin would be great on the Real Housewives of Wasilla…She comes across really as quite the character…but not a figure that …

A Warehouse of Sexism

Aug 15, 2009 | 4 Comments

The opinions expressed herein are those of the author and not necessarily those of The New Agenda.
When I first saw commercials for Warehouse 13, I was intrigued at the concept, a blend of science and fantasy in which a government-funded warehouse contains dangerous artifacts to keep them out of the hands of the people.
I watched the first episode, which seemed alright but unimpressive. However, as I continued to watch the series, it became more apparent that the show was tactless and disrespectful to its characters, especially fellow Warehouse agent …

Admirals Mentor Other Female Sailors

Aug 15, 2009 | 2 Comments

From the U.S. DOD press service.  The author’s opinions are his own and not necessarily those of The New Agenda.
Rear Admirals Howard and Pottenger.
Navy Rear Adm. Carol M. Pottenger and Navy Rear Adm. Michelle Howard have plenty on their respective plates – Pottenger as commander of Naval Expeditionary Combat Command and Howard as commander of Expeditionary Strike Group 2. But that doesn’t stop the two flag officers from taking on the additional role of mentoring female sailors.  Pottenger and Howard recently met with a group of fermale surface warfare officers in …

“In most cases, only boys can do extraordinary things.”

Aug 14, 2009 | No Comment

I read yesterday that 16 people have been named by President Barrack Obama to receive the nation’s highest civilian honor, a Presidential Medal of Freedom. The article states:
The recipients, said the White House, were chosen for their relentless breaking of barriers and for setting “a standard to which we all should strive.”
I commend the recipients for their outstanding work but I’ve got a little problem with this news.
6 out of 16 women – about 38%
Percent of women and girls in total population – greater than 50%.
Discrepancy.
Whenever I point out discrepancies …

Self Prometeuse

Aug 14, 2009 | 8 Comments

The New Agenda welcomes new contributor Kathryn Ciano, a law student in Virginia.  The views she expresses are her own, not necessarily those of The New Agenda.
I’ll risk being unpopular. Use the phrase “imposter syndrome” around any gaggle of professional women and watch them swoon, helpless. Women are not unaffected by the innumerate criticism that still greets those of us who choose to venture outside the home. Shockingly, more women than men still underestimate their performance on the job.
Three times more women than men underestimate their performances compared with their coworkers’ [reports …

Sheila Johnson: Renaissance Woman

Aug 13, 2009 | 3 Comments

The opinions expressed herein are those of the author and not necessarily those of The New Agenda.
Women everywhere have enormous potential to create change. With the right resources and opportunities, an impoverished woman has the power to improve her life, her family and her community.
Sheila Johnson is our nation’s renaissance woman. Born in 1949, she spent her childhood and early adulthood in the midst of the civil rights movement. She graduated from the University of Illinois and received a bachelor of the arts in music. She has …

Wise Latinas

Aug 13, 2009 | 6 Comments

Many words have been used by the media to describe Latinas.  Among other things, I have heard us called “saucy,” “hot,” and “spicy.”  It’s enough to make one feel like a burrito.
There is a stereotypical way that the Latina woman is portrayed in the mass media and most of these portrayals have to do with looks rather than our abilities and knowledge, which is why it is exciting to see Latinas claiming a phrase used by Justice Sonia Sotomayor that portrays us in a positive light.
“…Wise Latina…”
When else have Latinas …

Would You Like Sex with that Coffee?

Aug 13, 2009 | 13 Comments

This post consists of excerpts from a rant and a response to that rant, originally published on RantRave.com.  The authors’ opinions are their own, not necessarily those of The New Agenda.
By Howleanne
Here in the Northwest we’ve had a huge increase in these “bikini barista” coffee places. You know, the little drive-thru espresso stands where the girl making your coffee is wearing something other than clothes.
Okay, so I totally understand that sex sells, but this is getting to be a little bit ridiculous! I mean, if I want to stop somewhere for coffee …
